Osvaldo Nunes was raised in charities and never met his parents.
Used to live in the streets of Rio de Janeiro, worked as a whaler,
as shoeshine boy and street vendor and as street artist. He lived
a poor life until he started to visit samba schools and carnival
blocks. He then began his artistic career. His life ended tragically,
found a mysterious death, killed in his Rio apartment ..

Osvaldo Nunes groeide op in liefdadigheidsinstellingen en heeft
zijn ouders nooit gekend. Leefde lang op straat in Rio de Janeiro
en werkte als walvisvaarder, schoenpoetser en straatverkoper,
maar ook als straat artiest. Hij had een arm bestaan totdat hij
de sambascholen en carnaval ‘blocks’ begon te bezoeken en
zijn muzikale carrière van start ging. Zijn leven eindigde tragisch,
op mysterieuze wijze vermoord in z’n appartement in Rio ..

I think we already had some 20 of their albums. The latest post
was about 3,5 years ago in may 2018. Happily today we find another
of their records. It is from 1985 and on Afro-Rythmes from Paris.
Always thrilled to find more work by the grand Pépé Kallé, Dilu
Dilumona, Papy Tex and their group Empire Bakuba.
We had a couple of records on Syllart in the past as well.
I was sadly summoned to remove them at some point ..

Ik denk dat we al zo’n 20 platen van ze hebben gezien. De laatste
was alweer meer dan 3,5 jaar geleden, in mei 2018. Gelukkig dat we
vandaag weer eens een album met Empire Bakuba vinden. Hij komt uit
1985 en is op Afro Rythmes uit Parijs. Altijd lekker luisteren
naar de grote Pépé Kallé, Dilu Dilumona, Papy Tex en hun band.
We hadden er ook enkele op Syllart, helaas werd ik
gesommeerd deze te verwijderen op een zeker moment ..

Meet Lincoln Thompson.
“He began his recording career as a harmony singer along with
Cedric Myton of The Congos in 1967, in a band called The Tartans,
who then split up in 1969. In 1971 he was taken on by Coxsone Dodd
and recorded three songs with him at Studio One called “Daughters of
Zion”, “True Experience” and “Live Up to Your..” (read more ..) This is their
second album from 1979, very friendly reggae with this feel
good band. On Ballistic Records ..

In November 2011 we had volume 1, it came as Holiday
in Afrika, but was the same album. Then, in January 2014
we had volume 3. Today we find vol. 4, volume 2 is not
in my posession, but I did find it in my digital collection.
There is something strange, this series of four albums on
Pathé Marconi contains mostly Congolese songs, however,
volumes 2,3 and 4 also contain songs from other countries
that do not exactly fit in the series. Vol’s 2 and 4 have songs
by Fela Ransome Kuti, afrobeat which doesn’t really combine.
Volume 3 has a song by Moji & the Tropicals which also fall
out of tone in the series.

Volume 4 is my own vinyl rip and in Mp3 format. I must be
honest and tell you that I have found vol. 2 somewhere else,
I probably downloaded it myself, but I can’t seem to find out
where I did. I’m taking the liberty of re-posting it today, just
to complete the series. If it was you who first posted it and
want me to remove it, let me know. Volume 2 comes in flac
format and the Fela Ransome Kuti track is missing. The one
who first posted it clearly also didn’t like the combination.
Vol. 2 also contains a couple of other songs that don’t fit
too good, ‘G.G. Vicky – Agbé’, ‘Jam Kishy – Jean-Jean’,
‘Laba Sosseh – Seyni’ and ‘Sunny Adé – Ibe ise ba ri’..

In November 2011 hadden we volume 1, het verscheen toen
als ‘Holiday in Afrika’, maar was hetzelfde album. Later, in Januari
2014 hadden we volume 3. Vandaag hebben we volume 4. Vol. 2
heb ik niet op vinyl, maar vond ik wel in m’n digitale collectie. Wat
apart is, deze serie van vier platen op Pathé Marconi bevat voor-
namelijk Congolese songs, hoewel, vol’s 2,3 en 4 hebben ook wat
nummers die niet zo goed combineren uit andere landen. Vol’s 2
en 4 bevatten elk een track van Fela Ransome Kuti, afrobeat die
slecht op de rest aansluit. Vol. 3 heeft een track met Moji & the
Tropicals die ook uit de toon valt.

Volume 4 komt uit mijn eigen vinyl collectie en is in Mp3 formaat.
Ik vertel je eerlijk dat ik vol. 2 zelf ergens moet hebben gedownload,
ik weet echter niet meer waar. Ik heb de vrijheid genomen hem
vandaag te re-posten, ter completering van de serie. Als jij de origi-
nele uploader was en wilt dat ik hem verwijder, laat me dit dan even
weten. Deze vol. 2 komt in flac formaat en de Fela Kuti song is absent.
Degene die hem ooit postte vond hem kennelijk ook niet combineren.
Vol. 2 bevat nog enkele songs die minder passend zijn, ‘G.G. Vicky –
Agbé’, ‘Jam Kishy – Jean-Jean’, ‘Laba Sosseh – Seyni’ and
‘Sunny Adé – Ibe ise ba ri’..

great Anibal velasquez. This one is on the old yellow
label of Discos Fuentes. From 1971 and a treasure.
Despite a good cleaning, unfortunately the record
sounds quite dusty for a certain part,
especially at the end of side 1 ..

One of the world’s most famous and greatest bassplayers
has died. Robert Warren Dale, or just Robbie Shakepeare
left us after being ill sometime from kidney problems.
Robbie was one half of rhythm twins Sly & Robbie and
was only 68 years old. They played with half of the
Jamaican reggae artists and people like Mick Jagger,
Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Joe Cocker, Grace Jones
and many many others. When Black Uhuru and King
Sunny Adé came to Amsterdam, for a double gig in
the Jaap Eden Hal, in june 1984, I had the honour
of meeting Sly & Robbie. My good friend Gerard Kamer
who had a radio show called ‘Demo’ interviewed them
at the Sonesta Hotel afterwards. I still have the picture.
we were 26 years old and clearly had a few smokes. ;-)
I never forget the things Robbie said about Peter Tosh
that evening. Let’s say they weren’t the best of friends.
Listen to this 1981 Taxi album on which Sly & Robbie
do the main vocal parts, quite exceptional. I had to
place the skips manual so better listen to the whole
record in one session.

Één van ‘s werelds meest bekende en beste bassisten
heeft ons verlaten. Robert Warren Dale, of gewoon
Robbie Shakespeare overleed aan nier problemen
na daar al een tijdje mee te hebben gestoeid. Hij was
slechts 68 jaar oud. Robbie Shakespeare was de helft
van het beroemde ‘ritme duo’ Sly & Robbie. Zij speelden
met zo’n beetje de helft van alle Jamaicaanse artiesten
en met mensen als Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Jackson
Browne, Joe Cocker, Grace Jones en vele vele anderen.
Toen Black Uhuru en King Sunny Adé in de Jaap Eden
Hal in Amsterdam speelden in een dubbel concert in
juni 1984, heb ik de eer gehad hen te ontmoeten. Mijn
goede vriend Gerard Kamer, die toen zijn radio show
‘Demo’ had interviewde hen in het Sonesta Hotel
achteraf. Ik heb de foto van toen bewaard. We waren
26 jaar oud en hadden duidelijk wat gerookt. ;-) Ik zal
nooit vergeten wat Robbie toen vertelde over Peter
Tosh, laat ik zeggen dat ze geen beste vrienden waren.
Luister naar dit Taxi album uit 1981, Sly & Robbie doen
zelf, vrij uitzonderlijk, de meeste vokalen. Ik moest
de ‘skips’ handmatig plaatsen dus luister
liefst in één keer af.

Chief Koffi Sammy is back today with this 1982 Chartbuster.
At Discogs I did not find it. The album opens a little messy
and has a few tiny pops along the way. Still, it is a nice
contribution to the list of their records so far. Always
a pleasure listening to another Okukuseku ..

You may have noticed reggae is on repeat here at my turntable.
Old times relive when listening to all the hot reggae records bought
some 40 years ago when my friends and I were almost fulltime
skanking. Early eighties we were attending concerts of many many
Jamaicans visiting Amsterdam and other surrounding cities. I don’t
know how many times we frequented Paradiso, enjoying the bands
that came to play in my favorite music temple of those days. This
is the 1980 ´Repatriation Time, I´m in Love with a
Dreadlock´, with Ranking Superstar ..

Het was je wellicht al opgevallen dat reggae momenteel weer volop
op de draaitafel ligt hier. Oude tijden herleven als ik luister naar al de
toffe reggae platen die zo’n 40 jaar geleden gekocht werden. In die tijd
waren mijn vrienden en ik onophoudelijk van de partij bij de vele vele
concerten van de Jamaicaanse artiesten die Amsterdam en omliggende
steden bezochten. Ik weet niet hoe vaak we Paradiso frequenteerden
om de concerten te genieten die toentertijd mijn favoriete muziek
tempel aandeden. Dit is het in 1980 uitgebrachte ´Repatriation
Time, I´m in Love With a Dreadlock´, met

Looking at their list of records, Les Grands Colombias du Peuple
worked with many different front men. On this particular album
from 1982 it was Stanley Murphy. Very danceable music from
Côte d’Ivoire. In the second tune they make a trip to reggae,
I got criticized once for saying reggae (for me) comes from
Jamaica, but let me say it different. The first track is my
absolute favorite. Listen and make up your own mind ..

Als je naar hun lijst van releases kijkt op de pagina van Discogs,
wordt duidelijk dat Les Grands Colombias du Peuple met veel
verschillende ‘front men’ heeft gespeeld.(ik weet geen Neder-
landse equivalent) Op deze plaat uit 1982 is dat Stanley Murphy.
Zeer dansbaar album uit Côte d’Ivoire. In het tweede nummer
maakt de groep een uitstapje naar reggae. Ik kreeg al eens
kritiek door te zeggen dat reggae (voor mij) uit Jamaica komt.
Nu zeg ik het anders, Ik vind het eerste nummer veruit het best.
