An excellent idea Mouhamadou, Linton Kwesi Johnson
scored big time at the end of the seventies. After the great
‘Dread Beat an’ Blood’ under the name Poet and the Roots,
he continued under his own name. This was the follower up
which we played thousands of times in those years. Very
strong lyrics and Linton’s deep voice is still indestructible.
It was about time for me to post the other albums ..

As a bonus I have added his 1980, 12″ single ‘Di Black
Petty Booshwah’ ..

Een zeer goed idee van Mouhamadou om het missende
werk van Linton Kwesi Johnson eens te brengen. Na zijn
geweldige ‘Dread Beat an’ Blood’ als Poet and the Roots
eind jaren zeventig vervolgde hij onder zijn eigen naam
met dit album. We hebben het toentertijd helemaal
stuk gedraaid. Zeer sterke lyrics en de onverwoestbare
diepe stem van Linton staat nog steeds als een huis.
Het was hoog tijd zijn overige platen eens te posten ..

Het is alweer te lang geleden dat we wat puike samba hadden
hier op de Global Groove. Ik werd wakker met een nummer van
Martinho da Vila in m’n hoofd en wist meteen, ik moet een van
zijn albums posten vandaag. Hier is dus ‘Presente’ uit 1977. We
hadden er al een zwikkie maar er ontbreken er ook nog wel een
paar. Martinho is 82 en is een levende samba legende. Hij heeft
talloos veel platen gemaakt en nummers geschreven. Zijn werk
wordt geliefd door velen zowel binnen als buiten Brazilië ..

It has been too long we had us some nice samba here at the
Global Groove. I woke up today with a song of Martinho da Vila
on my mind and knew instantly, I’ve got to post one of his albums
today. Evidently here we have ‘Presente’ from 1977. We had quite
a bunch of his records but also still miss a few. Martinho is 82 years
of age today and is a living samba legend. He made numerous
records and wrote many great songs cherished by lots of
samba lovers in and out Brazil ..

On special request by Mouhamadou today some more
Exile One. From 1975 we’ve got this album which rocks
like crazy. From the first notes it grabs you and doesn’t
let go. Some of the songs are sung in English, one may
like this more than others, I’m afraid I belong to the
latter. Musically performed to perfection ..

Vandaag nog zo’n plaat met Exile One op verzoek van
Mouhamadou. Uit 1975 hebben we dit album waarop
de groep lekker los gaat. Vanaf de eerste seconde pakt
hij je en laat niet meer los. Sommige nummers zijn in
het Engels, de één vindt dit leuker dan de ander. Ik
ben bang dat ik tot de laatste groep behoor.

Het is alsof de duvel ermee speelt, telkens als er zo’n album
opduikt waar de magie vanaf komt blijkt deze uit 1973 te komen.
Het kan aan mij liggen hoor. Hoe dan ook, deze fijne elpee dook
op uit mijn platenkast en pakte me bij verrassing. Toen ik op Youtube
ook nog eens een optreden van ze vond met Robert Martino was het
verhaal rond. Bijzonder lekkere muziek uit Haïti, luister wederom
met veel plezier naar Les Difficiles de Pétion Ville ..

It must be a conspiracy I tell you, every time we find an album
magic like this it is from 1973. It can be me but this keeps happening.
One way or the other, this fine record came from the shelf and took
me by surprise. When I found a gig from the old guys with Robert
Martino the pieces of the puzzzle fel together. Wonderful music
from Haïti, listen with peasure once more. These are
les Difficiles de Pétion Ville ..

Another 1983 delicious slice is this one by Dalek I Love You.
We enjoyed listening to it a whole lot. “Look Good, Get Smart,
Smell Nice, Work Hard, Ambition”. Wonderful lyrics, funky sound,
splendid art work “Have You Got It?” This was and still is one of my
favourite new wave albums. If you never heard it, do not hesitate,
get it and spread it as usual straight away. Again some skips may
be slightly out of place, better listen in one take ..

Een andere heerlijke 1983 schijf vinyl is deze met Dalek I Love You.
We hebben er altijd met enorm veel plezier naar geluisterd. “Look
Good, Get Smart, Smell Nice, Work Hard, Ambition”. Geweldige
teksten, funky sound, prachtig art work. “Have You Got It?” Dit
was en is nog steeds één van m’n lievelings new wave platen.
Als je ‘m nooit hebt gehoord, twijfel dan niet. Down, deel
en luister onmiddelijk zoals altijd. Wederom kunnen
enkele skips wat fout zitten, luister het best achter
elkaar door dus ..

Identical twin brothers Jay (John) and Michael Aston are better
known as ‘Gene Loves Jezebel’. They had a couple of successes
during the 1980’s. I think their best album was their first one
called ‘Promise’ from 1983. My friends and me played it over
and over, crazy about their emotional way of singing .
The songs are melt together and placing the exact skips
may have worked poorly here and there. Better listen
to it as a whole .. Love the artwork on this one ..

De één eiige tweelingbroers Jay (John) en Michael Aston zijn
beter bekend als ‘Gene Loves Jezebel’. Ze hadden diverse successen
tijdens de jaren tachtig. Ik vind hun eerste album, genaamd ‘Promise’
uit 1983, ook direct hun beste. Mijn vrienden en ik draaiden hem grijs,
gek op hun emotionele manier van zingen. De nummers zijn op kant
één aan elkaar gemonteerd en de skips kunnen her en der wat
rommelig zijn. Beter om in één take af te luisteren dus.

The 1980’s were an interesting decade musicwise. We listened to
reggae, african and ofcourse a lot of new wave. Great Brittain was
the cradle of a whole lot of interesting bands. I’m gonna post some
this week, starting with this artist. This is the second album from
1981 by splendid artist .. ;

Francis John Tovey(8 September 1956 – 3 April 2002), known also
by his stage name Fad Gadget, was a British avant-garde electronic
musician and vocalist. He was a proponent of both new wave and
early industrial music, fusing together a unique blend of pop structured
songs mixed with mechanised experimentation.As Fad Gadget, his
music was characterised by the use of synthesizers in conjunction
with sounds of found objects, including drills and electric razors. His
bleak, sarcastic and darkly humorous lyrics were filled with biting
social commentary toward subjects such as machinery, industrialisation,
consumerism, human sexuality, mass media, religion, domestic violence

From 1978 we’ve got this album with the great Chief Kofi Sammy
and his Okukuseku Band of Ghana. The sleeve of the record is quite
worn out, the vinyl itself however is still in good shape. I have added
the pictures taken from Discogs which are in much better condition.

Chief Kofi Sammy is hier andermaal met dit heelijke album uit 1978.
De hoes is bijna verdwenen maar het vinyl zelf verkeert nog in prima
staat. Ik heb de foto’s van Discogs bijgevoegd, die zijn een stukje beter.

An album without any information on Rogers All Stars from
Onitsha, Nigeria. I found it with the wrong sleeve and had to
copy this one from Youtube for it was the only one I could find.
It concerns the Original Brothers Band led by Sir Major with
Iheoma Ogo Egbulum from 1980. The highlife makes me think
of that from the Oriental Brothers, I guess it is from the same
region. I have no sleeve and no info, if one of you does, please
be so good to share it with the rest of us. For now just
listen to the Original Brothers Band ..
