Ochieng’ Nelly was born Nelson Ochieng Orwa in 1943 in South Nyanza.
He began playing the guitar in his teenage years after being taught
and inspired by the pioneering Congolese Musician Adolf Banyore.
Ochieng’ Nelly got his first guitar in 1961. He travelled widely through
Uganda, Congo and other African countries. He was widely exposed to
Congolese guitar playing styles. He developed his own unique playing
style that was later a big influence to the sound of The Ogara Boys Band,
and Benga music in general.
Nelly worked with his Congolese mentor for a while before joining The
Ogara Boys Band in 1962. The Ogara Boys Band consisting of founding
member John Ogara Odondi and Aketch Oyosi was formed in 1960. Together
the trio started and developed a unique sound that got the name Benga,
in 1963. In 1966, Nelly left Ogara Boys Band to pursue his career
elsewhere. He briefly collaborated with another Benga legend, George
Ramogi. Ochieng’ Nelly has produced several songs such as: Monica Abio,
Ombua Akelo, Celestine Juma, Samuel Aketch among others. His story is
featured extensively in the Ketebul Music produced documentary: Retracing
The Benga Rhythm Through Ochieng’ Nelly’s music, the legend of yester
years Benga , still lives on.

Here in the Netherlands we enjoy, or suffer, the first official
heat wave in 2022 with temperatures over 30º. Nice for some
and a pain in the *ss for others. I couldn’t resist posting this
album with German bass player Holger Schüring, better known
as Holger Czukay. Opening track ‘Let’s Get Cool in the Pool’ is
just the song for today. Holger was an early pioneer, forging
his avant-garde pop music. He used shortwave radio sounds
and was one of the first sampling snippets from magnetic tapes.
Listen to his mind blowing 1979 album ‘Movies’ ..Deze dagen genieten we, of lijden onder, de eerste officiele
Opener ‘Let’s get Cool in the Pool’ is ideaal voor het moment.
02 – Oh lord give us more money
03 – Persian love

Our blogfriend Antonio asked me specifically for this album with
Chico Cervantes. Together with the two we had last week we

other styles of music than the latter two. We find yanga,
porro, gua gua, mercy, ritmo oriza, paseo salsa,
soncito and guaracha.
vorige paar. We vinden yanga, porro, gua gua, mercy,
ritmo oriza, paseo salsa, soncito en guaracha.

Let’s listen to something different today. One of the leading
figures in the New orleans soul field was without doubt the
late and great Allen Toussaint. As musician, songwriter,
arranger and record producer he made a permanent
name. Read his Wiki-page and learn. By the way,
don’t you just love that cover ?Laten we vandaag eens luisteren naar iets heel anders.
was zonder twijfel Allen Toussaint.

It is a challenge, finding rare African records. Every once in
a while we’ve got record fairs somewhere in the Netherlands.
Since vinyl is gaining in popularity the last years it doesn’t get
easier. Lots of fairs and lesser quality in supply is what we see.
Fortunately on a few of the better fairs I get to meet with some
guys from France who bring awesome and hard to find stuff.
Take a look at this Yoruba juju album with Kayode Fashola
& his Music Makers. It is their first appearance here at the
Global Groove. Quite different style
than what we’ve heard so far ..Om zeldzame Afikaanse platen te vinden is een steeds grotere
uitdaging. We zien alsmaar meer platenmarkten en beurzen
de laatste jaren, vinyl is weer populair geworden. Helaas komt

Yesterday’s post with Chico Cervantes had quite some background
noise. That’s why you get a better sounding album with him today.
This one does not only have better sound, it contains songs in a
different style. Instead of vallenato we hear several varieties
of so called tropical de Colombia like porro, guaracha and
such.
08 – Despierta
09 – Nací en la playa
10 – El mata ratónPosted by Moosat 8:13 AMCategories
