They appear first time at the Groove, we never had any of their
work so far. The white Eagles from Nigeria, fortunately they
sound as black as we hoped for. It’s been some time we had
Nigerian highlife but this one can make up for the hiatus.
A twelve man band with subtle sound, hypnotising

We had a couple of his records, Dan Amakye Dede
and his Apllo International Band of Ghana. He started
as composer and treble singer with the Kumapim Royals.
In 1980 he began forming his own group. The first record
they made was “To be a man na wah !”, I have it waiting
for another occasion, it is scratched a little. Today we’ve
got their second album which was a huge succes in 1984.

The album I intended to post last sunday was this one Kwabena.
When going through them I picked the one with more or less
similar front sleeve. Anyway, here is another of their lp’s from
the same year 1978. It is a little bit noisy but I think it’s one
of their better records, Yellow Sisi and Okponku Special
are straight hits and at least worth a couple of
spins, enjoy doing so..

A very popular highlife group in our little music community
is without doubt this one. Sammy Kofi and his Okukuseku
International Band of Ghana worked from Lagos Nigeria.
It’s on Muomaife Records and from 1978. Recorded in a
christian radio studio I do not wish to know what the
lyrics mean. I do know I like it very much musically.
Great rhythms, Sammy Kofi’s wonderful voice,
more sweet highlife, don’t miss..

Hello groovers, yesterday I received some really nice
feedback from one of our visitors. Obiora Obikwelu from
Minnesota USA is from Nigerian descent and grew up with
the Nigerian Highlife of Oliver de Coque, Oriental Brothers
and such. He started his own little group inspired by the
music of his ancestors and sent us some copies of their
songs to share with you. Let’s see what happens.

To begin with, some more studying material from Nigeria.
Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe is back with an album I did
not post yet. Other blogs have brought it but to complete
our Osadebe discography ( some fine day ) I didn’t want
to keep it from you and today is a good day to do so.
It’s frontsleeve is damaged quite bad but I did not find
a solid replacement. It is what it is. The rhythms
however are just breathtakingly wonderful..

Thank you Obi for your mail and it’s fantastic to hear what
came out of your Nigerian hat. I want to ask you visitors to
check youtube for their other songs, they have a few more
there to listen to. Listen to Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe
and lend an ear to the Okwute Melody Makers of Africa
as well, hope you like’m..

For the lovers of Ghanaian highlife we have an album
by Dan Amakye Dede and his Apollo International Band
of Ghana. It was recorded in Nigeria in 1984 and sounds
a little noisy. It is always difficult, should I keep this album
from posting because it is crackly or continue without holding
back ? I guess I’d rather choose the second option.
Guitar-highlife from Ghana but made in Nigeria is one
of the most popular styles at our page, so if you forget the
noise I’m sure this one will also find a happy listening ear..

As we say in the Netherlands, promise causes guilt. It means
I am in debt to one of our visitors who I promised to post this
record. I kept it on the shelf because it contains jesus titles.
I am a anti religious person, I take distance from any religious
message and support the music as it is, very nice juju. I truly
love the sound but hate the fact that juju artists act like
priests sometimes. So Tony, enjoy this album, the music

Orchestre les Djo-Djo led by Lusala Mavungu.
Mavungu is Mavos Meme Mavungu who we know of Orchestre
Micky-Micky for instance. The label speaks of L. Magungu.
Is L. Magungu in fact Lusala Mavungu ? If anyone can
clear up this matter, please do not hesitate to leave
us a message. The lp is in lingala and label states
‘sukus’, certainly no hard soukous but very nice it is.
Get it and spread it like always..cheers..

When you don’t look good, at first it seems we have
another album by the famous Oriental Brothers. But
no, it isn’t. These are the Continental Brothers from
Owerri, also Nigerian, from the same area if I’m not
mistaking, comparable style but different guys. I did
not find any useful information on this band, they are
as it’s called ungooglable, not one searching result.

It is a coincidence, I received a request from Tony,
asking for King Sunny Ade because today is his 67th
birthday. I checked the KSA lp’s I haven’t posted yet
but the only three left unposted are not my favourites.
When an lp has god and jesus titles I get irritated and
am unable to post. It just so happens I have this album
by Thony Adex with or about King Sunny Ade. You can
see his picture on the frontsleeve and his name is in
the titles as well. I have no idea about the link, if King
Sunny is performing here or if it’s all about him, if any
one can tell us what the link is, would be very much
appreciated. So Tony, an album by Thony Adex,
hope you enjoy it anyway..
