Hello and good morning on this Easterday. I think it’s for the first
time we are having us a white Easter. Even with Chrsitmas we
had better weather, it’s cold and snowing on this 31st of march.
Spring just doesn’t realise we’re already entering april tomorrow.

Winter or spring, we play tropical music all year round so that
makes no difference. Today I’ll spoil you with some ‘Tropical de
Colombia’. From 1975 on Discos Fuentes de Medellin Colombia
we’ve got this wonderful album by Los Corraleros de Majagual.
This supergroup had relations with the most fantastic artists.
On this album alone we find Lisandro Meza, Eliseo Herrera,
Julio Erazo and Calixto Ochoa to name just a few. But they
also hosted Alfredo Gutierrez, Lucho Argain and Nacho
Paredes among many others. Great vocalists, hot
rhythmsection and horns, better don’t miss..

On ‘Sacodis’ we have this 1980 album. Aboudou Lassissi
presents Charanga para todos, charanga for everybody.
On this volume 1 we hear ‘Monguito’ as lead vocalist,
backed by Adalberto Santiago, José Alberto and Ronnie
Baro. On piano – Alfredito Valdez, bass – Joe Santiago,
trumpet – Hector Zarzuela, sax – Mario Ravira, trombone –
Esteve Torrez, drum – Manny Ramos, conga bongo –
Marcelino Valdez and bass guitar – Edy Guagua.
Strange thing is that album sleeve doesn’t say anything
about lead vocals. I found a site on the web that claims
it is just Monguito. However if I am not so sure, don’t we
hear Laba Sosseh in track 3, what do you think ?

If you’re into Cuban music and also into African, this is an
item not to miss. We can’t remember him enough, Franco and his
O.K. Jazz. This LP from the 60’s contains Cha cha cha, Rumba,
Pachanga and Charanga, give it a go.

Puerto Rican singer and percussionist Tito Rodriguez moved to New
York in the 30’s. He later became one of the biggest bandleaders
who worked all the big Latin clubs like the famous Palladium.

It was in 1997, when ‘Buena Vista Social Club’ launched their
historic first cd with Ry Cooder, that I learned about Pio Leiva.
He was one of the singers, that worked with Compay Segundo
since the 50’s. Leiva was one of the main performers of the
Montuno genre, they called him ‘el Montunero de Cuba’.
He wrote the number ‘Francisco Guayabal’ that became a hit
via Beny Moré and played with Bebo Valdes and Noro Moralez.
I was one of the lucky visitors of the Amsterdam Carré Theater
when Wim Wenders made his movie of the Buena Vista Social Club,
an unforgettable evening.
This is an album on his own name and it’s a great one.

Until now we saw two great latinlabels at Global Groove.
the Colombian label, “discos Fuentes’ and New York label ‘SAR’.
It’s about time to post some latin of the great ‘Fania’, a New
York label that started early 70’s, correct me if I’m wrong.
One of Fania’s biggest stars through the years is without any
doubt, ‘Johnny Pacheco’. I quote the backcover of this LP;
Sound, rhythm, and change…..three words that seem to go
well with Johnny Pacheco. The sound was Charanga, the
rhythm was Pachanga,and the change was welcomed by
dancers around the world; but this is a restless world of
innovations, and the most restless of all is JOHNNY !
Change the sound, change the rhythm, charge the air with
musical energy……the flute become drums, the violins
become trumpets, blend in voices, and the metamorphosis
