De Ghanese highlife liefhebber is de laatste tijd wel enigszins
verwaarloosd. Ik ga dat eens dubbel en dwars goedmaken deze
week. Vandaag hebben we een plaatje van twee idolen op één lp.
Kyerematen Atwede en Chief Kofi Sammy zagen we nog niet in een
dergelijk project. Kyerematen Stars op kant 1 en Okukuseku op
kant 2. Mooie produktie die je niet wil missen. De meesten van
u weten dat ik niet op halleluya zit te wachten, in dit geval
echter is het muzikaal zo mooi dat ik een uitzondering maak..

The Ghanese highlife lovers have been somewhat neclected
lately and it is time for me to make up for it. This week we’re
gonna do a little more. Today we have this special record with
two idols on one album. Kyerematen Atwede and Chief Kofi
Sammy did not appear in such a project yet. Kyerematen Stars
on side 1 and Okukuseku on side 2. Nice production you would
not like to miss. Most of you know I am not so fond of halleluya,
in this case however I’m making an exception because it is
really wonderful musically, get it and spread it..

As you can see, Sir Waziri Oshomah is ready and dressed
for another day at the office. His co-workers/family members
are already waiting with the proper gear to make it a succes.
It seems they produce T.S. which stands
for Traditional Sound, nice..

Zoals je kunt zien is Sir Waziri Oshomah weer helemaal
klaar voor een dag op kantoor. Zijn personeel/familie
staat hem reeds op te wachten met de materialen. Ze
produceren er T.S. eenwelk Traditional
Sound betekent, fijn hoor..

Het is heel lang niet zo warm geweest in Nederland als de afgelopen tijd.
Het is gortdroog en voorlopig wordt er geen regen verwacht. Tropische
taferelen die doen denken aan landen als Nigeria bijvoorbeeld. Het gras
is bij ons al net zo geel als op de hoes van deze plaat. Franco Lee Ezute
en zijn Harmony Kings brengen hier een perfecte sound om een regen-
dans op te doen. Ik heb het al geprobeerd maar alleen lukt me dat niet.
Als iedereen meedoet kunnen we er misschien wat druppels uitpersen..

It hasn’t been hot like lately in the Netherlands for a long long time.
The country suffers from severe drought and no rain is to be expected
for some time. Tropical conditions that make us think of lands as Nigeria
for instance. The grass here is as yellow as on the cover of this record.
Franco Lee Ezute and his Harmony Kings bring a sound very suitable for
a solid raindance. I have tried but will never succeed on my own. If
everybody helps we might be able to squeeze out a few drops..

We hebben nu vier plaatjes van Sir Waziri Oshomah gezien en
er wacht nog een tiental om gepost te worden. Afenmai is een
vorm van Nigeriaanse highlife die door Sir Waziri is gïnitialiseerd.
De exacte kenmerken kan ik je niet vertellen maar dat het smaakt
is een feit. Smul vandaag eens van deze kraker. Voor meer informatie

We had us four of the records of Sir Waziri Oshomah so far and another
ten are waiting to be posted. Afenmai is a form of Nigerian highlife which
Sir Waziri initiated. I can’t tell you the exact characteristics but it tasts
wonderful, that’s a fact. Enjoy this cracker today and if you want more

Uit 1978 en op Ijebor hebben we deze plaat vandaag. Etsakor
Sound Voices uit Nigeria. Hij kraakt behoorlijk maar ik wilde
hem toch brengen. Ik kan er weinig zinnigs over zeggen maar
telkens als ik er naar luister intrigeert hij me. De laidback
sound is ondanks de mindere geluidskwaliteit heel fijn.
Van de laatste beurs in Utrecht bracht ik een stapel
duistere Nigeriaanse platen mee naar huis waarvan
dit er eentje is, meer obscuur materiaal volgt..

From 1978 and on Ijebor Records we’ve got this record today.
Etsakor Sound Voices from Nigeria. It has a considerable
amount of background noise but I wanted to bring it anyway.
There is not much I can say about it but everytime I listen to
it I get intrigued. The laidback sound is very nice despite
the crackle and hiss. Brought home a pile of mysterious
Nigerian records from the last fair in Utrecht of which
this is one. More obscure material to follow..

Zit wel lekker in Afrikaanse sferen de laatste tijd hè..
Geen idee hoe het komt, de ene keer blijf je hangen
in Colombia en dan weer in Jamaica, dit keer op het
Afrikaanse continent. Nigeria is een land waar muzikaal
veel te halen valt. De afrobeat is niet zo aan mij besteed
maar de highlife, juju en ook wel de fuji en apala zijn erg
boeiend. Vandaag een tamelijk onbekend artiest waar
ik je dan ook niets over vertellen kan, luisteren maar..

Lately quite a lot of African here at the GG, Don’t know
why but I kind a got stuck on the continent. We knew
periods of Jamaican, Colombian, West Indian, this time
African atmospheres have me captured for a while. Nigeria
is a country with a wealth of styles. Afrobeat is not so much
my cup of tea but highlife, juju and also fuji and apala are
more fascinating. Today an album by Aloy Anyanwu about
whom I can’t tell you anything useful, just listen..

Aces brengen de Efik Gold serie die uit wel acht volumes bestaat.
Dit is de tweede in de reeks. Heerlijk relaxte stijl highlife..

We had us some 25 of them records by Nana Ampadu’s African Brothers.
It seems there is no end to the pile of albums they have produced. All the
better bacause we can never get enough of the fine highlife they made.

For a few years now, I meet with a French record dealer at the
Utrecht fair. He brings loads of Nigerian lp’s every time. Prices
are always fair. Quality however is a different matter. Some are
clean but many carry the marks of time like mostly with Nigerian
records. One way or the other, the records he brings are obscure
and sometimes quite rare. Listen to this one with King Love A.U.
and the Ubulu International Band of Africa..

Reeds enkele jaren ontmoet ik op de tweejaarlijkse Utrechtse
platenbeurs een Franse dealer die stapels elpees uit Nigeria met
zich meebrengt. De prijzen zijn altijd eerlijk. De kwaliteit van de platen
echter is een ander verhaal. Soms zijn ze clean, soms ook erg stoffig
en krakerig zoals vaak met Nigeriaanse platen het geval is. Hoe dan
ook, meestal is er erg veel obscuur spul bij en soms ook zeer
zeldzaam. Luister naar deze met King Love A.U. en de Ubulu
International Band of Africa..
