This is part one of a three record series of Highlife
from the old days. It appeared in the seventies but
contains songs from the fifties. Bands like the Stargazers
or Onyina”s Guitar Band aswell as E.T. Mensah’s Tempos
were very popular in Ghana in them days. My favourite
is track #6, Masan Makwo, don’t understand a word they
sing but just love that sound, hope you do too.tracks;

It’s incredibly strong, the power of music, once you’ve
put up this album, there ain’t no stoppin’ anymore.
You’ll start listening quietly and then..when the rhythm
takes of, …you’re gone…move it like you’ve never done before.

Hello Groovers,
We’ve got some Nigerian music for your saturday.
In these parts of the globe winter took a headstart .
Holland is completely white, covered with snow and it’s still
falling down in large amounts. Absolutely beautiful if you don’t
need to ride through it on your bicycle or have to camp out,
like in some other parts of the same world. All I can do to
make you feel warm is provide you with tropical sound.

This LP by Nigerian Highlifers ‘Ikenga, Super Stars of Africa’
is on ‘african’. On the front it shows us also the logo of ‘Afrodisia’.
Same time backsleeve is typical ‘RAS’. Distributed by ‘Sonodisc’
and licenced by ‘Decca West Africa’, Lagos Nigeria. All the important
clubs seem involved in this project. Combining forces had a great effect,
the album sounds perfect. I can already hear it blast from the
speakers of some pumping ‘picó’ in Barranquilla,
how ’bout you Fabian ?tracks;

I had this post ready for placing last night but I could not
get into Mediafire to uplaod it. There might have been some
maintenance going on. Anyway, today I did get through. This
Ghanaian highlife band was lead by Kwasi Boateng who also
took care of arrangements. Songs were written by Kyei Mensah,
also leadsinger and accompanied by K.Addai and Afriyie.
Ghanaian highlife at it’s best, don’t miss.tracks;

One of Nigeria’s greatest performers of highlife was most
certainly ‘Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe and his Nigerian
Sound Makers International’, quite a mouthful. He made over
30 albums of which this is the 5th at the Global Groove.
Check our search option for a quick launch of the others.
Just two 16 minute tracks but what great rhythms.
The B-side of the album wasn’t centered right so by
the end of the track it gets a bit false unfortunately.
Hope you enjoy it anyway.tracks;

On Nigeria’s Afrodisia label we find this album from 1989.
King Ubulu’s International Band of Africa’s sparkling rhythms
grab you straight away and it’s hard not to get up from your
chair and dance across the room. So don’t hesitate.tracks;

Certainly I’m not the first blogger to post this here LP.
Every self respecting African music collector should have this
in their archive and I’m sure most of you already do. It’s a classic
and therefore it is justified to appear oncemore I guess. If you didn’t
have it yet, take your chance today.
With Eric Agyeman, Thomas Frimpong,
sublime highlife from Ghana.

Hello there, today I felt like listening to some Nigerian highlife.
It was about time we had us some of this sweet party music.
Although called Super 5, they appear with eight on the front
and back-sleeve. What splendid sound these guys bring here,
rolling rhythms, strings that drive you crazy and great vocal
harmony, at times just a tiny bit false but that is all part
of the charme of this group. We had an album by them on the
2nd of march this year, use the page search for fast result.
I congratulate you with your new done purchase, put on
track #2, furniture aside, volume up and let go…P.S. I took the Liberty to call this LP after it’s first song,
a thing seen often when the album has no name.tracks;
