Some more requests for juju music from Michael, this is the first
of his wishes of which I just happen to have a few. Chief Commander
Ebenezer Obey made a load of records. We had a bunch already and
still many to follow. ‘My Vision’ is from 1985 and appears on the Obey
label. If you take a look at the backsleeve, just click on it, see how many
musicians helped making this record. 20 men bands are common in juju.

Ik kreeg nog wat verzoekjes voor meer juju van Michael, dit is de eerste
van enkele plaatjes die ik toevallig heb. Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey
heeft een enorme stapel platen gemaakt. We hadden er al vele en er volgt
ook nog een aantal. ‘My Vision’ is uit 1985 en op het Obey label. Als je clickt
op de backsleeve zie je hoeveel muzikanten meewerkten deze plaat te ma-

Juju Guitarist’. Today we find Volume No. 1 which is a tribute
to Sunny Adé. We also had this 1974 album and this 1978 one.

body agrees about, Dele Abiodun’s guitar work is astonishing.

Zoals veel artiesten is Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey
verkikkerd op zijn land van herkomst. We hoorden al eerder
bijvoorbeeld Ramito die zweert bij zijn Puerto Rico, ook Irma
Vila y su Mariachi met het nummer ‘Como México no hay dos’.
Vandaag zingt Ebenezer Obey ‘No place be like my country
Nigeria’. Heel eerlijk denk ik dat we er allemaal wel een
beetje aan mee doen. Hoe dan ook, deze week staat
volledig in het teken van de Nigeriaanse muziek ..

Like many other artists, Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey
just loves his country of origin. On earlier occasions we have
heard for instance Ramito, he is crazy about his Puerto Rico.
Also Irma Vila with the song ‘Como México no hay dos’. Today
Ebenezer Obey sings ‘No place be like my country Nigeria’. To
be honest I think we all join in that sentiment. One way or the

De hoes van de plaat zegt 1980 en het label zegt dat hij uit 1981
komt. We zien dit vaker. Ik ga altijd maar uit van het vroegste, dat
lijkt me het meest logisch. Hoe dan ook, een elpee met twaalf juju
nummers waarvan er weer eens eentje bijzit waarop I.K. Dairo de
accordeon speelt,(#10) dat hoor ik zo graag. I.K. Dairo mocht op een
mooie dag optreden voor de Engelse koningin Elizabeth II. Ze vond
het zo mooi dat hij werd onderscheiden met de titel MBE, Member
of the Brittish Empire. De hoogste eer ooit aan een Afrikaanse
muzikant door een Engelse koningin gegeven..

The sleeve of the album speaks of 1980, the label of 1981. We see
this more often. I always settle for the earliest year, seems to be the
most logic thing to do. One way or the other, an album with twelve juju
songs, one on which I.K. Dairo plays the accordion,(#10) just love to hear that.
I.K. Dairo once had the opportunity to play for the British queen Elizabeth II
when she visited Nigeria. She liked it so much that she honoured him with
the title MBE, member of the British empire. The highest honour ever
given to an African musician by a British queen..

another one of his releases in my collection. It concerns the Juju Highlife
of Orlando Owoh. It was waiting for this moment to happen and I’m glad

Enorm veel dank Dennis. Toen ik het artikel las wat je ons gisteren aanreikte
kwam ik tot de ontdekking dat ik nog zo’n fijne release van het Original Music
label van John Storm Roberts in huis heb. Het betreft deze Juju Highlife plaat

It is about two and a half years ago we discovered Uncle
Toye Ajagun. Around then I posted the 1978 album ‘Gbedu
Beats’ by his hand. I’m very happy to be able to bring his 1975
released ‘The Sound of Olumo Rock, vol.1’ today. Uncle Toye is a
welcome addition to the list of known juju artists.

Ajagun. Het album ‘Gbedu Beats’ uit 1978 heb ik toen met
enthousiasme geplaatst. Met gepaste blijdschap breng ik
vandaag dit plaatje uit 1975, ‘The Sound of Olumo Rock, vol.1′.
Uncle Toye is een welkome aanvulling op het rijtje reeds bekendere

On multiple request this is a re-post of King Sunny Adé’s African
version of the album ‘Ajoo’. It was already posted in may 2008.
In those days, when I just started blogging, I made a mistake cutting
up side one in three seperate tracks while it is on the record as one
big song. Today I ripped it again as one and hope you like it more.
You can now replace the old file for this better one.

It must have been in 1981 or 1982, King Sunny played in the Amsterdam
Jaap Eden Hall, followed by Black Uhuru. Two great bands on one evening.
It was an incredible experience I shall never forget. King sunny appeared with
a stage so full of coloured artists, it must have been 20 people or more. Once
they started playing the crowd came in a trance and remained there till the very
end. Listen to Ajoo once again, get it and spread it as usual..

Op herhaaldelijk verzoek is dit een herplaatsing van King Sunny Adé’s
Afrikaanse versie van het album ‘Ajoo’. Het werd eerstelijk geplaatst in
mei 2008. In die dagen, ik was nog maar net begonnen met bloggen, heb
ik de fout gemaakt kant één op te splitsen in drie aparte tracks terwijl ze als
één song op de plaat staan. Vandaag heb ik hem in z’n geheel geript en hoop
dat ie zo een stuk beter bevalt. Vervang de oude file voor de nieuwe.

Het moet in 1981 of 1982 zijn geweest dat King Sunny in de Jaap Eden Hal te
Amsterdam optrad met daarna Black Uhuru. Twee pracht bands op een avond.
Ik zal nooit vergeten hoe KSA met een man of 20 of zelfs meer het volledige
podium vol zette. Vanaf de eerste noten raakte het publiek in een diepe
trance die duurde tot het eind van hun optreden. Waanzinnig goed. Luister
nog eens naar Ajoo, nu beter en stel je die
zaal met uitzinnige fans eens voor..
