It is just because of that album I found out tracks two and three
have been switched on label and backsleeve of the record we
have today. The second song is Ursulla with the Black Star
Music Club which we know from the earlier post. I can only
hope that the other songs are the ones given on sleeve and
label and in that correct order. Taarab or ‘Tarabu’ is a type of
music, almost Arabic or Indian. To get a better idea, you should

Tot nu toe hadden we slechts één plaat met dit soort muziek.
Je kunt hem hier vinden.
Doordat we dit album al kennen ontdekte ik dat titels twee en drie
verwisseld zijn op hoes en label van het album dat we vandaag
hebben. Het tweede nummer is Ursulla en de Black Star Music
Club welke we van de vorige posting kennen. Ik kan slechts hopen
dat de rest van de nummers de juiste zijn en in de juiste volgorde
staan. Taarab of ‘Tarabu’ is een oost Afrikaanse muziekstijl die
veel doet denken aan Arabische of Indiaase muziekstijlen. Om

It is hard to find information about Orchestre Malekesa du Zaïre.
One of those Congolese bands operating from Kenya, led by Frantal
Tabu. One way or the other, this is a very enjoyable record.
( track #2 got stuck right at the beginning so I fade started it
just behind it, we miss the first minute and
another bad moment at 5.40..shame..)

Het is tamelijk lastig enige informatie te vinden over Orchestre
Malekesa du Zaïre. Het is een van die Congolese bands die van uit
Kenya opereerde in de jaren zeventig. Hoe dan ook, dit is een
aangenaam plaatje, luister zelf..
( nummer twee bleef direct aan het begin al hangen dus ik heb
een fade start gemaakt voorbij dit punt. We missen een
minuutje, en een slecht moment rond 5.40..jammer..)

if you turn on your TV and something passes by about Kenya,
it is mostly nature or culture related. Animals Play the most
important role in general. lions, giraffes, elephants, hyenas,
wildebeests, antilopes and such, at its most we see the Masai
people passing by. Concerning the wonderful music the country
produced we never hear a word. Reason enough to give it some
more attention. No huge stories here but mainly the music
itself. Let your ears tell you the story, for example Daniel Owino
Misiani’s and his DO-7 Shirati Jazz Band’s. The tracks are all
melted together and I didn’t have the courage to separate them.
You’ll have to listen to them as two long tracks,
side 1 and side 2.

Als je de TV aanzet en er is iets over Kenya is het meestal
een natuur of cultuur aangelegenheid die langskomt. Dieren
spelen daarin over het algemeen de hoofdrol. Leeuwen,
giraffen, olifanten, hyena’s, Gnoe’s, Antilopen en dergelijke,
hooguit zien we eens iets over de Masai passeren. Over de
prachtige muziek die het land heeft voortgebracht horen we
maar bitter weinig. Reden te meer om hier wat aandacht aan
te besteden. Geen diepgravende beschouwingen maar de
muziek zelf. Laat je oren je het verhaal vertellen. Bijvoorbeeld
dat van Daniel Owino Misiani en de DO-7 Shirati Jazz Band.
De nummers zitten zo strak op elkaar gemonteerd dat ik het
niet aandurfte ze te scheiden. Je zult de plaat in twee lange
aaneengesloten delen moeten beluisteren. Kant 1 en kant 2.

Africa as continent brought forth many fabulous styles of
music and benga from Kenya is one that keeps fascinating.
Many of our visitors here at the GG agree with me and so
making the next singles comp was a logic step. Fortunately
we keep finding them at a regular basis, enjoy listening..

Van alle stijlen muziek die Afrika als continent rijk is, is benga
uit Kenya er één die wel erg tot de verbeelding spreekt. Elke
keer als ik er naar luister raak ik weer diep onder de indruk.
Ook veel van onze bezoekers hier bij de GG lopen er warm
voor. Gelukkig duiken er nog met regelmaat singletjes op
dus deze comp was er een die voor de hand lag, enjoy..

Uit 1977 en tamelijk zeldzaam is deze lekkere benga schijf
van de Winam Jazz Band uit Kenya. Hij komt op Jicco
records, luister zelf en zie wat je ervan vindt..

Als men het in Kenya en Tanzania over gouden oudjes heeft
spreekt men respectievelijk van Zilizopendwa en Zilipendwa.
De plaat die we hier vandaag brengen komt dus uit Kenya
getuige de titel. Het is een verzameling songs gebracht door
verschillende artiesten. Ik raakte geïnspireerd toen ik gisteren
de cd ‘Urgent Jumping!’ kocht, een dubbel cd met East African
‘Musiki Wa Dansi’ Classics. Hij is in 2016 uitgebracht door
Sterns Music, STCD3067-68. Een aanrader voor liefhebbers
van deze sound. Luister naar de Mara Jazz Band, de Atomic
Jazz Band, de Western Jazz Band, de Nuta Jazz Band, de Jamhuri
Jazz Band en de Morogoro Jazz Band, ze staan geen van allen op
de besproken cd maar die zou ik blind bestellen als ik jou was..

If people in Kenya and Tanzania speak about golden oldies they
call it respectively Zilizopendwa and Zilipendwa. The record we
bring today is from Kenya witness its title. It is a collection of
songs by various artists. I got inspired when buying the cd ‘Urgent
Jumping!’ yesterday, a dubbel album with East African ‘Musiki Wa
Dansi’ Classics. It was released by Sterns Music in 2016, STCD
3067-68. a recommendation to all lovers of this sound. Listen
to the Mara Jazz Band, the Atomic Jazz Band, the Western Jazz
Band, the Nuta Jazz Band, the Jamhuri Jazz Band and the Morogoro
Jazz Band. None of them appear on the cd I spoke of but I’d order
that one without thinking twice if I were you..

Toen ik die Best of Taarab hoorde die Stefan van Worldservice
van de week ge-update plaatste moest ik direkt aan deze cd denken.
Globe Style lanceerde hem in 1989 en ik vond hem van meet af aan
iets magisch hebben. De Taarab opnamen uit deze twee clubs in Tanga
vonden opvolging door vele andere bands. Bruiloftsmuziek van de Swahili
was het oorspronkelijk. Hier als kruisbestuiving met dance uit die buurt.
Black Star Musical Club stamt reeds uit de jaren vijftig en introduceerde
gitaar en basgitaar waardoor de sound in populariteit won en door een
steeds groter publiek beluisterd werd en verzameld. Ook buiten de Swahili
gemeenschap, ondanks het sterke Arabische en Islamitische karakter ervan.

When I heard Best of Taarab which Stefan of Worldservice
posted last week, it made me think of this cd immediately. Globe Style
launched it in 1989 and I though it to be magical from the first time I heard it.
The Taarab recordings made in these two clubs in Tanga found following
ups by many bands afterwards. Wedding music from the Swahili people
originally, it became very popular in places like Burundi and Eastern Zaïre.
Black Star Musical Club which was founded in the fifties added guitar and
bassguitar to it. It was this cross-fertilisation between taarab and dance music
that made people in those countries listen and collect it. Listen to the great
voices of these singers, truly magic it is..

Dit is de zesde plaat die we van deze band plaatsen. Hij stamt
uit 1978 en klinkt typisch oost Afrikaans. De stijl hangt een
beetje tussen cavacha en benga zoals je van een groep uit
deze contrijen zou mogen verwachten. Congolese invloeden
maar toch echt Kenyaans. Een heerlijk album, niet te missen..

This is the sixth record we post by this band. It is from the year
1978 and sounds typical east African. Its style covers both benga
and cavacha, just the way we’re supposed to expect from a group
from these parts. Congolese influences but still really Kenyan.
A very nice record, not to be missed..

Vandaag weer eens iets tamelijk bijzonders. Deze plaat is
zogezegd ‘ungoogleable’, alleen na diep graven vindt je er
iets over. Op Pathé / EMI en uit welk jaar is niet duidelijk.
Een boeiende verzameling liedjes met Sam Mangwana
en diverse andere artiesten. Een enkele track is reeds
eerder gepasseerd maar de meeste nog niet op deze
pagina. Luister en geniet van ‘Place aux Jeunes’.

is so to speak ‘ungoogleable’, only when digging deep we
find a little something about it. On Pathé / EMI and from
what year remains unclear. An exciting collection of songs
with Sam Mangwana and several others. One or two tracks
have passed by earlier but most of them are here first time.
