What have we got for you today ? A rare Senegalese album by
Orchestre du Bawobab ( Boabab ). Strange thing about this LP is
the fact that side one contains 5 tracks while the sleeve only speaks
of 4. Now I don’t understand a word of Wolof or whatever language
they sing in here. Listening really good made me gamble a bit.
Track 1 & 2 are most certainly tagged as they should. In track 5,
I think I hear the word ‘Wango’ a few times so that leaves 3 & 4.
One of those tracks must be ‘Sama xol bul dem’ and the other is
unknown. I just gambled and suggest track 4 is the unknown factor.
I might be wrong, if anyone can clear up this matter, that would be great.
If I mistake you should all rename the tracks in the right order and so.
One way or the other, this is a fine piece of Senegalese music history.P.S. I found a tracklist on the web that tells us track 1 is called
‘Seeri Takama’, a name that does not appear on the sleeve at all.
Could that be the missing track ?
Hope you enjoy !tracks;

From 1977 we have this LP of Bembeya Jazz National. It is a
re-release from the 1969 album. In 1972 it was already subject
of a second release. Such relaxed atmosphere here, I love that
mellow Mandingo mood. Only two tracks on this album and it’s
their first appearance at the GG. It was about time for another
post on the Syliphone Conakry label from la République de Guinée.tracks;

After Youssou N’dour broke through European with ‘Bitim Rew Immigres’, I
decided to dig in to his past. Then I discovered Etoile de Dakar and Star
Band de Dakar. I had a kind of crush on this group, ever since the first
notes I laid my ears on. Absolutely great sound, so when I found this one
at the fair I was thrilled. Enjoy this lovely album and if you like it,
you can find more in the Afro-Cuban or Senegal section, below left.tracks;

This is an album of Ambassadeur International, Ex Ambassadeurs
du Motel de Bamako. It’s a late 70’s album with the young Salif
Keita and his fantastic voice. Sweet old Mandingo with Kante Manfila,
Cissoko Moussa, Ousmane Kouyate and Sekou Diabate to call a few.
If you know the exact year, will you tell us ?tracks;

The Guinée Syliphone label is very popular among collectors of
West-African music. On fairs you find these albums for prices
up to € 120,-. Crazy amounts of course, and by paying it, it
only gets worse. Here is one by Bala et ses Balladins and it is
a fantastic one. I don’t know about you but to my humble opinion,
they have reached their objective. This is just beautiful, my
favourite track, ‘Paulette’. What superb vocals, and that hornsection..tracks;
