In de categorie oude popplaten vandaag het debuutalbum
van de Sparks. In den beginne noemden ze zich nog Halfnelson,
de naam die al snel om commerciele redenen werd veranderd
in Sparks. Alleen dit eerste album is onder deze naam. Gepro-
duceerd door Todd Rundgren en een elpee die de broertjes
Russell en Ron Mael weinig tot geen succes bracht. Verder
met Earle en Jim Mankey en Harley Feinstein. Zelf heb ik
er altijd met plezier naar geluisterd ..

Back in 1971 they called themselves Halfnelson, a name they
changed in Sparks very quickly for commercial reasons. Only
the first album was released under this name. Produced by
Todd Rundgren and an elpee that didn’t bring fortune and
fame to the brothers Russell and Ron Mael. Also with Earle

Tja Gerrit, je zei het al, ik ben benieuwd hoeveel reacties je hierop
krijgt. Alleen jij kon je er nog mee identificeren kennelijk. Dit is echter
geen reden om mijn Zappa revival te cancelen. Het is december en dat
is de maand van nostalgische popplaten hier op de Global Groove. Hier
is dus deel twee in de Frank Zappa en de Mothers of Invention story.
Absolutely Free, een heerlijke uitspatting uit het jaar 1967, luister ..

Yes folks, as blogpal Gerrit already predicted, the first Mothers of Invention
did not provoke any reactions except for his own. Meanwhile we continue

were famous of course through Monty Pythons Flying Circus.
Since small I was very much amused by everything out of
the ordinary, absurd, freaky if you will .. The music
of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention came to me
when I was about 15 years old and it shook me. My first
encounter was with ‘Live at Fillmore East’ a live registration
that left me with red ears at that young age. My love for the
works of Frank Zappa was born. Later I managed to collect
most of his wonderful records. If you are young like I was
then, let me shock you a bit and let you hear the works of
this great musician. This is his very first from 1966.

Circus. Vanaf jonge leeftijd werd ik altijd al blij van alles wat
baanbrekend anders was, lekker absurd en freaky als je wil..

bereikte me op vijftien jarige leeftijd, het was de live plaat
‘Live at Fillmore East’ die me met rode oortjes achterliet.
Mijn liefde voor het werk van Frank Zappa was geboren.
Later wist ik de meeste van zijn geweldige elpees te be-
machtigen. Als jij nu zo jong bent als ik toen, laat me je
dan shockeren met de werken van deze grote musicus.

Om niet nader verklaarbare redenen duikt er altijd een gevoel
van nostalgie op zo tegen het eind van het jaar. Er komen platen
uit de kast die er al 30 of 40 jaar in staan. In 1974 maakte hij dit
album wat zijn laatste bleek te worden. Tim Buckley, de vader van
Jeff, nam een lijn coke dacht hij. Het bleek echter een cocktail van
heroine en morfine te zijn en werd hem fataal. Hij was slechts 28.
Tim’s unieke muziek was een mix van pop en soul en had een heel
eigen geluid. Zijn laatste plaat was de eerste die ik van hem hoorde
waarschijnlijk ergens in 1977, sindsdien ben ik altijd een groot fan
geweest. Hoog tijd dat hij zijn intrede maakt hier op de GG. Deze
zal ongetwijfeld navolging krijgen. Luister naar de magische
sound van Timothy Charles Buckley III, een cult held ..

Without explainable reason, around this time of year, a feeling
of nostalgia always pops up. Records that have been on the shelf
for 30 or 40 years come out and relive. In 1974 he made this album
which became his last one. Tim Buckley, Jeff’s father, thought he took
a line of coke. It appeared to be a cocktail of heroin and morfine and
killed him. He was only 28 years old. Tim’s unique musical style was
a mixture of pop, soul and avantgarde, funky and very much his own.
His last record was the first one I heard, probably somewhere in 1977.
I have been a huge fan eversince. High time his work is posted here
at the GG. It will be followed up without doubt. Listen to the magical
sound of Timothy Charles Buckley III, one of my all time heroes ..

In de categorie favoriete pop platen uit de oude doos brengen
we vandaag deze met Jerry Riopelle uit 1974. Het hele album
is zeer te genieten maar vooral track 3, ‘Naomi’s Song’ is een
lieveling die altijd veel gedraaid werd en wordt. Jerry schreef
en produceerde veel voor anderen. Dit is zijn derde solo plaat.

In the catagory favourite pop albums today we have this record
with Jerry Riopelle from 1974. The whole album is very enjoyable
but especially track #3, ‘Naomi’s Song’ is a darling which was and
is played a lot. Jerry wrote and produced much for other artists,
this is his third solo album.

When the weather is changing and fall drops in on us, I always tend
to start playing more popmusic. Atmospheric stuff with lots of variety.
Something quite else is this cd on the prestigious Luaka Bop label of
David Byrne. His selections are outstanding and surprising. This album
is from 1991, already 28 years of age but feels like yesterday. Mr. Byrne
treats us with music from the UK, Brazil, the US and Cuba. A nice bunch
of songs in different styles and moods, listen ..

P.S. I discovered one strange mistake, track #9 is not Agepê as written
on the cd’s cover. It is Martinho da Vila with Claustrofobia.

Als het weer omslaat en de herfst zijn onstuimige intrede maakt, neig ik
steeds vaker naar popmuziek. Atmosferische mengeling van stijlen en
stemmingen. Iets tamelijk anders dan wat je hier gewend bent is dit. Op
het prestgieuze Luaka Bop label van David Byrne komt deze bonte ver-
zameling tracks die stammen uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Brazilië, de USA
en Cuba. Het gaat van links naar rechts en andersom, luister ..

P.S. Ik ontdekte een vreemde fout, track #9 is niet Agepê zoals de
cd omslag vermeldt. Het is Martinho da Vila met Claustrofobia.

Malcolm John (Mac) Rebennack, better known as Dr. John or
Dr. John the Night Tripper passed away on thursday june 6th.
His musical career stretched from the late fifties till the end
of his life. Dr. John died of a heart attack. I was only 10 years
old when the good doctor released his first album. Too young
to realise but when growing up and got familiar with his work,
it captured me completely. Today I bring you his first album,
Gris-Gris from 1968 and his most funky record, Desitively
Bonnaroo from 1974 made with Allen Toussaint and the guys
from the Meters. Also some rare recordings from VPRO’s
Dutch rock festival 1970. Read his story at Wikipedia. and see
his discography at Discogs. In 2012 Dr. John had a kind of
come back. He released a great record with Dan Auerbach
(known from the Black Keys). Locked Down, an ode to the
old days. Dr. John shall be dearly missed, his records
played for ever more ..

jong om er bewust van te zijn maar toen ik hem op latere leeftijd
ontdekte was ik totaal onder de indruk van zijn werk. Vandaag
breng ik zijn eerste album, Gris-Gris uit 1968 en zijn meest funky
plaat, Desitively Bonnaroo uit 1974 met Allen Toussaint en de
jongens van the Meters. Tevens wat zeldzame opnamen van
VPRO’s Piknik uit 1970. Lees zijn levensverhaal op Wikipedia en

een toffe plaat uit met Dan Auerbach (bekend van de Black
