The Bhundu Boys, 5 guys from Zimbabwe who mixed
chimurenga with pop music and other European and
American styles. They were quite popular in the eighties.
This is one of the albums that made them known in our
part of the world. Listen to the style they called ‘jit’.

Wanted to post this LP way earlier, however because of
a disturbing series of ticks and tacks straight from the
beginning, I posponed it a couple of times. Today I decided
to post it anyway and fade start past the disturbance. You
must know that we miss a couple of tones consequently.
It’s a shame our Thomas kept his handkerchief wrapped
around his microphone, other than that it sounds cristal clear.
Still, worth a couple of spins, I leave you with this ‘chimurenga’
from Zimbabwe which we didn’t have for quite some time.

As we get closer to the worldchampionship of football, we slowly move
southwards in listening to African music. Some Zimbabwean chimurenga
is exactly what we need now. Jonah Moyo and Devera Ngwena, their sharp
guitars and superb singing, oh man, I just love this.

Another group we haven’t heard before at this page is this one.
It’s a recording on the great Gramma label from Zimbabwe.
Formed in 1977, Kasongo was comprised of former liberation
fighters who had sought exile in Tanzania before independence.
The band picked up local influences of East African music while
forming their distinctive chimurenga sound away from home.

Highly infectious is this Music From Zimbabwe. Jonah Moyo
and his Devera Ngwena are extremely popular in their
country. Very understandable if you hear this superb LP.
This is volume 10 of a series which I hope to bring to you
in the future. Most of them are still on my huntinglist.
Next month we’ll already have the next big recordfair
in Utrecht. I am already looking forward to it.

Liberation war singer CDE Chinx is committed to revolutionary
music. His music is based on battlesongs, and deal about patriotism,
discipline and anti-imperialism. It’s been censored a lot and it’s said that
either you love it or you hate it. To me it’s quite difficult to determine,
the shona language is impossible to understand so I just judge it by
it’s musical value. Mellow mbira sound, jit, shona, chimurenga ?
I am still learning here but I kinda like it, cool and easy Zimbabwe beat.

Dance rhythms hot like fire, strong and sharp guitar-riffs and
four voices that round up the sound to make you go mad on
the dancefloor. The Four Brothers were Zimbabwe’s No 1 band
in this genre for decades. The band’s leader, Marshall Munhumumwe
is Thomas Mapfumo’s uncle, he suffered from a stroke in 1997 and
can unfortunately perform no longer. ‘The Four Brothers’ took this
name to remain equal, so no brother would become ‘big’. Many
Zimbabwean groups broke up because of that before them.
Shona music or Chimurenga, either way seductive stuff.
Go dance like crazy with the Four Brothers.

Robson Banda is a Congolese musician in Zimbabwe. He worked with
Thomas Mapfumo, Jonah Moyo and many others. Although Congolese,
Robson sings his music in Shona language and brings it close to genuine
Chimurenga. Including mbira-based guitar licks and elements of Jit.

If you collect worldmusic it is like exploring unknown terrain all
the time. One is learning new names and forms and remains
a student forever. I first learned about chimurenga through the
music of Thomas Mapfumo and fell for it straight away. Then slowly
I started to discover artists like Four Brothers or Oliver Mtukudzi
and Jonah Moyo. Only recently I learned about Simon Chibetu & his
Orchestra Dendera Kings. When I visited Gent in Belgium last week,
I found this LP and some other interesting Zimbabwean music to be
posted soon. To be honest I have not found the difference between
the Zimbabwean styles yet. There’s chimurenga, jit and mbira. The
music of Simon Chimbetu, being Congolese, is also called party rumba
or Zim Rhumba. What coincidence to find my collegue posting this
same time. I guess it was meant to be, enjoy.
