Toen ik die Best of Taarab hoorde die Stefan van Worldservice
van de week ge-update plaatste moest ik direkt aan deze cd denken.
Globe Style lanceerde hem in 1989 en ik vond hem van meet af aan
iets magisch hebben. De Taarab opnamen uit deze twee clubs in Tanga
vonden opvolging door vele andere bands. Bruiloftsmuziek van de Swahili
was het oorspronkelijk. Hier als kruisbestuiving met dance uit die buurt.
Black Star Musical Club stamt reeds uit de jaren vijftig en introduceerde
gitaar en basgitaar waardoor de sound in populariteit won en door een
steeds groter publiek beluisterd werd en verzameld. Ook buiten de Swahili
gemeenschap, ondanks het sterke Arabische en Islamitische karakter ervan.

When I heard Best of Taarab which Stefan of Worldservice
posted last week, it made me think of this cd immediately. Globe Style
launched it in 1989 and I though it to be magical from the first time I heard it.
The Taarab recordings made in these two clubs in Tanga found following
ups by many bands afterwards. Wedding music from the Swahili people
originally, it became very popular in places like Burundi and Eastern Zaïre.
Black Star Musical Club which was founded in the fifties added guitar and
bassguitar to it. It was this cross-fertilisation between taarab and dance music
that made people in those countries listen and collect it. Listen to the great
voices of these singers, truly magic it is..

Toch brengen we vandaag een plaatje met de titel, fijne vakantie.
Boum Vacances ofwel Bonnes vacances met daarop wat lekkere liedjes
uit Martinique en Guadeloupe beslaat Cadence Rampa, Compas,
Tumbélé enzo.. op Célini Records, uit het jaar ? zeg het maar..

Één van m’n vaste contacten als het gaat om zeldzame Afrikaanse
platen ontmoet ik twee maal per jaar op de Utrechtse beurs. Hij is
niet lang geleden teruggekomen uit Congo met prachtige verhalen
en dito muziek. Ik was zo gelukkig deze zeldzame elpee van hem te
kunnen overnemen. Op Google kon ik hem niet in deze uitvoering
vinden. Johnny Bokelo Isenge’s Sandokan is wel te vinden maar op
platen in andere samenstelling. Luister en huiver..

One of my steady contacts if we speak of rare African records is
this French guy whose name I can’t reveal. We meet twice a year
at the Utrecht fair. He just got back from a voyage to Congo and
brought back some amazing stories and music. I was very lucky
he sold me this rare album by Johnny Bokelo Isenge. On Google
I managed to find Sandokan in a different compilation but not as
the one we have here. Great stuff, listen and agree..

De laatste Alex Konadu die we hadden kwam door in mei van dit jaar.
Hoog tijd voor een vervolg. Dit is Awoo Ne Awo uit 1977, alweer een
juweeltje van zijn hand en een van de oudere albums die we van hem
hebben. Ik ken op z’n minst één blije bezoeker bij een post als deze
maar er zijn er ongetwijfeld nog een paar. Pak hem en luister..

The last album we had by Alex Konadu came through in may this year.
About time for a follow up. This is Awoo Ne Awo from 1977, another
jewell from his hand and one of the older records we have by him.
I know at least one happy downloader today but am sure some
others will also appreciate. Get it and spread it quickly..

Dit is de zesde plaat die we van deze band plaatsen. Hij stamt
uit 1978 en klinkt typisch oost Afrikaans. De stijl hangt een
beetje tussen cavacha en benga zoals je van een groep uit
deze contrijen zou mogen verwachten. Congolese invloeden
maar toch echt Kenyaans. Een heerlijk album, niet te missen..

This is the sixth record we post by this band. It is from the year
1978 and sounds typical east African. Its style covers both benga
and cavacha, just the way we’re supposed to expect from a group
from these parts. Congolese influences but still really Kenyan.
A very nice record, not to be missed..

Het vorige album van Camayenne Sofa was ook al zo’n killer.
Deze is van eerder in hetzelfde jaar en heet ‘la percée’, de
doorbraak. Zeer spaced out gitaarwerk en hoge lead vokalen,
kortom nog zo’n heerlijke release op het geliefde
Editions Syliphone label..

The previous album by Camayenne Sofa was also a huge killer.
The one we have today is from earlier the same year and is
called ‘la percée’, the break through. Very spaced out guitars
and wonderful high pitched vocals. In short, another great
release on the beloved Editions Syliphone label..

Noem me een oude man, ik vind dit een heerlijke sound.
Roberto Silva begon zijn carriere bij de radio in zijn geboorte
stad, Rio de Janeiro. Eerste opnames stammen uit de jaren 40.
Grote voorbeelden waren Cyro Monteiro en Orlando Silva. Hij
heeft zo’n 350 platen opgenomen op 78 toeren en een 20-tal
elpees op het Copacabana label waarvan dit de elfde is.
Roberto Silva overleed in 2012 op 92 jarige leeftijd..

Roberto Silva started his career with the radio in his city
of birth, Rio de Janeiro. His first recordings were made in
the years 1940. He found big examples in Cyro Monteiro and
Orlando Silva. He made some 350 records on 78 rotations
and 20 albums on the Copacabana label of which this is no.

De hoes is flink toegetakeld, randschade en er is op gekalkt
door een van de vorige eigenaren.Toch ben ik blij deze plaat
te hebben gevonden. Het is een tamelijk schaars opduikend
album op het Ghanese Essiebons label. Het stond op Google
ergens vermeld als solo project. Er moet ook nog een volume
2 zijn. Het openingsnummer hebben we al eerder gehoord op een
ander album maar ook in een andere versie. Het is onduidelijk
wie de andere artiesten op deze plaat zijn, als jij het weet
mag je het zeggen.. Grappig, de enige afbeelding die ik vond
was van mijn onlangs gevonden exemplaar check,

Its sleeve has quite some damage on the edges and one of the
former owners has written on it. Still I’m very happy to have
found this album. On Google it was listed somewhere as a solo
project. Their must also be a volume 2. The lp appears on the
Ghanaian Essiebons label and seems to be quite rare. We have
heard the opening song on another album but also in another
version if I’m correct. It is not entirely clear who are the
other performing artists, if you know, please tell us okay..

Uit 1968 komt deze live registratie van de Pata Cumbia door
het orkest van meester Lucho Bermudez. Het is opgenomen
in Hotel Tequendama in Bogotá. Lucho bracht de cumbia samen
met het ritme van de pata-pata en smeedde zo deze toen nieuwe
sound. 12 nummers die flink uptempo voorbij razen, lekker geda-
teerd is het wel, dansen op z’n sixties, Colombian style..

From 1968 we’ve got us this live registration of the Pata Cumbia
performed by Lucho Bermudez’ orchestra. It was recorded at the
Hotel Tequendama in Bogotá. Lucho combined cumbia and the
pata-pata rhythm and formed this then very new sound. 12 tracks
that rage by in sixties Colombian style, fast dance material..

Één van de dikste stemmen uit Brazilië is die van Alcione, wat
een onverwoestbaar geluid bracht die voort. Ik ben er altijd diep
van onder de indruk geweest, en nog steeds. Hier is een album
met veertien van haar grootste successen. Sambas en enkele
meer jazzy hits van deze diva. Mijn favoriet ? no. 13.
Veiligheidsgordels om..

One of Brazil’s strongest voices of all time belongs to Alcione.
I’ve always been enormously impressed by it, and am still.
