Ayinla Omowura. Ayinla’s apala is hot here at the GG. His
album ‘Ire Wole De’ from 1974 is the download champion
with 3138 times. Over a thousand more than the number
two which is Arsenio Rodriguez’ album ‘Primitivo’. Ayinla
Omowura has five records here, no idea why ‘Ire Wole De’
has so much more downloads than his other records. The
second one is ‘Omi Tuntun Tiru with 1499 downloads.
One way or the other, this is great apala, deep talking
drum sound, don’t miss it ..

It’s about time again to think of our Colombian listeners.
They are second on the list of countries that deliver the
most Global Groove visitors. Cumbia, vallenato, salsa and
tropical are the styles most listened to by my hungry ears
and speaking of vallenato, Miguel Durán is one of the
favourites on my list. This is his 1973 album that comes
first on Discogs, not sure if it is in fact his first record. Still
on the lookout for the album which contains ‘India Matea’
which we know from the Fiesta Vallenata collector. A quick
count shows I’ve got 18 Miguel Durán records, with only
five posted we still have a bunch in the waiting room.

this one is dedicated to you guys .. and you Ian,
is this music for your hungry ears as well ?

Het is wel weer eens tijd om aan onze Colombiaanse
luisteraars te denken, tenslotte levert Colombia, op de USA
na, de meeste bezoekers aan de Global Groove. Cumbia,

gaan bij mij en als we het over vallenato hebben is Miguel
Durán zeker één van m’n favorieten. Dit is een plaat uit 1973,
op Discogs als eerste vermeld, geen idee of het daadwerkelijk
zijn eerste was. Nog altijd op zoek naar het album waar het
nummer ‘India matea’ opstaat wat we kennen van de verza-
melaar Fiesta Vallenata. Van de 18 Miguel Durán elpees in
de collectie is dit pas nummer vijf, nog flink wat te gaan.

We are very lucky to have this rare Etsakor highlife album.
First, it is super rare and hard to find, Discogs doesn’t know
it as far as I could find. Second, yesterday I was on Utrecht’s
Mega Record and CD fair. For the first time after two years of
canceled fairs we were finally allowed to dig some crates again.
It was build up day for the traders and today the whole thing
is canceled due to Covid numbers again. A very sad day for all
traders and visitors. Everything ready to go and then a no go.
It feels unfair that I came home with a bag full of records,
one way or the other, let us listen with extra pleasure ..

We hebben enorm veel mazzel dat we deze zeldzame Etsakor highlife
plaat vandaag hebben. Ten 1e, hij is echt heel zeldzaam en zelfs
Discogs kent hem niet. 2e ding is, gisteren was ik op de opbouwdag
van de Platen en cd beurs in Utrecht. Voor het eerst in twee jaar
mochten we weer eens lekker ‘crate diggen’. ‘s Avonds nog besloot
de organisatie de beurs alsnog af te blazen wegens de hoog oplopende
Covid cijfers. Een heel trieste dag voor alle platendealers en bezoekers.
Alles klaar om te gaan en dan alsnog gecanceled. Het voelt oneerlijk
dat ik met een tas vol platen thuis kwam, maar ja, hoe dan ook,
laten we maar met extra veel plezier luisteren dan ..

From a crate digging trip in Portugal we find this quite rare
collector of Angolan semba. An underrated type of music
that can clearly use some more attention. Our dear colleague
Stefan from Worldservice brought us ‘Folclore de Angola‘ in
2009, an album which contains a few of the same artists and
from the same period. It is very difficult to find records from
Angola, with a bit of luck on the next record fair.
Get it and spread it ..

Portugal, vandaag deze verzamelaar. Semba uit Angola
is een ondergewaardeerde muzieksoort die wel wat
extra aandacht verdient. Onze blog collega Stefan van
Worldservice bracht ons deze ‘Folclore de Angola‘ in 2009.
een plaat met enkele van dezelfde artiesten en uit dezelfde
tijd. Het is moeilijk platen uit Angola te vinden, met een
beetje geluk op de komende beurs. Pak weer mee
en deel met je vrienden ..

I just got the message from blogfriend Mouhamadou, Bopol
Mansiamina died of a stroke last week, november 7.
Guitarist, bass player Bopol worked with so many artists during
his life, read his Wikipedia page to get the full information.
Mouhamadou asked me if I have his 1988 album which contains
the song ‘Ce le’. Unfortunately I do not. To hear it anyway we can
listen on Youtube instead. Below you may find the links to a
number of records with Bopol. Syllart has summoned me to
remove their Bopol albums some time ago, those are not
available here anymore. R.I.P. Paul Mansiamina Mfoko ..

Ik ontving zojuist via blogvriend Mouhamadou het bericht dat
Bopol Mansiamina aan een beroerte is overleden afgelopen
zondag 7 November. Gitarist en bassist Bopol werkte met
zoveel artiesten, lees zijn Wikipedia pagina om een volledig
beeld te krijgen. Mouhamadou vroeg me of ik zijn album uit 1988
heb met het nummer ‘Ce le’. Helaas heb ik die niet. Om het toch
te luisteren hebben we Youtube bv. Hier onder vindt je een aantal
van zijn platen, Syllart heeft me een tijd geleden gesommeerd
hun Bopol albums te verwijderen, deze zijn hier dus niet langer
beschikbaar. R.I.P. Paul Mansiamina Mfoko ..

Good morning, something out of the ordinary today. It
is because I need a certain fragment of this album for a
project that I had to digitize it this morning. When I was
about 15/16 years old I listened to a whole lot of jazz-rock,
stuff like Stanley Clarke, Jeff Beck, Billy Cobham and the
Mahavishnu Orchestra. This how I got to listen to John
McLaughlin’s work among which this record. The free-jazz
here is no music you will find at the GG in general.
An exception ..

Goeiemorgen, eens iets totaal anders vandaag. Ik heb een
passage van deze plaat nodig voor een project, zodoende
moest ik hem vanmorgen digitaliseren. Toen ik zo’n 15/16
jaar oud was luisterde ik veel naar jazz-rock. Muziek van
Stanley Clarke, Jeff Beck, Billy Cobham en ook the Maha-
vishnu Orchestra. Zodoende kwam ook deze eerste van John
McLaughlin op mijn pad. De free-jazz hier is geen muziek
die je op de GG vaker aan gaat treffen hoor.

Domingo Garcia Henriquez was born in Santiago de los
Caballeros in Nagua, Dominican Republic in 1943. He was
better known as Tatico, one of the best accordion players
in Merengue Tipico, a fast style merengue. Tatico began his
career in 1966 by appearing on a popular radio station and
was known for adding instruments to the traditional line-up.
He died too young in a car accident, only 32 years of age ..

Domingo Garcia Henriquez , geboren in Santiago de los
Caballeros in Nagua, Dominicaanse Republiek in 1943 was
beter bekend als Tatico. Hij was één van de beste accor-
deonisten binnen de Merengue Tipico, een snelle stijl.
Tatico begon zijn carrière in 1966 door te verschijnen
in een programma op een zeer populair radio station.
Hij werd bekend door het toevoegen van diverse in-
strumenten aan de traditionele merengue line-up.
Hij overleed veel te jong in een auto ongeluk,
slechts 32 jaar oud ..

To follow up on the first volume I’m taking the liberty to bring
you the second volume as well. It was downloaded from the
great Zecalouro’s Loronix many years ago. (if I’m not mistaking)
The quality is a bit different than you’re used to find here, only
192 kbps. The music is very nice however so
enjoy listening to it like always.

Met dit tweede volume volgen we het eerste op. Ik ben zo vrij
geweest de files te gebruiken van Zecalouro’s Loronix (als ik me
niet vergis tenminste) De kwaliteit is niet helemaal wat je hier
gewend bent, slechts 192 kbps. De muziek is echter
heerlijk dus geniet ervan als anders ..

Some time ago I got confused when I found this fine samba album.
At first I thought I already had it. It was posted in february this year.
What do we have here ? Both records came out on Musidisc. The
first side has the same 7 songs, except that track 1 and 6 are reversed.
The second side however has seven totally different songs. I’m quite
sure the one we have today is the original first album, while the one
we had earlier, called vol. 1, was made without the introductions.
They have left away the studio intro, on which we hear the title,
sometimes with first or second take. Why they changed the
second seven songs remains a mystery. Do you know why .. ?

Enige tijd geleden toen ik dit mooie samba album voor de tweede keer
vond raakte ik even in de war. Ik had ‘m al, maar dan in een geheel an-
dere uitvoering. Gepost in Februari dit jaar. De eerste kant bevat
dezelfde zeven nummers, alleen met track 1 en 6 omgekeerd. De tweede
kant echter, bevat zeven totaal andere nummers. Ik weet tamelijk zeker
dat dit het eerste origineel is. Degene die we eerder hadden, vol. 1,
werd later gemaakt zonder de studio introducties. Daarop horen we de
titels, soms met eerste of tweede ‘take’ erbij. Waarom ze de
tweede zeven nummers hebben veranderd blijft
een mysterie. Weet jij waarom .. ?

Most calypsonians stood on stage motionless when singing.
Not Slinger Francisco, he moved around like James Brown.
When someone said,”why don’t you just sing instead of moving
around like a Sparrow?”, his name was born. After just Sparrow
and Little Sparrow, he took the stage name ‘Mighty Sparrow’.
Slinger made a huge pile of records, this one is from 1967.

De meeste calypsonians stonden stil tijdens het zingen, Slinger
Francisco niet. Hij danste in het rond als James Brown. Toen iemand
zei,”waarom zing je niet gewoon in plaats van rond te dwarrelen
als een ‘Sparrow’ (mus)”, was zijn nieuwe artiestennaam een feit.
Na gewoon Sparrow en Little Sparrow werd zijn naam uiteindelijk
‘Mighty Sparrow’. Hij maakte een grote stapel platen,
dit is er een uit 1967 ..
