When listening to ‘Chutney’, one first thinks, is this Bollywood ?
You don’t expect this music to come from the Island of Trinidad.
His forefathers brought it with them some 135 years ago. Sundar
Popo is credited as the father of chutney music. India’s famous
Anup Jalota and his group made this record with him. We had
one album on which Sundar Popo also performed.

He was called el Montunero de Cuba, Wilfredo Leiva (Pio)
Pascual. May 5, 1917 – march 23, 2006. One of the most
popular singers in the Son Montuno genre. he wrote the
hit song ‘Francisco Guayabal’, made famous by Beny Moré.
Pio worked with Bebo Valdez, Noro Morales, Compay
Segundo, Orquesta Aragon, Mariano Mercerón, Conjunto
Caney and Riverside. he was also one of the old stars who
joined Ry Cooder and Juan de Marcos González in their

Until today we only had two records with leading
Ghanaian highlife figure Peter Kwabena Yamoah
and his Yamoah’s Band. More or less five years ago
and ten years ago. Being responsible for the discovery
of Nana Kwame Ampadu and his African Brothers Band,
Yamoah was a highlife pioneer. He founded his band in
1957. Crate digging in Paris I recently found this splendid
record wich contains some hot highlife tunes ..

Yamoah’s Band. Zo’n vijf jaar en tien jaar geleden alweer.
Yamoah was een highlife pionier die o.a. mede verantwoor-

After being in an accident on the VanWick Expressway in
New York in 1970, Lord Nelson had to recover for about
two years. Luckily he picked up his career where he had
left off and came back with this album in 1973. Later
he became a soca star. Personally I like the calypso
a whole lot better. Get it and spread it like always ..

Nadat hij betrokken was geweest in een auto ongeluk op

The Ikenga Super Stars of Africa, led by Vincent Okoroego,
a former member of Steven Osita Osadebe’s Nigeria Sound
Makers were a leading Igbo “guitar highlife” group of the
seventies and eighties in Nigeria. The Ikengas called their
style of music “Ikwokilikwo”, a fast-paced form of highlife
popularized by Oliver de Coque and Godwin Kabaka Opara
of the Oriental Brothers, amongst others.The band went on
to record several LP’s, while establishing themselves as one
of the most beloved Nigerian groups of all time, not only in
their homeland but across Africa and in Europe as well.

If I hear the song ‘Conscious Man’ I go back in time. It must have
been around 1980 I first heard the song, it brings back memories.
Now I’m a little confused about something. I have always experienced
it as a Lee Perry production. On the 1979 album ‘Consciousness‘
the producer of the song is claimed to be Tony J. On this record
that was only released in 1992, it is credited to Lee Perry. Now
who really was the producer? On this page I read Lee Perry did
the job in 1977. If anyone can clear up the matter, please do.

het is een plaat die de serieuze Lee Perry verzamelaar

Today, dear music friends, we pay tribute to Rainford Hugh
Perry, better known as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. He died in Noel
Holmes Hospital in Western Jamaica age 85 yesterday.
Lee Perry was a legend and a pioneer in reggae music.
He worked with Bob Marley, Junior Murvin, Max Romeo,
Junior Byles, The Congos, The Heptones, Jah Lion, just to
name a view. I saw him quite a number of times and am
a huge fan of his groundbreaking work. Let’s all play
his music for at least a week. There are so many
wonderful records to enjoy. Condolences to
his family and friends. RIP dear Scratch ..
