We had one track of this album, all the way back in 2008 on
one of my Reggae Monster Originals series. It was the title
song. Produced by the great Sugar Minott this record is a
killer. From 1985 and one of my all time favs. Listen to this
guy’s raw yet golden voice, with the Black Roots Players ..

Hier hebben we nog zo’n pracht plaat van Orkes Gambus Al Fata.
Ik heb verder weinig te melden over de groep behalve dat ik uit
betrouwbare bron heb dat zij slechts met de grootsten uit het
veld platen maakten. Op de laatste platenbeurs in Utrecht heb
ik een aantal gambus platen gevonden, heel speciaal spul,
dit verdient je bijzondere aandacht, luister ..

Kofi is here with a record from 1988, on Rogers All Stars. They
used to operate from Nigeria for many years. Find another 11
of their albums below. So far they have found lots of happy
listeners here so I’m quite sure this one will do too ..

Toen ik vanmorgen Alerta Geral van Alcione aan het opnemen was zag
ik dat een van mijn favoriete tracks, ‘A Volta do Mundo’ geschreven was
door Ederaldo Gentil. In mijn digitale collectie vond ik vervolgens dit album.
Ik moet het ooit eens ergens gedownload hebben maar weet absoluut niet
meer waar. Toch kon ik niet weerstaan het te posten, zo mooi vind ik hem.
Mocht ik het bij jou vandaan hebben, zeg het dan even, het zou wel zo netjes
zijn de bron te vermelden. Tot die tijd, genieten we van Pequenino ..

When I was recording Alerta Geral by Alcione this morning I found that
one of my favourite songs, ‘A Volta do Mundo’ was written by Ederaldo Gentil.
In my digital collection then I found this here album. I must have
downloaded it myself somewhere but I can impossibly remember where.
I could not resist posting it though, I like it very much. If it was your site
where I found it, please leave us a note. It would be decent to tell what

Malcolm John (Mac) Rebennack, better known as Dr. John or
Dr. John the Night Tripper passed away on thursday june 6th.
His musical career stretched from the late fifties till the end
of his life. Dr. John died of a heart attack. I was only 10 years
old when the good doctor released his first album. Too young
to realise but when growing up and got familiar with his work,
it captured me completely. Today I bring you his first album,
Gris-Gris from 1968 and his most funky record, Desitively
Bonnaroo from 1974 made with Allen Toussaint and the guys
from the Meters. Also some rare recordings from VPRO’s
Dutch rock festival 1970. Read his story at Wikipedia. and see
his discography at Discogs. In 2012 Dr. John had a kind of
come back. He released a great record with Dan Auerbach
(known from the Black Keys). Locked Down, an ode to the
old days. Dr. John shall be dearly missed, his records
played for ever more ..

Zijn muzikale carrière spande zich uit vanaf de late jaren vijftig
tot aan zijn dood. Dr. John stierf aan een hart aanval. Ik was pas
10 jaar toen de goede dokter zijn eerste plaat uitbracht. Veel te
jong om er bewust van te zijn maar toen ik hem op latere leeftijd
ontdekte was ik totaal onder de indruk van zijn werk. Vandaag
breng ik zijn eerste album, Gris-Gris uit 1968 en zijn meest funky
plaat, Desitively Bonnaroo uit 1974 met Allen Toussaint en de
jongens van the Meters. Tevens wat zeldzame opnamen van
VPRO’s Piknik uit 1970. Lees zijn levensverhaal op Wikipedia en
bekijk zijn discografie op Discogs. In 2012 bracht Dr. John nog
een toffe plaat uit met Dan Auerbach (bekend van de Black
Keys). Locked Down, een tribuut aan zijn oude werk. De dokter zal
enorm gemist worden, zijn platen nog lang gedraaid ..

Onlangs vond je hier voor het eerst in 11 jaar gambus uit Indonesië.
Normaal gesproken ga je hiervoor natuurlijk naar Madrotter Treasure
Hunt van onze vriend Henk. Van Al Wathan Medan die we vandaag
hebben heeft hij er ook verschillende. Gambus heeft wel wat raakvlak
met Taarab uit Tanzania al komt dit natuurlijk uit een heel andere buurt.
Beide stromingen hebben een Arabische feel en oorsprong ..

Recently you found Indonesian gambus here for the first time in 11 years.
Normally of course one would go to Madrotter Treasure Hunt to find this
music. Our friend Henk also has various albums with the group we’ve got
today, Al Wathan Medan. Gambus somehow relates to Taarab music from
Tanzania eventhough it is from a total different region. Both styles have an
Arabic feel and origin. Give it a couple of spins and compare ..

It’s been almost a year since we had this record by The Harmony
Kings with General Franco Lee Ezute, our friend Nick added a nice
video afterwards. About a week ago fellow blogger Jillem of Holland
Tunnel Dive also had a good release. Today another one of their
records. This one is from 1990 and contains four songs. General
Franco lee is considered one of the greatest Igbo Highlife artists.
No deep digging reviews here but deep rhythms, get & spread ..

Het is bijna een jaar geleden dat we deze plaat hadden met de
Harmony Kings met General Franco Lee Ezute, onze blogvriend
Nick voegde er achteraf nog een mooie video aan toe. Ongeveer
een week geleden had collega blogger Jillem van Holland Tunnel
Dive ook een goede plaat van ze. Vandaag nog zo’n schijf vinyl.
Deze is uit 1990 en bevat vier songs. General Franco Lee wordt
beschouwd als een van de grotere Igbo Hihlife artiesten. Geen
diepgravende achtergrond info hier maar wel diepe sounds ..
(titel 2 is grappig voor Spaans sprekende Nederlanders)

Het is niet de eerste keer dat het gebeurt, ik rip een plaat en kijk
dan altijd even of ik hem niet per ongeluk al eens eerder heb op-
genomen. M’n geheugen laat me wel eens in de steek. Bij deze
met Docteur Nico wist ik het zeker. Het was een album op Sonafric,
SAF 50007. Zelfde nummers, a- en b-zijde verwisseld maar verder
gelijke oorsprong. 100% zeker dat ik die in het verleden gepost heb
en nu is hij er niet meer. Toen we nog bij Blogspot zaten gebeurde
dat wel vaker. Ze gooiden er platen vanaf zonder je in te lichten.
Goed, hoe dan ook, vandaag is hij hier terug om te blijven. Ik heb
de link naar de Sonafric plaat er ook bij gezet, kun je vergelijken.
Dit is het origineel op Ngoma, veel luisterplezier weer ..

It is not the first time this happens, I’m ripping a record and always
check if I haven’t accidently ripped it before. My memory fails every
now and then so .. With this album by Docteur Nico I was quite sure.
It was a record on the Sonafric label, SAF 50007. Same songs, a- and
b-side switched around but absolutely the same origin. 100% sure I
have posted it before but somehow it disappeared. When we still
were with Blogspot this happened more often. They just threw off
an album without telling you anything. Well okay, one way or the
other, today it is here to stay. I have also added the Sonafric rip
so you can compare them. This is the original on Ngoma.
