Most people just know him from his membership in the Buena Vista
Social Club project. Ry Cooder pulled a range of old Son Montuno
artists from the dust in 1997. Wilfriedo ‘Pio’ Leyva Pascual already had
an impressive career behind him at the time. He was one of the greats
in the field and was also called ‘El Montunero de Cuba’. He was active
as a bongo player since 1923 but first sung in 1932 with Orquesta
Caribe. Pio Leyva sung with artists such as Orquesta Aragón, Beny
Moré, Bebo Valdez, Noro Moralez and with Compay Segundo who
was also member of Buena Vista Social Club. Further he sang with
Marciano Mercerón, Conjunto Caney and Riverside. He died of a
heart attack in 2006, age 89, listen to el Montunero de Cuba..

De meeste mensen kennen hem slechts door zijn rol in het Buena

Henri Bowane was a crucial figure in the developement of Congo rumba
in Kinshasa ( then Leopoldville ) during the early 1950s. He was the first
professional boss and mentor of the legendary Franco, and was a big star
in his own right, releasing dozens of hit 78rpms. In 1960, Bowane became
founder/manager of Ry-Co Jazz, who introduced Congo rumba to countries
such as Sierra Leone, Senegal, Togo, Ghana and the French Antilles. By the
1970s he had settled in West Africa where he recorded this, his first and
only album. The rhythms range from rumba and cavacha through highlife

Hij werd eind jaren 40 door Henri Bowane geïntroduceerd bij Ngoma

gemaakt in samenwerking met Bavouéza Guinot en de Kongo Retro

This slice of 1976 vinyl contains two tracks we’ve seen passing by in
previous posts but is overall new at this page. Fabulous release on the

Les Bantous de la capitale was een van de bekendste Congolese rumba bands
in de sixties. Opgericht door voormalige leden van Orchestre T.P.O.K. Jazz en

Ik wist niet dat het kon gebeuren maar helaas, wegens een
administratieve fout ergens in serverland zijn we zo’n drie

In june 2008 we had an album by him, it was on Globe Style, that’s
how I got to know about him. It was released in 1985 and it took
me over 30 years to find some of his original albums. Francisco
Ulloa’s music belongs to the most traditional merengues from
the Dominican Republic and I’m very pleased to be able to bring
you ‘Divina Que Linda Eres’ from we don’t know what year.
Get it, spread it and enjoy listening again..

Het was in 1985 dat ik voor het eerst van hem hoorde. Globe Style
kwam toen met het album dat ik in juni 2008 reeds heb geplaatst.
Het duurde dus nog meer dan 30 jaar voor dat ik enkele van zijn
originele platen vond. Hier is de eerste, Divina Que Linda eres.
Francisco Ulloa’s muziek bekoorde me vanaf de eerste noten
die ik ervan hoorde. Luister zelf, deel het met je vrienden
en als jij weet uit welk jaar deze stamt, laat ons het weten..

Good morning groovers, as you can see this album by the great
Andrés Landero is not in prime condition. His records are hard to
find and until we walk into a better copy, we’ll have to settle with
this one. The sound quality is reasonable until the last track which
has some background noise unfortunately. One way or the other,
I’m still happy to have it, get it and spread it now..

Goeiemorgen groevers, je ziet het al direkt, deze plaat van de grote
Andrés Landero verkeert niet in top conditie. Zoals reeds eerder gezegd
liggen zijn albums niet voor het oprapen dus totdat er een betere kopie
wordt gevonden zullen we het met deze moeten doen. De geluidskwaliteit
is redelijk tot aan het laatste nummer een welk helaas wat rumoer met zich
meebrengt. Evenzogoed niet getreurd, we zijn blij dat we’m hebben dus
geen getreuzel en haal ‘m maar snel binnen, veel luisterplezier..

We had three of his albums so far, one on which we find two
numbers we also find on this one. No worries however, 7 other
songs make this record worth its while. He sounds like his fake
teeth do not fit well but somehow he manages to steel my heart.
Love the voice, love the instruments, simply irresistible..

We hadden reeds drie van z’n plaatjes, op één daarvan staan twee
liedjes die ook op deze voorkomen. de andere zeven nummers zijn
verschillend, dus zeker niet getreurd. Integendeel, ondanks dat het
lijkt of zijn kunstgebitje niet goed past steelt de man telkens weer
mijn hart. lekkere stem, lekkere instrumentjes, onweerstaanbaar..

it took a while but I think we finally have Zaïre Promotion vol. 1 today.
Kiland and Orchestre Mabatalai bring us this delightful album, I really
enjoy listening and hope you will as well, get it and spread it..
By the way, track two on both sides is with Orchestre Mokito.

We hadden reeds drie platen van deze man, Kiland en zijn Orchestre
Mabatalai twee maal, en met Orchestre Mokito één maal. Het heeft
even geduurd om dit eerste volume te vinden maar op de laatste
beurs in Utrecht was het dan toch eindelijk zover. Altijd een heerlijk
moment om tegen zo’n juweeltje aan te lopen, luister maar snel..
Het tweede nummer op beide zijden is overigens met Orch. Mokito.
