Today’s album is a hell of a find but unfortunately it sounds like
nothing. The whole LP has a disturbing hiss and that is a real shame.
Normally I would not ask but, which one of you smart ol’ digital devils
is the first to give us back a link with a polished version ?
( part from that little rough start )
According to the online discography’s it’s the Star Band’s first album,
from the early seventies, great historic stuff that deserves a clean listen.
Thank you for being such help!tracks;

Hearing and seeing this album by Les Bantous de la Capitale, makes me think
of the ‘african’ label. The way the label is built up, orange background, the numbering,
360.118, and how it is positioned. Maybe you can tell me Bo, isn’t this the missing
360.118 in your african list? I may be completely wrong here but it sure looks like it.
They had similar layout style. What was their connection, how did they relate?
Any way, this is an album, released on Fiesta in 1978, but the backsleeve
states it was originally recorded by ‘le Société Française du Son’ in 1968.
Songs are written by ( chronologically ), Bwanga Fély, Michel Boyibanda,
Kabongo Wetu, Pandy Saturnin and two times Nino Malapet. Damn good !tracks;

We had a couple of Laba Sosseh LP’s before but this is the
best one untill now to my humble opinion. With the famous
Orquesta Aragon, an African release but with a Cuban band.
Mellow son Cubano and Afro Cuban mingle, all relaxed
and ready for hot summer weather, let’s have some.tracks;

After Youssou N’dour broke through European with ‘Bitim Rew Immigres’, I
decided to dig in to his past. Then I discovered Etoile de Dakar and Star
Band de Dakar. I had a kind of crush on this group, ever since the first
notes I laid my ears on. Absolutely great sound, so when I found this one
at the fair I was thrilled. Enjoy this lovely album and if you like it,
you can find more in the Afro-Cuban or Senegal section, below left.tracks;

The Guinée Syliphone label is very popular among collectors of
West-African music. On fairs you find these albums for prices
up to € 120,-. Crazy amounts of course, and by paying it, it
only gets worse. Here is one by Bala et ses Balladins and it is
a fantastic one. I don’t know about you but to my humble opinion,
they have reached their objective. This is just beautiful, my
favourite track, ‘Paulette’. What superb vocals, and that hornsection..tracks;

Rumba is pure Afro-Cuban music for only voices and percussion.
It began with harber workers singing and dancing in their spare
time in the docks of Havana and Matanzas, playing rhythms on
cargo boxes. It comes in three styles, Guaguancó, Yambú and
Columbia. Carlos Embale is one of the main performers of the
guaguancó style, enjoy this rare LP.tracks;

Just after becoming independent in 1970, Mali’s young musicians
started to form a National Orchestra. Since there were much more
good players than needed, they formed A, B and C orchestras.
This was the first of them all, lead by multi-instrumentalist
‘Kélétigui Diabate’. On his West African travels he learned to play
guitar, trumpet, flute, saxophone and counter-bass. He plays the
guitar on this LP. We heard tracks 3 and 5 on the Mali Collector
some time ago already, now here’s also the rest of the only album
ever recorded by this group.tracks;

Here’s one more requested post, but remember I don’t have much of
this stuff. My copy of this rare LP looks so brand new, and still
I can’t seem to find any signs of it being re-released. It must
be a collectors-item in mint condition. Or I’m just being plane
stupid, that happens sometimes.
This sweet album was recorded in 1976.
It takes you on a West-African trip, you won’t forget !tracks;

What we have here is something quite special.
Some time ago we had ‘Etoile de Dakar’, now an LP from
before that time. This is ‘Star Band de Dakar’, already with
Youssou N’Dour but for instance also ‘Laba Sosseh’ sings his part.
Funny thing, track #3, ‘Danguele Fasso’ was written by
Larry Harlow. Youssou N’Dour sings on track 4 & 5.
Fantastic playing by Assane Thiam on ‘Tama’.
I’m sure we got some happy Global Groovers right now !tracks;
