The sound we present today is Colombian but quite different from
most we have had so far. I’m not sure if it is called gaita. In any case
it is no regular cumbia eventhough the group’s name is ‘su Cumbia’.
On the web I saw they called it Cumbia Moderna. It is comparable
with the sound of ‘Cumbia Siglo XX’ which we had in january 2017.
It is very popular with deejays of world music nowadays.
Also called Palenque, Champeta Criolla, Afro Roots..

De sound die we vandaag aan u voordragen is Colombiaans maar
tamelijk anders dan de meeste tot nu toe. Ik weet niet zeker of dit
nu gaita wordt genoemd. In ieder geval is het geen reguliere cumbia
zoals de naam van de band doet vermoeden. Ik zag online dat het
Cumbia Moderna werd genoemd. Het is enigszins te vergelijken
met het geluid van ‘Cumbia Siglo XX’ welke we in januari 2017

If we look at the countries represented in our download top
twenty, Colombia is with seven out of twenty the clear winner.
For years I thought African music would be, only because of the
amount of reactions it gains. If I look at the countries and their
amount of visitors, the USA is on top and Colombia is second.
I guess it is a language thing. Not so many Spanish speaking
people leave messages, maybe because I only write in English
and Dutch. My Spanish is not sufficient, and I guess their English
isn’t. One way or the other, it is only fair to give our Colombian
visitors the first next day. This is an album by one of Colombia’s
greatest. Calixto Ochoa deserves a bit more attention. With only
five albums on the site and a huge pile on the shelf, it is about
time. Calixto appears on this 1978 elpee with singer Luis Cuadros.

Als we kijken naar de landen die vertegenwoordigd zijn in onze
download top twintig van gisteren, is Colombia met zeven van de
twintig de duidelijke winnaar. Ik heb jaren gedacht dat Afrikaanse
muziek het zou winnen, alleen al door het aantal reacties dat we
erop krijgen. Als ik kijk naar de bezoekers aantallen van de Global
Groove, zien we de VS op één en Colombia op twee. Ik denk dat het
met taal te maken heeft. Niet zoveel Spaanstaligen laten reacties
achter, wellicht omdat ik alleen in Engels en Nederlands schrijf.
Mijn Spaans is helaas niet toereikend, en waarschijnlijk het Engels
van Spaanstaligen ook niet. Hoe dan ook, het is gerechtigheid als
eerst volgende post een Colombiaanse te doen. Dit is een plaatje
van één van Colombia’s grootsten. Calixto Ochoa verdient wel wat
meer aandacht. Met slechts vijf albums op de site en een grote
stapel op de plank werd het wel weer eens tijd. Calixto brengt
dit album met zanger Luis Cuadros.

Bij wijze van uitzondering krijg je vandaag een copy van een ceedee.
Hij is uit 1982 en staat vol met Colombiaanse hits. In der tijd heb ik
Discos Fuentes eens gemaild om te vragen of ik hier in de buurt hun
releases zou kunnen vinden. Ik kreeg een vriendelijk mailtje terug met
de boodschap dat een klein zaakje nabij de Amsterdamse Dappermarkt
eens een flinke bestelling had gedaan. Ik vond daar een mooie rij Fuentes
cd’s. Geweldig leuk natuurlijk, bijna alles meegenomen. Dit is er één van.

Im making an exception today by posting the music from a ceedee.
It is from 1982 and contains a bunch of Colombian hits. Quite some
years ago I sent an email to Discos Fuentes to ask them if there would
be an adress somewhere nearby here where I could find their releases.
They kindly responded to tell me there was a tiny record store close
to the Amsterdam Dapper Market who once bought some of their
releases. I found a nice pile of cd’s there and bought the lot. very
nice off course. This is one of them, enjoy listening again..

They used to call him El Pollo Vallenato, Luis Enrique Martinez
was one of the greatest in the field. Here at the Global Groove
we are huge admirers of his work. This album was re-released
in 1979 as Realeza Vallenata vol. 5. We are happy to have the
original 1975 issue. Listen and give him a chance..

El Pollo Vallenato noemden ze hem, Luis Enrique Martinez was
één van de grootsten in zijn vakgebied. Hier op de Global Groove
zijn we enorme liefhebbers van zijn werk. Deze plaat is heruitge-
bracht als Realeza Vallenata vol.5 in 1979. We zijn verheugd hier
het origineel uit 1975 te hebben. Luister en geef hem een kans..

Hoe het komt weet ik niet maar op de een of andere manier
heb ik een zwak voor de zang van oudere mannetjes. Dit is zo’n
geval. Hij zingt op een wat monotone manier en toch luister ik er
heel graag naar. Juancho Polo Valencia leefde van 1918 tot 1978
en liet een mooie stapel platen achter waarvan we er reeds zo’n
vier hadden. Meer van zijn werk wacht op plaatsing alhier.
Van deze is geen jaartal bekend, op Discos Fuentes..

I don’t know how and why but somehow I have a certain weekness
for the voices of older men. This is such a case. He sang in a kind of
monotonous way but I really like listening to him. Juancho Polo
Valencia lived from 1918 till 1978 and left us quite some records
of which we have seen four so far. More of his work is waiting to
get posted one fine day. No year of release on this one, on
the great Discos Fuentes..

Galleros met de geweldige Lucy Gonzalez. Wat een krachtig
stemgeluid had die meid. Niet alleen Lucy maar de hele band
komt hier goed voor de dag. Ook met de groten Julio de la
Ossa en Lucho Argain is dit een plaat om niet te missen..

Alejo of Alejandro Durán was een van de allergrootsten als
we het over vallenato hebben. Produceerde hopen platen
waaarvan dit slechts een van de vele verzamelalbums betreft.
Nube Viajera y Otros Exitos is een soort ‘Best of’ uit 1973. Er
zullen er van zijn naam nog vele volgen, voor nu,
veel luisterplezier met Nube Viajera..

Alejo or Alejandro Durán was one of the greatest if we speak
about vallenato. He produced piles of records of which this
is only one of the many collectors. Nube Viajera is a kind of
‘Best of’ album from 1973. Many albums will follow by his
hand, for now, enjoy listening to Nube Viajera..

In 1969 vond de tweede versie plaats van het Festival de la
Leyenda Vallenata in Valledupar. Op de tweede en derde
plek eindigden respectievelijk Andrés Landero en Julio de
la Ossa. Op deze plaat doen ze om beurten een nummertje
voor ons. Een stukje Colombiaanse muziek geschiedenis..

In 1969 they held the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata for
the second time in Valledupar. On second and third place
there were respectively Andrés Landero and Julio de la Ossa.
On this record they take turns in playing for us, all together
writing a piece of Colombian musical history..
