Alex Kwabena Konadu, One Man Thousand, the Wonderful
Konadu. A few names for this important figure in Ghanaian
highlife. Born in 1950, at the Adwumakase Kese in the Kwabere
No.3 district of Ashanti. Alex’ career started with Akwaboah’s
Band and the Happy Boys. After meeting with producer and
record dealer A.K. Brobbey, Alex started his own group. He
had instant succes and was judged ‘the Best Guitar of the
Year 1976 of Ghana’. One of his main albums was Asaase
Asa,, the song Asaase Asa was on various albums
among which, this one ..

Good morning, this is the second album we have with trumpeteer
Etubom Rex Williams on which we don’t hear him play the trumpet.
I don’t know why. According to the discograpy on Discogs we are
absolutely dealing with the same Etubom Rex Williams. On the
covers of his early albums we see him with trumpet. This record
appears there as well. Just like the one we had in june 2019.
One way or the other, although a little dusty and absolutely
guitar based, the highlife is quite enjoyable, side
one sounds better than side two ..

Goeiemorgen, dit is vandaag al de tweede plaat die we vinden
met trompettist Etubom Rex Williams waarop we hem geen noot
trompet horen spelen. Ik weet niet waarom. Volgens de discografie
op Discogs hebben we hier toch echt met dezelfde Etubom Rex
Williams te maken. Op de hoezen van zijn eerdere platen zien we
hem met trompet. Deze elpee staat er ook bij. Net als degene
die we in juni van 2019 hadden. Hoe dan ook, hoewel een beetje
stoffig en absoluut op gitaar gestoeld, de highlife is tamelijk okay.
Kant een klinkt beter dan kant twee ..

Today we go back to the sound of Etsakor with General Boliviia
Osigbemhe & the Great Santanas. It concerns this 1981 record.
Discogs can now add the picture of ‘Nobody is Free’ which was
still missing. The vinyl looks pretty good but the sound is a bit
poor I’m afraid. A lot of crackle. Maybe our good blog friend
Richard of Soundpatrol can help us. He does a great job remo-
ving all types of background noise. I once said, just imagine
listening by the fireside, Richard makes this no longer
necessary. From now I shall add the cleaned versions
of Soundpatrol. Enjoy the music of
Boliviia Osigbemhe ..

We gaan vandaag weer eens verder met de sound van Etsakor
met General Boloiviia Osigbemhe & the Great Santanas. Het
betreft hier dit album uit 1981. Discogs kan nu de hoes van
‘Nobody is Free’ toevoegen, deze ontbrak nog in het rijtje.
Het vinyl ziet er behoorlijk goed uit, maar klinkt helaas iets
minder, hij kraakt nogal. Misschien kan onze goede blog
vriend Richard van Soundpatrol helpen. Hij is zeer goed
in het opknappen van dit soort geluid. Ik zei ooit, stel je
voor dat je luistert bij een knapperend haardvuurtje,
dit hoeft dan niet langer. Ik zal voortaan de schone
bestanden van Soundpatrol toevoegen.

Band Smart Nkansah is back. Great band, great highlife ..

ze niet thuis horen. Een mazzeltje voor de liefhebbers onder
jullie. Zijn highlife behoort tot de beste die er is. met zanger

Now let’s continue to answer to the latest request, posting a
bit more highlife from Ghana. The album we have here also
contains two reggae tracks but were performed by Jerry
Hansen and his Ramblers International. There are three
highlife songs as well. Just what you were looking
for. Get it and spread it as usual ..

De Todd Rundgren van vanmorgen was een extraatje. Laat
ik nu maar weer even verder gaan bij het laatste verzoekje,
nl. het posten van nog wat Ghanese muziek. De plaat die we
hier hebben bevat ook twee reggae tracks, maar werd op-
genomen door jerry Hansen en zijn Ramblers International.
Er staan ook drie highlife songs op, net wat je wilde

One of our visitors was wondering why we didn’t have
Ghanaian highlife so long. Well Edwin, it is simply because
the main part of my records from Ghana has already been
posted. There are some left however. Today’s post concerns
an album from 1987 by Slim Young. It is his latest record which
was very popular in West Africa. Slim Young died in november
2001. See the back sleeve in the file for line-up ..

Ik kreeg de vraag van een van onze bezoekers waarom er al zo’n
tijd geen Ghanese highlife was. Tja Edwin, dat is eenvoudigweg
omdat ik de meeste Ghanese platen uit de collectie al gepost
heb. Er zijn er nog wel een paar over hoor. Vandaag hebben we
een plaat met Slim Young uit 1987. Het is zijn laatste welke in
West Afrika tamelijk goed werd ontvangen. Slim Young
overleed in november, 2001. Kijk voor de bezetting,
in de file, op de achterkant van de plaat ..

with the previous post, simply because I don’t have
any. The web also doesn’t give us what we’re looking
for. I found out it concerns Edo Highlife, that’s all

Dit is de tweede post met Great Ojo, dit keer verschijnt
hij met zijn Family Noble Dance Band. Ik gaf bij de vorige
plaat al geen info, eenvoudigweg omdat ik die niet heb.
Op het web vinden we ook niet wat we zouden willen.
We hebben het over Edo Highlife, meer weet ik niet.

It is very difficult to find these Etsakor records in good condition.
At a certain point one settles for a copy that leaves us something
to wish for. Finding it in mint is not only sheer impossible, if you
find one, better pull a big wallet. What do we have here today ?

Omo Smart Idornigie and his Happy Moveing Star Band is back
with this 1981 album. As said, it has some background noise but
plays fairly well. The highlife is of a deeep beauty, his records
we had before already found some happy listeners. Not much
information on his behalf is available, let’s just listen ..

Het is tamelijk moeilijk om deze Etsakor platen in goede conditie
te vinden. Op een zeker moment dien je genoegen te nemen met
een plaat die iets te wensen over laat. Hem in mint staat te vinden
is niet alleen bijna onmogelijk, als het je al lukt mag je een lieve
duit uit je zak trekken. Wat hebben we hier vandaag ?

Omo Smart Idornigie and his Happy Moveing Star Band is terug
met dit 1981 album. Zoals gezegd heeft hij wel wat achtergrond
geluiden, maar hij speelt nog redelijk goed. De highlife is van een
diepe schoonheid, zijn vorige posts vonden ook al blije luisteraars.
Niet veel informatie over deze artiest, luisteren dus maar ..

From the Niger River Delta we find this record with A.S. Eseduwo
and his Top Stars Band of Nigeria today. Not much information
about the group is available on the web. Only John B.’s Likembe
has a post where we find another of his tracks. I have added it
to the two we find on this record. If I understand well, this type
of highlife is called Awijiri and comes from the Ijaw people.
‘Kemeweri Kon Senma’ is in quite good condition and gives
us a solid listening experience, nice jumpy basslines
and vocal harmony, I’d say ‘Get it & Spread it..”

Uit de Niger River Delta vinden we vandaag deze plaat met A.S.
Eseduwo and his Top Stars Band of Nigeria. Niet veel informatie
is op het web te vinden. Alleen John B’s Likembe heeft eens een
post gehad, waarin één van zijn songs. Ik heb hem aan de andere
twee toegevoegd. Als ik het goed heb begrepen wordt dit type
highlife Awijiri genoemd en komt het van de Ijaw people.
‘Kemeweri Kon Senma’ is in prima conditie en geeft ons
een solide luister ervaring, lekkere ‘jumpy’ baslijntjes
en dito vokale harmonieën. Down, deel en luister ..

Ik kreeg gisteren de smaak weer te pakken met die fijne
Oliver de Coque plaat. Meestal doe ik het niet maar voor
de gelegenheid nog eentje vandaag. In 1988 nam Afrodisia
dit album op in de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Samen
met Ogene Records brachten ze hem uit. Hij heeft wel wat
krasjes maar speelt toch nog lekker. Special thanks gaan
o.a. uit naar King Sunny Adé en Chief Commander Ebe-
nezer Obey. Ik weet niet waarvoor, weet jij het ?

Yesterday I really got in the mood with Oliver de Coque
and that fine record. It is not my habbit to do another
straight away but for the opportunity an exception.
In 1988 Afrodisia recorded this album in the United
States. They released it together with Ogene Records.
It has a few scratches but still plays okay. Special thanks
go out to King Sunny Adé and Chief Commander Ebenezer
Obey among others. I have no idea for what. Do you ?
