On Brobisco House of Music we find this album with Asiakwa
Brass Band. In january 2012 we already had one of their albums,
it was received with big enthusiasm back then. Brass Band highlife
from Ghana is the type of music that makes you instantly
happy. On this record the group pays tribute to Alex
Konadu with the ‘Agyata Wuo’ and ‘Nsuo Amuna’
medley’s. Rare Ghanaian stuff ..

Op Brobisco House of Music vinden we deze plaat met Asiakwa
Brass Band. We hadden in januari 2012 al een van hun elpees.
Deze werd toen met veel enthousiasme ontvangen. Brass band
highlife is het type muziek dat je onmiddelijk blij maakt. Op dit album
speelt de groep een eerbetuiging aan Alex Konadu met de
´Agyata Wuo’ en ‘Nsuo Amona’ medley’s.

Awieama Little John wrote the songs. He was also the lead
singer on this album. Background vocals were taken care of
by Jewel Ackah and Safohene Djeni. What a splendid highlife
record this is, from 1980 on Ambassador Records, Kumasi ..

This week I was blown away, listening to this wonderful record again
with Moses Adeolu Akinsanya. I first heard it when I downloaded it
at Afro Soul Descarga in 2012. I took the liberty to freshen up the
files by tagging all the songs and add the correct titles and such.
Posting it now is a tribute to Afrosouldescarga. Go there to

For all the diehard listening through noisy records I reward
you today with a solid highlife album. This one plays just fine.
Rim Akandoh worked with a bunch of groups before starting
his own. First it was Ahamano’s Band of which he was the
drummer and singer. He next joined Kakaiku’s No.2 Band as
a vocalist. After a short while he formed K.K’s No.2 Band
with A.K. Yeboah and Kwasi Manu. Finally with the help of
A.K. Badu, director and chairman of Ambassador Records
It came true, forming his Prince Sparrows Band. Listen ..

Voor iedereen die zich dapper heeft geweerd, luisterend
naar krakende oude platen, vandaag een beloning. Rim
Akandoh werkte met verschillende bands voordat hij zijn
eigen groep kon vormen. Eerst was het Ahamano’s Band
waarin hij de drummer en zanger was. Vervolgens sloot
hij zich aan bij kakaiku’s No.2 Band als vocalist. Na een
korte periode daar vormde Rim K.K’s No.2 Band met A.K.
Yeboah en Kwasi Manu. Uiteindelijk kreeg hij de kans,
met de hulp van A.K. Badu, director en chairman van
Ambassador Records, de Prince Sparrows Band te

In our dusty and noisy record section, today this album with
K. Adusei & the Youngsters Band. It has no year of release and
no title. Again a record that sounds quite bad, worn out cover
but highlife we like to hear. Until a better copy pops
up sometime, we’ll have to settle with this one ..

The album has plenty of background noise but is still
quite enjoyable. Not suitable for
audiophile listeners ..

Band of Warrake. Ook op Ijebor Records en uit 1976.
Het album heeft aardig wat achtergrond geluiden,
maar is toch tamelijk fijn te beluisteren. Niet

You know what they say, variety is the spice of life. Some
people just like one kind of sweets, I like to have a taste
of many types. Here on the GG we go from benga to son
and from mbaqanga to vallenato and samba. Today we
find some firm Nigerian highlife again. Now Edwin, don’t
start begging for Ghanaian, what you see is what you get.

Het is een bekende uitspraak, verandering van spijs
doet eten. Sommige mensen lusten slechts één soort,
ik hou ervan om telkens weer iets anders te proeven.
Hier op de GG gaan we van Brazilië naar Roemenië en
van Amsterdam naar Tanzania en Haïti. Vandaag weer
wat Nigeriaanse highlife. Dus Edwin, nu niet zeuren
om Ghanese, wat je ziet is wat je krijgt. We zagen
ze reeds vier maal, vandaag de vijfde op Tabansi
en uit ik weet niet welk jaar ..

In our Etsakor section, today some attention for the Unity
Band of Warrake. On one record its front man is named
S.A. Lawani, on another it is S.M. Lawani. I don’t mind what
his name really is and however the vinyl is a little dusty, the
highlife is very deep. This is their first album listed on Discogs,
not sure if it is their first issue. Enjoy listening to the Unity
Band of Warrake, on Ijebor from 1975 ..

Vandaag in onze Etsakor highlife afdeling eens wat aandacht
voor de Unity Band of Warrake. Op de ene plaat heet de front
man S.A. Lawani, op de andere S.M. Lawani. Het maakt me
niet uit hoe hij werkelijk heet en hoewel enigszins stoffig,
de highlife is van het zeer diepe soort. Dit is hun vroegst
gedateerde album op Discogs, niet zeker of het ook hun
eerste plaat is. Op Ijebor en uit 1975,
luister met plezier ..
