…Fruko was also involved in a group called the Latin Brothers,
who had a string of hits in the mid-seventies.Like most of the
Disco Fuentes projects there was something faintly old-fashioned
about their trombone led sound, but over the decades they have
acted as a school for some of the greatest of Colombia’s salsa
and tropical musicians, both instrumentalists and singers.
Among their number was Joe Arroyo, the biggest Colombian
figure in salsa, and inventor of the purely Colombian phenomenon
called musica tropical, a salsa based music that incorporates
the native rhythms of the coast.
A masterful singer who merges cumbia, salsa, merengue,
compas, soca and other Caribbean musics seamlessly into his
Joe-son mix, Joe Arroyo’s early life followed the the well-trodden
path of many Colombian singers; he started singing professionally
at the age of eight, and by seventeen he joined Fruko y sus Tesos.
After a period with the Latin Brothers, he formed his own group
La Verdad in 1981. His effective mixture of Colombian and general
Caribbean rhythms presented in an exhilarating and colourful stage
show has brought him to the forefront of those Latin musicians
whose appeal is not limited to one country, but stretches
across the continent and beyond..( the Rough Guide )tracks;

In 1984, this was the first LP on which Eddie Palmieri
worked with only Puerto Rican musicians. A little salsa

around like crazy, better be sure before you download …tracks;

On Inca Records, this is Sonora Ponceña. With father Quique Lucca
as bandleader and son Papo Lucca, one of Puerto Rico’s best pianists
and multi instrumentalist. Produced by Larry Harlow, a swell
piece of ‘son’like salsa from 1972..enjoy..

How sweet was the sound of Fania in the early seventies ?
Larry Harlow produced this spicey slice of salsa vinyl and
I think he did very well. Sparkling Fania recording with some
great songs by Justo Betancourt, smooth voice. To break the
routine it don’t hurt to have us some salsa, I should
do it more often, move your feet and wiggle your
hips to the latin beat, ..azucar..
Especially for my old buddie ‘Baldrick’.
Makes me think of café de Kroeg ?tracks;
1 Pa bravo yo
2 Psicologia
3 Guajira sentimental
4 Una audiencia muerta
5 Caracas tiene su guaguanco
6 Oyeme cantar

Here’s an old time favourite I used to play very much. It contains
the massive ‘Quitate tu’, a great number that takes you on a trip
for more than 16 minutes. Back in the days, when I deejayed at party’s,
it always came in handy to take a break, toilet, beer at the bar, a little
dance and back behind the turntable, just perfect. Classic Fania
recording, live at the Cheetah, audiance goes crazy, and what a line-up,
Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Larry Harlow, Johnny Pacheco, Roberto
Roena, Bobby Valentin, Santos Colon, Hector Lavoe, Ismael Miranda,
Pete ‘el Conde’ Rodriguez, Adalberto Santiago, Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz,
José ‘Cheo’ Feliciano, all big names. Wish I were there, how’bout you Arnaud ?tracks;
1 Introduction theme
2 Descarga Fania
3 Anacaona
4 Quitate tuPosted by Moosat 8:54 PM - Friday May 14, 2010
According to the little survey I kept, it appears over 70% of our
visitors prefer to find African music and a good second with over 40%
is in for latin. Of the other styles I gave as an option 23% likes calypso,
26% digs reggae and only 15% can appreciate some samba.From 1980 this is a classic album on Sacodis. Lassissi presents
Monguito el Unico and his All Star Band. Monguito has a unique voice
indeed, I even like his version of ‘Mi guajira’, a song recorded way too often.
Monguito is ‘algo diferente’, something else!tracks;
1 Con todo el corazon
2 Suavesito
3 Los problemas de pantaleon
4 Mi guajira
5 Vuela la paloma
6 Palo de cañaPosted by Moosat 8:53 PMCategories

A classic Johnny Pacheco from 1975, El Maestro,
with Hector Casanova as vocalist. Fania Records was
the leader in salsa in the seventies and Johnny Pacheco their
orchestral leader. They were a source of inspiration to loads
of salsa artists thru time. The slice of vinyl is very thin but
the sound on it, fat fatter fattest..tracks;
1 Las muchachas
2 Guaguanco pa’l que sabe
3 Simani
4 El chivo
5 Hoy como ayer
6 Pretame los guantes
7 Yo quiero una mujer
8 El faisan
9 Yo no parlevu France ( je ne parle pas Français )

Manny Oquendo and Andy Gonzalez are the leaders of this great
salsa band. ‘A bailar, a gozar con el Conjunto Libre’. This is salsa
by musicians with love for their work. Great instrumentations and
vocal parts make this LP a masterwork. I love that baritone sax-
solo on track 5 by Ron Cuber. Great cover art by Walter Velez.
