- Monday March 14, 20116 comments on Sonora Ponceña,Inca Records 1972
On Inca Records, this is Sonora Ponceña. With father Quique Lucca
as bandleader and son Papo Lucca, one of Puerto Rico’s best pianists
and multi instrumentalist. Produced by Larry Harlow, a swell
piece of ‘son’like salsa from 1972..enjoy..
Papo Lucca at Wikitracks;
1 Changuiri
2 Suena tu bongo
3 Imploracion
4 Tu y yo na ma
5 Tu son mi soro
6 Yo vengo del monte
7 Espejismo
8 Nacio cansao
9 Cariño mentiroso

How sweet was the sound of Fania in the early seventies ?
Larry Harlow produced this spicey slice of salsa vinyl and
I think he did very well. Sparkling Fania recording with some
great songs by Justo Betancourt, smooth voice. To break the
routine it don’t hurt to have us some salsa, I should
do it more often, move your feet and wiggle your
hips to the latin beat, ..azucar..
Especially for my old buddie ‘Baldrick’.
Makes me think of café de Kroeg ?tracks;
1 Pa bravo yo
2 Psicologia
3 Guajira sentimental
4 Una audiencia muerta
5 Caracas tiene su guaguanco
6 Oyeme cantar
7 Lagrimas y tristezas
8 Guaguanco ‘ta moderno
9 Adios felicidad

Here’s an old time favourite I used to play very much. It contains
the massive ‘Quitate tu’, a great number that takes you on a trip
for more than 16 minutes. Back in the days, when I deejayed at party’s,
it always came in handy to take a break, toilet, beer at the bar, a little
dance and back behind the turntable, just perfect. Classic Fania
recording, live at the Cheetah, audiance goes crazy, and what a line-up,
Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Larry Harlow, Johnny Pacheco, Roberto
Roena, Bobby Valentin, Santos Colon, Hector Lavoe, Ismael Miranda,
Pete ‘el Conde’ Rodriguez, Adalberto Santiago, Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz,
José ‘Cheo’ Feliciano, all big names. Wish I were there, how’bout you Arnaud ?tracks;

According to the little survey I kept, it appears over 70% of our
visitors prefer to find African music and a good second with over 40%
is in for latin. Of the other styles I gave as an option 23% likes calypso,
26% digs reggae and only 15% can appreciate some samba.From 1980 this is a classic album on Sacodis. Lassissi presents
Monguito el Unico and his All Star Band. Monguito has a unique voice
indeed, I even like his version of ‘Mi guajira’, a song recorded way too often.
Monguito is ‘algo diferente’, something else!tracks;
1 Con todo el corazon
2 Suavesito
3 Los problemas de pantaleon
4 Mi guajira
5 Vuela la paloma
6 Palo de cañaPosted by Moosat 8:53 PMCategories

A classic Johnny Pacheco from 1975, El Maestro,
with Hector Casanova as vocalist. Fania Records was
the leader in salsa in the seventies and Johnny Pacheco their
orchestral leader. They were a source of inspiration to loads
of salsa artists thru time. The slice of vinyl is very thin but
the sound on it, fat fatter fattest..tracks;
1 Las muchachas
2 Guaguanco pa’l que sabe
3 Simani
4 El chivo
5 Hoy como ayer
6 Pretame los guantes
7 Yo quiero una mujer
8 El faisan
9 Yo no parlevu France ( je ne parle pas Français )

Manny Oquendo and Andy Gonzalez are the leaders of this great
salsa band. ‘A bailar, a gozar con el Conjunto Libre’. This is salsa
by musicians with love for their work. Great instrumentations and
vocal parts make this LP a masterwork. I love that baritone sax-
solo on track 5 by Ron Cuber. Great cover art by Walter Velez.
more_info_here.tracks;
1 Lamento Borincano
2 Risque
3 Saoco

4 No critiques
5 Donna Lee / A gozar y bailar

After this weeks Fania post it seems a good idea to honour
this remarkable salsa label a bit more. This LP brings us 11
superb Fania songs by 11 different artists, mixed for us by Richard
Pampinella. An outstanding compilation of typical salsa brava.
And how about the artwork by Jorge Vargas ? Stunning..tracks;
1 Ismael Quintana – Mi debilidad
2 Bobby Cruz – Sonido bestial
3 Celia Cruz – Quimbara
4 Ismael Rivera – Mi negrita me espera
5 Santos Colon – Ay cariño
6 Justo Betancourt – Pa bravo yo

Some time ago I got confused finding two ‘Sambistas’ with the name
Noël Rosa. Yesterday I got confused over two African artists both
using the name ‘Papa Noël’. Isn’t that strange ? Now, Noël means
Christmas and since it’s december it seems appropriate to post some
music with that theme. This is Chuito, a Jibaro from Puerto Rico.
With the Orchestra of Johnny el Bravo. ( I love that name, makes me
think of the Johnny Bravo Cartoons ) Executive Producer; Jerry Masucci
for Fania Records, I don’t know about you but this is the stuff
I listen to with Christmas.tracks;
1 Fiesta de los viejos
2 Que bueno es cantar
3 Recuerdos de ayer
4 La viuda del Mayoral
5 Hay que tener fe
6 Yo me tomo el ron
7 Non Chu con Johnny el Bravo

Next friday I’ll be doing another evening of deejaying in that same
local bar I did an African night not so long ago. This time it will be
an evening with only South-American music. From Salsa to Reggaeton and
from Merengue to Samba. Both Old and New sounds, Urban and Traditional.
I am getting in the mood already by posting this great album from 1975.
Rhythm and Percussion hero Cortijo is a titan, he brings us Guaracha,
Plena, Bomba and Bolero on this LP. I especially like the young female
voice which appears to be from his daughter ( if I’m not mistaking ) Fe
Cortijo. If you like some Salsa, don’t let it pass, it’s a true pearl.Do you live nearby and want to come dancing ?
