- Friday December 16, 201117 comments on Harlem ain’t what it usta,pts 1 & 2 – Various Artists
My dear mother was born in Brooklyn in 1920. Did you know
Brooklyn was called after a little Dutch town named Breukelen ?
Another New York neighbourhood, Harlem, was called after our
city of Haarlem. How do you like this picture of my grandmother ?
It must have been taken around 1918 when she and my grand-
father moved to New York. They stayed for twelve years and
then returned to the Netherlands. 20’s and 30’s jazz from the
area still makes me feel at home like nothing else. It has a
nostalgic feel and I catch myself listening to it more and more.tracks;

How sweet was the sound of Fania in the early seventies ?
Larry Harlow produced this spicey slice of salsa vinyl and
I think he did very well. Sparkling Fania recording with some
great songs by Justo Betancourt, smooth voice. To break the
routine it don’t hurt to have us some salsa, I should
do it more often, move your feet and wiggle your
hips to the latin beat, ..azucar..
Especially for my old buddie ‘Baldrick’.

This morning I found out we lost one of my old idols.
Don van Vliet alias Captain Beefheart died yesterday,
age 69. He used to be one of my favourite popstars from
the seventies. His music was not exactly middle of the road.
With his raw and hoarse voice he stood out for bringing us
something different, something new. Although a kind of music
you’re not used to find here, I thought it would be appropriate
to post the Captain today. I always loved his music and this
time of year is very suitable for pulling up old memories.
So, try something else for a change and check this
wonderful LP of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band.
Rest in peace Don van Vliet, we’ll play all your
records again this weekend.tracks:

Eversince the first time I laid my ears on it, I was
a fan of the music of Thomas ‘Fats’ Waller. He sounds
just like he looks on most pictures. Behind the piano, big smile,
eyes balled at the ceiling. Listening to Fats always makes me
instantly happy. Check these 16 songs, volume 8 of his ‘Complete
Recordings’. Volume 113 of RCA’s series Black & White. This
volume covers songs from 1935 and some sound better than
others. I think this compilation is quite outstanding, get it
and play it with your sunday breakfast.tracks;
