Uit Ghana zijn dit de African Brothers International onder
leiding van Nana Kwame Ampadu I. We hebben er al heel
wat van hun hand gezien, het lijkt op een verhaal dat nooit
eindigt en dat is maar goed ook. Ik durf te zeggen dat dit een
van de beste groepen is die Ghana ooit heeft voortgebracht.
Deze reis heeft hij ook nog eens niemand minder dan Chief
Kofi Sammy meegebracht, hij doet de achtergrond vokalen
in de titelsong, luister naar ‘Oman Bo Adwo’..

From Ghana these are the African Brothers International
led by nana Kwame Ampadu I. We had quite some of their
albums already, it seems a never ending story and that is a
very good thing. I dare say this is one of the best bands
Ghana ever had. On this journey they also brought
with them the great Chief Kofi Sammy from
Okukuseku, he does backing vocals on the
title song, enjoy ‘Oman Bo Adwo’..

Het mag gezegd, we hebben betere cumbia verzamelaars
gehad. Deze uit 1979 bevat wat commerciele nummers,
een paar instrumentaaltjes maar ook enkele dikke hits.
Al was het alleen al om Andrés Landero’s bijdrage, en
ook Adolfo pacheco’s nummers zijn heerlijk, check..

Okay, we may have had some better cumbia collectors.
This one from 1979 contains some commercial songs,
some instrumentals too, however, it does have a few
killertracks as well. If only for Andrés Landero’s
contribution but also Adolfo Pacheco’s songs
are very nice. Listen and hear for yourself..

We hadden al een ‘Nkolo Mboka Vol. 1’ in mei 2011, dit is echter een
andere volume 1, waarop twee dezelfde en twee andere nummers
staan dan op eerder genoemde. Deze heeft geen jaartal maar ik ga
ervan uit dat hij ook uit 1983 stamt. ‘Sans espoir’ en ‘Mopaya zoba’
zijn hetzelfde, nummers twee en drie zijn anders. Zeer de moeite
van het luisteren, klinkt allemaal heel goed..

We already had a ‘Nkolo Mboka Vol. 1’ in may 2011, the one we have
today however is another volume 1. It contains two songs from the other
and two different songs. Today’s entry has no year of release but I trust
it must be 1983 as well. ‘Sans espoir’ and ‘Mopaya zoba’ are the same,
tracks two and three are different. It all sounds very good,
worth a couple of spins, listen..

Son Montuno geproduceerd door Roberto Torres is altijd
interessant, zo ook dit album van Chico Alvarez. Lekkere
trés, bongo’s, conga’s en koebel, fijne blazers
arrangementen, precies goed, luister..

The latest Sampler was posted two months ago, today we’ve
got volume 54. This compilation contains songs from Kenya,
South Africa, the Dominican Republic, Senegal, Trinidad,
Colombia, Congo, Jamaica, Ghana, Brazil and Nigeria.
The more flavours, the more listening pleasure to

We kennen allemaal Balla et ses Balladins. In het citaat hieronder
kun je lezen waarom de groep tijdelijk onder een andere naam
opereerde. Mandingo muziek uit 1972, niet te missen..

We all know Balla et ses Balladins, read in the coming lines why the

Much of ses & les Balladins’ success lies in the instrumentation: both
leaders, Balla & Pivi are horn players rather than guitarists or singers.
They were both serious musicologists, deeply into folkloric research.
In 1970, government interference with the bands personnel forced the
transfer of several band members to be part of Miriam Makeba’s
back-up band while she was living in Guinea. A new singer was
assigned to the band. Balla had a falling-out with some government
officials over their interference. He was briefly replaced as leader by
his friend & trombone player Pivi Moriba, to be restored following
the intervention of President Ahned Sékou Touré himself.

Als je Carlito’s stem hoort dan ben je toch direkt verkocht ?
En die van Defao is al niets minder boeiend. Onweerstaanbaar
geluid, zeker met Rigo’s gitaar ernaast. Prachtige
Congolese sound, le Duo a Paris..

If you hear Carlito’s sweet voice there’s no turning back,
and Defao comes along just as strong, it is simply irresistible,
especially with Rigo’s guitar on the side. Wonderful

Dit is de tweede ‘Seven 7″ from Colombia’, een compilatie
van zeven singles uit de jaren zeventig. Sommige kraken
een beetje, anderen klinken nog als een klok. Het geheel
maakt weer een aardig document van Colombiaanse
muzikale geschiedenis, luister zelf..

Het is nu iets meer dan een jaar geleden dat we het
eerste plaatje zagen van de White Eagles uit Nigeria.
Er waren toen meerdere blije luisteraars, vandaag
gaat hun verhaal weer iets verder. Niet dat ik je er
iets over vertellen kan, als gebruikelijk hebben we
slechts de muziek, wel met dikke ritmes..

It was a little more then one year ago we had our first
entrance of the White Eagles from Nigeria. Some happy
reactions on that one. Today we continue the story, I
don’t have a lot of info as usual, only know the
rhythms are astonishing..
