One of Nigeria’s most succesful highlife bands was ‘The Oriental
Brothers’. It was founded by the brothers, Kabaka, Dan Satch and
Warrior Opara early seventies. Later the brothers all took their own
course and split up in Dr. Sir Warrior & his Oriental Brothers, Godwin
Kabaka Opara’s Oriental Brothers, Oriental Brothers International
Band, led by F. Dan Satch Opara and many other variations. Today
we have an album with Kabaka International Guitar Band led by
Godwin Kabaka Opara. You may find a bunch of related albums
linked below this article. When opening the Oriental Brothers
Face Book page I found the image of the green Oriental Brothers
record which they took from my copy here at the Global groove.
Funny, and it makes one think the brothers don’t own copies of
their own records. (see sleeve damage). One way or the other,
I still think this was one of the greatest Nigerian groups all time ..

onder dit artikel. Toen ik de Oriental Brothers Face Book pagina opende
vond ik de afbeelding van hun groene album welke ze gekopieerd hebben
van mijn exemplaar hier op de Global groove. Grappig en het doet vermoe-
den dat de broers zelf niet alle platen bezitten die ze ooit hebben uitgebracht.
(zie de barstjes in de hoes) Hoe dan ook, ik ben van mening dat de oriental
Brothers nog altijd een van de beste Nigeriaanse Bands ooit zijn ..

Je kent ongetwijfeld de het gezegde, je moet het ijzer smeden
als het heet is. In het geval van de platenverzamelaar, koop de
plaat als de gelegenheid zich voordoet en je de middelen hebt.
Zo heb ik veel platen gekocht na ze snel te beluisteren en soms
belanden ze al in de kast zonder ooit echt goed gehoord te heb-
ben. Het leuke is dat je jaren later een album ontdekt in je eigen
collectie. Dit is er zo een. Ik kan over Alfonso Piña niet zoveel vin-
den op het web. Één ding weet ik wel, dit is Tropical de Colombia
van hoge kwaliteit. Bailables con Piña swingt van begin tot eind ..

In Dutch we have this saying, you must forge the iron when it is
hot. It means as much as take the opportunity when it occurs.
I don’t know the proper English way to express this feeling. In
case of the record collector, buy the record when it appears.
This is how it happens that you buy an album after a quick listen
and sometimes it ends up on the shelf without really hearing it.
The fun thing about it is that after years you may discover an
elpee in your own collection you don’t know. This is such a
record. I can’t seem to find much about Alfonso Piña but
one thing I do know. This is Tropical de Colombia of decent
quality. Bailables con Piña rocks from beginning to end ..

De laatste jaren is het meestal vallenato en soms cumbia als
ik iets uit Colombia post. Misschien wel weer eens tijd om wat
meer te brengen met het kenmerk Tropical de Colombia zoals
porro en guaracha. Aniceto Molina is een accordeonist die in
alle stijlen thuis is. Deze plaat uit ik weet niet welk jaar mist
hier en daar wat aan dynamiek en lijdt tevens enigszins onder
achtergrond geruis. Ondanks dat een feestje ..

The past few years it is mostly vallenato and sometimes some
cumbia if I post Colombian music. Maybe time to bring an album
in the category Tropical de Colombia like porro and guaracha.
Aniceto Molina is an acordeonist who is well up in the subject.
This here record from I don’t know what year misses some
dynamics in certain parts and also suffers from a little back-
ground noise. Nevertheless it is a small party ..

Ik kreeg een schrijven van Juanito waarop ik de film over Francisco
‘Pacho’ Rada weer eens ben gaan kijken. Prachtig maar ook triest
stukje historie. Alfredo Gutierrez spreekt er over Los Caporales
del Magdalena, een van de bands waarin hij ooit speelde. Fiesta
en Corraleja is een bekend nummer van ze. Deze plaat opent ermee.
Je hoort verschillende stijlen de revue passeren waaronder Porro,
Tamborera, Paseo, Pasaje en Cumbia. Je hoort Alfredo in track
#4 en #8. Fijne oude liedjes ..

I recieved writing from Juanito, it triggered me to watch that movie
about Francisco ‘Pacho’ Rada once again. Beautiful but also sad piece
of history. Alfredo Gutierrez speaks in the movie about Los Caporales
del Magdalena, one of the bands he used to play in. Fiesta en Corraleja
is a famous song by them, this album opens with it. You hear various
styles among which Porro, Tamborera, Paseo, Pasaje and Cumbia.
You hear Alfredo singing in track #4 and #8.

Onlangs verscheen de LP en dubbel CD ‘I Man A The Stal-A Watt‘
met Cornel Campbell van uitgever ‘VP Music Group’. Hij bevat
songs uit de vroege 70’s tot de vroege 80’s. Ik ben altijd liefhebber
geweest van Cornel Campbell werk en de plaat deed me de oudjes
weer eens uit de kast trekken. Deze is uit 1982 en een Bunny Lee
and Errol Thompson productie. Hij opent direkt sterk met ‘Undying
Love’. Verder bevat hij klassiekers als ‘Please Be True’, ‘Queen Ma-
jesty’ en ‘Investigator’. Even terug in de tijd met
‘What’s Happening to Me ?’ ..

Recently we saw the release of the LP and dubble CD ‘I Man A The Stal-A Watt‘
with Cornel Campbell from ‘VP Music group’. It contains
songs from early 70’s till early 80’s. I have always been alover of Cornel
Campbell’s work and the new release made pull some oldies from the
shelf. This one is from 1982 and a Bunny lee and Errol Thompson
production. It opens with the strong ‘Undying Love’ and further contains
classics like ‘Please Be True’, ‘Queen Majesty’ and ‘Investigator’. A trip
back in time with ‘What’s Happening To Me ?’ ..

Een genre dat hier enigszins tekort wordt gedaan is zonder
twijfel salsa. Als er al iets langs komt dan moet het ook goed
zijn. Salsa uit Panama is sowieso al bijzonder, het is gewoon
veel moeilijker te vinden dan anderen. Probeer dit eens. Toty
Pino y los Excelentes met deze plaat uit 1983. Ondanks twee
bolero’s (ben ik minder van gecharmeerd) een tamelijk
fijne plaat, luister zelf ..

A musical style somehow neglected here is without any doubt
salsa. If any passes by, it’s got to be the good stuff. Salsa from
Panama is quite rare anyhow, we just don’t find it as much as
other salsa. Try this for a change. Toty Pino y los Excelentes
with this album from 1983. Despite the two boleros (I’m not
so fond of) quite a nice record, make up your own mind ..

In 1980 zat ik tot over m’n oren in de reggae. Met enkele
vrienden was ik niet weg te slaan uit diverse platenzaken
die zich specialiseerden in deze hippe muziekstijl. Een van
onze favoriete winkels was RAF Amsterdam in die tijd. De uit-
bater, Boetje’ was een kenner die de meest geweldige platen
importeerde. Voor zover het budget dat toeliet heb ik toen
vele fijne reggae albums aangeschaft. Dit is er zo een. Hij
heette eigenlijk Joe Jackson, niet te verwarren met die an-
dere. Ranking Joe heeft er velen gemaakt. Dit is de zesde
in het rijtje van Discogs. Lekker diepe groove ..

In 1980 I was completely captured by reggae music. Together
with some of my friends I used to frequent some of the record
stores that specialized in reggae. One of our favorite stores was
RAF Amsterdam in those days. The chief of the place was ‘Boetje’,
an expert that imported loads of wonderful stuff from jamaica.
As far as my budget tolerated I bought as much as possible of
the so beloved sweets. This here record must be one of the
many albums purchased in those days. His real name is Joe
Jackson, not to be confused with the other one. Ranking
Joe made a bunch of records. This is number six in

The record we’ve got us today is a forgotten treasure, Michael
Prophet a forgotten hero. With his crying tenor vocal style he
made some great tunes since 1977. I’ve been playing ‘Fight to
the Top’ for ages at parties, an ever succesful dancefloor killer.
On this album Michael is accompanied by guys like Santa, Chinna,
Ansel Collins, Scully, Tommy McCook, Bobby Ellis, Tony Tuff and
Yabby U among others. Recorded at Channel One Studio ..

De elpee die we hier vandaag hebben is een vergeten juweeltje,
Michael Prophet een vergeten held. Met zijn ‘crying tenor’ vokale
stijl maakte hij diverse heerlijke songs. Het openings nummer van
deze plaat, ‘Fight to the Top’ heb ik altijd met succes op feestjes
gedraaid, een echte dancefloor killer. Michael wordt hier vergezeld
door jongens als Santa, Chinna, Ansel Collins, Scully, Tommy McCook,

Somehow 1973 was a magical year in music, time after time
I find records from that year that touch me in a special way.
Probably just superstition on my part, one way or the other,
today we find this album with les Shleu-Shleu from 1973. Once
again I like it very much. Grille ta Cigarette means as much as
skip your cigaret or let it burn up. I guess a worthy advice from
a year in which the whole world still smoked as hell. Nowadays
a more common advice, so listen without smoking, ;-)

Op de een of andere manier was 1973 een magisch muziekjaar.
Ik moet het al eens hebben laten vallen, het zal wel iets persoon-
lijks zijn maar ik vind platen uit dat jaar vaak bijzonder goed. Hoe
dan ook, vandaag vinden we dit album met les Shleu-Shleu uit 1973.
Eens temeer vind ik het een heerlijke plaat. Grille ta Cigarette wil
zoveel zeggen als, sla je sigaretje eens over of laat hem opbranden.
Een opmerkelijk advies uit de tijd dat de hele wereld nog rookte als
een schoorsteen. Vandaag de dag hoor je het vaker,
ik zou zeggen, luister ernaar zonder te roken, ;-)
