Ik zat al in de Braziliaanse sferen de laatste tijd en toen was
de Zomergast van de VPRO gisteren de in Brazilië verblijvende
journalist Nina Jurna. Ze liet ons wat interessante dingen zien.
Als afsluiter de film ‘Central do Brasil’, heerlijk. Vanmorgen
weer in de platenkast stuitte ik op deze prachtplaat die ik 12,5
jaar geleden van blogvriend Zecalouro kreeg tijdens m’n bezoek
aan hem in Rio. Ik denk daar nog vaak aan terug. João Roberto
Kelly en Luiz Reis hadden deze relaxte samba sessie reeds in 1963.
Vier handen op de piano zoals je zelden hoort ..

I already found myself in Brazillian atmospheres lately and yester-
day we were treated by a popular Dutch tv progam, an interview
with the Dutch journalist Nina Jurna who lives in Brazil. She showed
us some very interesting things and closed the evening with the movie
‘Central do Brasil’, what a delight. This morning I went straight to the
Brazillian section on the record shelf and stumbled upon this album.
Our blogfriend Zecalouro gave it to me as a present when I visited
him in Rio 12,5 years ago. I think back to that day with pleasure.
João Roberto Kelly and Luiz Reis had this mellow samba session
way back in 1963. Four hands on the piano like you seldom hear ..

Gisteravond had ik een dj optreden bij een vriendin die 50 werd.
Ze komt uit Benin en had zo’n 120 gasten die overal vandaan kwa-
men. Gasten uit Frankrijk en zelfs uit Benin waren overgevlogen
om dit met haar te vieren. Ik was gevraagd de muziek te verzorgen
op dit bijzondere feestje. Weken had ik me voorbereid, playlist ge-
maakt, ik wilde dit goed doen. Tot mijn schande morste ik water
over mijn laptop nog voor het draaien van start ging. Wanhopig
geprobeerd de zaak te redden. computer droog geföhnd. Aan-
vankelijk leek dit te werken maar na enkele nummers viel hij uit.
Ik heb nu een kater van jewelste, zij moest zich behelpen met
Spottify, het was niet meer zo goed als de bedoeling was. Ik
m’n computer vernield met jaren werk aan playlists erop.
Je kunt zeggen, het is slechts materiele schade maar dat
voelt niet zo. Ik ben er doodziek van ..

Vandaag gaat het leven verder met Tchico-Tchicaya, mooie
muziek al kan ik er even niet echt blij van worden. Ik
hoop jij wel. Luister naar deze jubileum plaat ..

Yesterday I had an evening party at the home of a girlfriend
who turned 50. She is from Benin and had it organized in a big
way. Some 120 guests came over from France and even Benin
and other places to celebrate this special happening. I was as-
ked to take care of the music for this rare opportunity. For weeks
I had been preparing, made a playlist, I wanted to do this right.
To my shame and embarrassment I spilled water over my laptop
already before the party started. Desperately I tried to save the
event, drying my computer with a hairdryer. At first it seemed
to have worked but after playing a few numbers it crashed.
I’m suffering from a huge hangover now. (non alcoholic)She
had to do it with spotify, it wasn’t how it was meant to be
anymore. I have destoyed my computer which contained
years of work in playlists. You may say it is material damage
but that is not how it feels. I’m completely sick of it ..

Today life goes on with this album by Tchico-Tchicaya, nice
record but I’m not really able to enjoy it now. I sincerely
hope you do. Listen to this anniversary record ..

Ik maakte voor het eerst kennis met Sonia Lemos door de posts
van meester Zecalouro op het door mij zeer geliefde blog Loronix.
Helaas is Zeca er al jaren geleden mee gestopt en slijt hij zijn dagen
tegenwoordig zelf als muzikant. Ik ben hem voor eeuwig dankbaar,
hij was de man die me op het bloggerspad hielp. Ik hoop dat het je
goed gaat Zeca. Dit is Sonia’s tweede album uit 1975, een juweeltje
voor de liefhebbers van 70’s samba .. luister ..

I first got aquainted with Sonia Lemos’ samba through the posts of
master Zecalouro made on my beloved blog Loronix. Unfortunately
Zeca stopped making Loronix many years ago and spends his days
as a musician himself nowadays. I am grateful to his efforts eternally,
he was the man that put me on the bloggers path. I hope you’re doing
very well Zeca. This is Sonia’s second album from 1975 and a pearl
for the lovers of 70’s samba .. listen ..

This is excellent electrifying traditional bakongo music (percussion, chant,
el bass, el guitar, likembé). A trance inducing groovy kind of proto Konono
nr 1 sound. Probably recorded and released in the eighties. It has 4 (long)
tracks which were featured before on a 10 track cassette release, on Babi
Production. “The group was founded in Kinshasa by Makengo Makape,
and has been together for several decades. Their sound is rooted in the
musical traditions of the Bantandu people, who are a subgroup of the Ba-
kongo. (The roughly 10 million souls who consider themselves Bakongo
are spread between the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic
of the Congo, and Angola. The Bakongo are a blend of different peoples
who, over the centuries, have assimilated the Kongo culture and language:
an assimilation that started with political domination of the region by the
Kongo Kingdom in the 15th century. Some of the many Bakongo subgroups
are the Mayombe, the Bantandu, the Laari, the Vili, and the Bazombe-Kono-
no’s repertoire is based in Bazombe musical traditions. Each of these groups
speaks their own dialect of Kikongo.) The ‘Orchestre Yamba Yamba Beto Ba’s
grooves are built around the guitars of Maitre Makape and his colleague Lutum-
ba, with a Likembe holding down the bass, and embroidered by bells, rattles,

Een gelukkie, vorige week in Hoorn op de platenmarkt gevonden,
deze Nederlandse uitgave met Macario Prudencia. De hoes is een
beetje cheap maar de sound is tof. Macario behoort to de nieuw
gezochte artiesten sinds ik de salsa antiyana heb ontdekt. Lekkere
muziek hoor. Luister mee en kijk wat jij ervan vindt ..

It was luck, when crate digging on the Hoorn record market last
week I found this Dutch release with Macario Prudencia. Its cover
is a bit cheap but the sound is nice. Macario belongs to the new
sought after artists since I discovered the salsa antiyana. Real
nice music. Listen with me and see what you think of it ..

Hij verscheen vorig jaar al eens op deze highlife verzamelplaat
met zijn hit Asiko Darling, dit is de eerste keer dat hij hier met
een solo project verschijnt. Eddie Donkor speelde jaren lang bij
Nana Ampadu’s African Brothers Band als ritme gitarist. Uitein-
delijk besloot hij het op eigen benen te proberen. Dit album is
opgenomen in Nigeria, EMI studio’s, Lagos. Eddie Donkor’s
highlife is zeer ritmisch en daarom zeer dansbaar ..

He appeared here on one earlier occasion last year with his hit
Asiko Darling, it was on this highlife collector. This is the first
solo appearance. Eddie Donkor used to play his rhythm guitar in
Nana Ampadu’s African Brothers Band for years and eventually
tried to make it on his own. This album was recorded in the EMI
studio’s in Lagos, Nigeria. Eddie Donkor’s highlife stands out for
its highly danceable character ..

It is more then 10 years ago already that I made this compilation
with a selection of the works of Noël Rosa. Yesterday’s post with
Almirante got our friend Rik to hand me the link to the movie,
‘Noël, Poeta da Vila’. What a wonderful film. I was completely
blown away watching it. Incredible casting, the actor that plays Noël
Rosa, Rafael Raposo, looks so much like him, astonishing.
Next to Noël Rosa we see Ismaël Silva, Cartola, Aracy de Almeida,
Mario Reis, Francisco Alves and Almirante among others. Delightful
images of the old Rio de Janeiro, still called Guanabara in those days.
Watching the movie made me do another, more extensive compi.
Partly the same tracks but this time 26 songs, my favs of the 14 cd
box called Noël Pela Primeira Vez..

Het is alweer meer dan 10 jaar geleden dat ik deze compilatie heb
gemaakt met het werk van Noël Rosa. Gisteren’s post met Almirante
zorgde dat onze vriend Rik me de link bezorde van de film ‘Noël, Poeta
da Vila’. Wat een fantastisch werk, ik werd emotioneel geraakt
door die heerlijke beelden. Onwaarschijnlijk goede casting, de acteur
die Noël Rosa speelt, Rafael Raposo, lijkt zo ongelooflijk op hem,
geweldig gedaan. Naast Noël Rosa zien we Ismaël Silva, Cartola,
Aracy de Almeida, Mario Reis, Francisco Alves en Almirante onder
anderen. Prachtig ook hoe het oude Rio de Janeiro, toen nog
Guanabara, in beeld is gebracht. Ik kreeg hierdoor inspiratie
nog eens een uitgebreidere compi te maken, deels dezelfde
nummers, maar nu 26 stuks, mijn favorieten van de 14 cd’s
tellende box, ‘Noël Pela Primeira Vez’..
