When I was making yesterday’s post I wanted to place a
link to Fela Kuti’s album ‘Black president’ of which I am
very sure it was posted way back in the beginning of the
Global Groove. Another record that has vanished in the
time I was still using Blogger. One way or the other, I am
no lover of Afrobeat, this album however is more or less
the only one that made it for me. It was one of the first
African records that reached me early eighties. Fela’s
way of playing the saxophone, the easy groove, the
hypnotic way it is built, I am no Fela fan, but
to me one of his best works ..Toen ik gisteren een link wilde plaatsen naar Fela Kuti’s
Afrobeat sound heeft me nooit heel erg aangesproken.

When most people think about the music of Nigeria, the first thing that comes
to mind is probably afrobeat, the darkly funky African jazz stew popularized by
bandleader Fela Kuti, himself a Yoruba from the southwestern region of the country.
Or perhaps they might mention other Yoruba musicians such as King Sunny Ade
and Ebenezer Obey, the twin pillars of the southwestern juju style. Maybe their
thoughts would glide more towards the eastern extreme of the country, where Igbo
highlife stars such as Stephen Osita Osadebe, the Oriental Brothers and Oliver de Coque
have made a mark upon the arena. More imaginative thinkers might look
northwards to cite Hausa and Fulani griots like Dan Maraya Jos, Alhaji Mamman
Shata and Alhaji Musa Dankwairo. It is rare though, that the spotlight is leveled
towards the mid-western region of the region of the country, the territory encom-
passing the modern-day Nigerian states of Edo and Delta. Edo in particular boasts
of a wealth of musical traditions that is both deep and broad, yet shamefully under-
explored; and among this assortment of musical traditions, one of the richest is the
music of the Afemai, or Etsako people. And in the field of Afemai music, the
undefeated champ is Alhaji Waziri Oshomah. (read more at Superfly Records)01 – Agbo-oshiomare

An album by the two juju friends Sir Shina Peters and Segun
Adewale. They called their group, without a trace of irony, Sir
Shina Adewale and the Superstars International. Scroll back to
yesterday’s post and find two other records with them. This
one is from 1978 on the Wel-Kadeb Records label.
zonder een greintje ironie, Sir Shina Adewale and the
Superstars International.

Segun Adewale & his Superstars International
Atewo-Lara
Segun Adewale Records
Ibukun Orisun Iye 1984We saw him on several earlier occasions. We have some solo
albums, one with his firend Shina Peters with whom he worked
under General Prince Adekunle. Segun Adewale reformed his juju
to become Yoruba Pop music or in short Yopop. This is his 1984
record Atewo-Lara. Like yesterday’s post an elpee on the

At Discogs it is classified as highlife. I do not hear pure highlife
though. I think I hear more juju. We also cannot say it is pure juju,
somewhere in the middle of the two and a bit more juju than highlife.
I would classify it as Juju-Highlife. From 1979 and on Ibukun
Orisun from Lagos, Nigeria. I love it, wonderful sound ..01 – Ona orun jin

Do you know how many albums Chief Stephen Osita
Osadebe made, I don’t. It must be a whole lot, Discogs
goes to 58 but they sometimes miss a few too. One way
or the other, we love to find another every now and then.
This one is called ’76 but was made in 1975. As side one
contains three titles and two tracks, I had to gamble which
one has two titles in one, I just assumed it was the second
and longest. Enjoy listening to the Chief ..Weet jij hoeveel platen Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe heeft

The Ikenga Super Stars of Africa, led by Vincent Okoroego,
a former member of Steven Osita Osadebe’s Nigeria Sound
Makers were a leading Igbo “guitar highlife” group of the
seventies and eighties in Nigeria. The Ikengas called their
style of music “Ikwokilikwo”, a fast-paced form of highlife
popularized by Oliver de Coque and Godwin Kabaka Opara
of the Oriental Brothers, amongst others. The band went on
to record several LP’s, while establishing themselves as one
of the most beloved Nigerian groups of all time, not only in
their homeland but across Africa and in Europe as well.

check some record stores on the way. This is one of the
albums I found. We can never have too much music by
