Carlos Manuel ‘Charlie’ Palmieri was born in New York. His parents
moved there from Puerto Rico in 1926, one year earlier. Both Charlie
and his nine year younger brother Eddie played the piano and were
very succesful. Charlie played with loads of musicians such as Tito
puente, Celia Cruz, Ismael Rivera, Rafael Cortijo, Ismael Quintana,
Ray Barretto and many more. This is his 1973 album
‘El Gigante del Teclado’..

We’ve seen albums on which he’s called Ali Chuks, Ali
Chuckwuma, Ali Chuckwumah and even Ali Chuckwumar.
Now we find one under Ali Chukuma. Ali appears with his
Peace Makers International Band of Nigeria and his
highlife is nice as ever. The record sleeve is quite
worn out as you can see and the vinyl itself is also
a little scratchy. One way or the other, Ali Chuckwuma’s
music is always a pleasure to listen to.

We kennen hem als Ali Chuks, Ali Chuckwuma, Ali Chuck-
wumah en zelfs Ali Chuckwumar. Nu vinden we hem als Ali
Chukuma. Ali is hier wederom met zijn Peace Makers Inter-
national Band of Nigeria en zijn highlife is fijn als
altijd. De hoes van de plaat is tamelijk versleten en
ook het vinyl zelf is wat krasserig. Hoe dan ook, Ali
Chukwuma’s muziek is altijd de moeite waard.

Like father like son.
Shina Abiodun Bakare took his late
father’s tunes, refined them and added more modern beats.
Pa Ayinde Bakare, the father, had been playing since 1933
and died in 1972. The album we have here is from 1976
and was dedicated to his old dad. Juju from the past,
put in a new coat by Shina Abiodun Bakare’s
Meranda Band ..

Zo vader, zo zoon.
Shina Abiodun Bakare nam zijn vader’s
muziek, verfijnde deze en voegde wat modernere beats
toe. Pa Ayinde Bakare, de vader, speelde zijn juju al sinds
1933 en overleed in 1972. De plaat die we hier hebbem
komt uit 1976 en werd opgdragen aan zijn zijn oude vader.

This is a Sonodisc cd from 1994 on which we find five
songs. They say ‘en compagnie de Sam Mangwana’,
but we do not hear him on every track. Track #3 is called
Batela makili na ngai, we know it as ‘Sadou’ of course.
Dear Franco specialists, please listen to see if the other
titles are correct. I hope it to be worthwhile ..

Today’s post concerrns another album which was not
ripped by me. It is a quite obscure record with Ngoma
Jazz from Angola. On Discogs I didn’t find it, only a single
with this cover. The cover probably does not belong to
the album, but since we have no other option let’s use
it for now. Listen..

Vandaag hebben we wederom een plaat die niet door mij
is geripped. Het betreft een tamelijk obscuur album met
Ngoma Jazz uit Angola. Op Discogs vond ik ‘m niet, alleen
een singletje met dezelfde hoes. Deze hoes hoort hoogst
waarschijnlijk niet bij de elpee, maar omdat er even

Today’s contribution is not my own rip, I found it through
a friend. It has a different quality, 192 kbps. It also came
without a backsleeve picture. One way or the other, it
is still nice to have another Empire Bakuba album to
listen to, get it and spread it ..

De plaat van vandaag is niet uit de eigen stal, maar komt
bij ons via een vriend. Hij heeft een andere bitrate, 192 kbps.
Tevens ontbreekt de foto van de achterkant. Hoe dan ook,
altijd fijn om weer een andere Empire Bakuba te kunnen

Singer Leandro Roque, better known as ‘Dominica’ was from
the Dominican Republic. He was famous for his merengues,
guarachas, boleros, but also cumbias. Dominica used to
perform a lot in Colombia among other countries and took
various cumbias from Colombian composers in his repertoire.
This album was released on Mexican label Discos Oda ..

Leandro Roque, beter bekend als ‘Dominica’ kwam uit de Domi-
nicaanse Republiek. Hij had naam als vertolker van merengue,
guaracha, bolero, maar ook cumbia. Dominica trad veel op in
o.a. Colombia en nam verschillende cumbia’s van bekende
Colombiaanse componisten in zijn repertoire op. Deze plaat
is een Mexicaanse uitgave op het Discos Oda label ..
