Four tracks from East African groups on this vague record.
Two by the great Mbaraka Mwinshehe, one with Michelino
Mavatiku Visi and one with Milimani Park Orchestra. Not any
information on the sleeve, a little background hiss. To go short,
the sound quality could have been way better, plenty to wish
for but still worth a few spins I’d say ..

Op deze wat vage oost Afrikaanse plaat vinden we vier nummers.
Twee met de geweldige Mbaraka Mwinshehe, een met Michelino
Mavatiku Visi en een met Milimani Park Orchestra. Geen informatie
op de hoes, wat achtergrond ruis. Kortom, de geluidskwaliteit kan
heel wat beter, de plaat laat genoeg te wensen over, maar toch is
hij het waard enkele keren te beluisteren ..

I recorded the first track for my reggae compilation series
Reggae Monster Originals. It was on vol. 4. Tyrone ‘Don’
Evans was one of the Techniques, during their revival in
1982, find ‘I’ll Never Fall In Love’ (1983) here. This album
from ? is on the ‘Techniques’ label. Tracks three and four
open with a strange hiss, sorry for that ..

Good morning groovers, If you’ve missed the GG posting,
just got back from a small trip. After some 18 months at
home a welcome break. Of course I could not resist to
check some record stores on the way. This is one of the
albums I found. We can never have too much music by
highlife superstar Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, listen ..

Goeie morgen groevers, als je de posts hier even gemist
hebt, ik ben net terug van een klein reisje. Na zo’n 18
maanden thuis een welkome breek. Vanzelfsprekend
kon ik het niet laten onderweg wat platenzaken te be-
zoeken. Dit is een van de albums die ik tegenkwam.
Van Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe kunnen we nooit
teveel muziek hebben, luister ..

Yesterday I received a message from Pete M. in which he referred
to the film ‘Soul Power’, the Kinshasa 1974, 3 day festival, organized
by Don King and Hugh Masekela. In this wonderful documentary we
see; James Brown, Muhammad Ali, B.B. King, Bill Withers, Miriam
Makeba, Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco, Ray Barretto, Manu Dibango,
The Spinners, The Crusaders, Big Black, Franco’s O.K. Jazz, Sivuca,
Tabu Ley Rochereau and many others. A little later the famous
‘Rumble in the Jungle’ fight between Muhammad Ali and George
Foreman took place there. We see a mixture of Muhammad Ali talking,
the musicians in the airplane to Kinshasa, fragments of the festival,
Congolese groups playing in the streets and such. To accompany
the film a James Brown classic album from 1971.

Ik ontving gisteren een berichtje van Pete M. waarin hij refereerde
aan de film ‘Soul Power’, het 3 daagse festival in Kinshasa in 1974
dat werd geörganiseerd door Don King en Hugh Masekela. In deze
prachtige documentaire zien we; James Brown, Muhammad Ali,
B.B. King, Bill Withers, Miriam Makeba, Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco,
Ray Barretto, Manu Dibango, The Spinners, The Crusaders, Big Black,
Franco’s O.K. Jazz, Sivuca, Tabu Ley Rochereau en vele anderen.
Een korte tijd later vond er het beroemde ‘Rumble in the Jungle’
gevecht tussen Muhammad Ali en George Foreman plaats. We
zien een mix van de sprekende Muhammad Ali, muzikanten in
het vliegtuig naar Kinshasa, fragmenten van het festival, Congo-
lese bands in de straten van Kinshasa en dergelijke. Om de film
te vergezellen , een klassiek James Brown album uit 1971.

After yesterday’s comment by El Profe I decided to end
the Willie Colon row of posts. It is time for something
quite different. I just learned about a marvelous docu-
mentary. It is called ‘Summer of Soul’. In 1969 there were
a couple of festivals in the New York area of which this
one was almost forgotten. Everybody knows about the
‘Summer of Love’ referring to Woodstock of course.
Same time there was the ‘Harlem Cultural Festival’
known as ‘Black Woodstock’. It was spread over 6
weekends and had a range of black artists; Nina Simone,
B.B. King, Sly and the Family Stone, Chuck Jackson, Abbey
Lincoln & Max Roach, the 5th Dimension, Gladys Knight &
the Pips, Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson and Moms Mabley
among many others. I thought it would be appropriate to
post an album with Sly and the Family Stone from earlier
that same year. As from today the film ‘Summer of Soul’
is shown on Disney Channel, go there and enjoy ..

iets totaal anders. Zojuist ontdekte ik dat er een prachtige
documentaire bestaat genaamd ‘Summer of Soul’. In 1969
waren er twee belangrijke festivals in de Staat new York.
Iedereen weet van de ‘Summer of Love’ natuurlijk met
betrekking op Woodstock. tegelijker tijd was er het ‘Harlem
Cultural Festival’ ook wel bekend als ‘Black Woodstock’. Het
speelde zich af over zes weekenden met artiesten als Nina
