Compas from Haïti comes if various forms. We know the easy
going twoubadou style as performed by Coupé Cloué and Rodrigue
Milien and Toto Necessité for instance. On the other had there
is the more orchestral variety played by big groups like Super Choucoune,
Meridionale des Cayes or Shoogar Combo to name
a few. Another very famous band is this one with ‘Les Frères
Déjean’. They belong to the most listened to. The four brothers,
Fred on sax, André on trumpet, Philippe on tambour and Camille
doing percussion brought their eight companions on their third
album which we have here today. High quality compas ..

de geweldige gitarist Robert Martino deel van uit maakte.
Een absolute aanrader dus, down deel en luister ..

Recently we had ‘Jambé Barrié’ from 1973, today
‘Cé La Vie’ from 1970. If we may believe Discogs, this
is their début album. Les Difficiles is one of the groups
in which we hear the marvelous guitarist Robert Martino.
An absolute must, get it, spread it and listen ..

Phil Manzanera was most known as Roxy Music’s lead guitarist.
To me his solo albums always were favourite. Being the son of
a Colombian mother and an English father he was born in London
but lived in various South American countries during his childhood.
With artists like Robert Wyatt, Brian Eno and Andy Mackay and many
others. He worked with Steve Winwood, David Gilmour, John Cale,
Godley & Creme, Nico and John Wetton to name a few ..

Here we go again, from the magical music year 1973 we find
this sweet piece of compas from Haïti. Super Soline d’Haïti is
here with this 8 track album. Not a whole lot of information
is available online but according to Discogs this one is dated
as the first one in 1973. There is a self titled record but
appears to have been released around ’75. If anybody
knows more, let us share your knowledge please ..

From 1983 we’ve got this ultimate deejay toaster’s reggae
album with Brigadier Jerry live at the controls. The record
gives no information what so ever. Label and sleeve both
show the same few words, front- and backside. It sounds
so nice and pure as if you are there at Jack Ruby Sound
yourself. Even some mess up’s are left on the record.
Treasured it since it came out in 1983 ..

As many of you may know, we had us a bunch of records
on the marvelous On-U Sound label with amongst others
the mighty, ‘Voice of Thunder’, Prince Far I. Unfortunately
On-U Sound’s label manager summoned me to remove all
of their records. Fortunately however we still have some of
the Prince’s original records like this one on Joe Gibbs Records.
From 1977 and beautifully produced by Joe Gibbs, this is ‘Under
Heavy Manners’. I’d say get it and spread it like you’re used to ..
(we’ve got the 1980 re-issue)

Zoals velen van jullie waarschijnlijk weten hadden we ooit
behoorlijk wat platen op het geweldige On-U Sound label
met onder andere, de ‘Voice of Thunder’, Prince Far I. Helaas
sommeerde On-U Sound’s label manager me al hun platen
van de Global Groove te verwijderen. Gelukkig hebben we
van de Prins ook nog enkele originele elpees zoals deze op
Joe Gibbs Records. Uit 1977 en prachtig geproduceerd door
Joe Gibbs, is dit ‘Under Heavy Manners’. Ik zou zeggen,

It has little disturbance at the beginning of the record,
later it gets a lot better. Haruna Ishola comes in with
this 1975 album on Star Records. Stunning rhythms
on top of Haruna’s vocals, apala like it’s meant to be ..

Tim Buckley, jeff’s father, has been an idol since I first
laid my ears on his music late seventies. It all started
with Look at The Fool, his last album. Tim sadly died
after taking an overdose of heroin age 28, june 29th,
1975. He started as a folk singer but his style changed
to soul, jazz, psychadelica, avant-garde over the years.
One of the greatest voices ever in seventies pop music.

Nigerian highlife comes in all kinds of forms under various names.
Professor I.K. Belemu brings us this album from 1990 and called it
‘Ijaw Highlife’. He performed under a bunch of different names,
take a look at his page on Discogs to see them all. As far as Discogs
is complete, this must be the only record with ‘his Exponents of
Nigeria’. Owigiri is another term we see passing by on his albums.
