Maybe you have the same experience as I did several times. You are
on a record fair or market and stumble upon an album you’ve been
looking for for quite some time. Quickly you check the quality of the
record and if it’s okay and you like the price, you buy it and go home
a happy man. A little later when you play it you think, hey, this not
the elpee it’s supposed to be. You had not checked the label and just
assumed it would be the right one. Sometimes it really sucks because
the music sucks and sometimes you get more or less lucky like I did
this time. The record inside appeared to be another rare and very
nice one. It is a shame you don’t have the albums right sleeve but
the music is the most important of course. I plucked the sleeve
from Discogs this time. Hope you like it too. Have fun listening ..

Misschien heb je dit ook wel eens meegemaakt, ik al meerdere keren.
Je bent op een platen beurs of markt en loopt tegen een elpee aan die
je al langere tijd zocht. Snel check je de kwaliteit van het vinyl en als de
prijs je ook bevalt koop je de plaat en gaat als een blij man huiswaarts.
Even later als je het album draait merk je het pas. Verdorie, dit is niet
de juiste schijf die erin zit. Soms baal je d’r van omdat ie gewoon slecht
is en soms heb je mazzel zo als ik dit keer. De plaat die je aantreft is ook
zeldzaam en hartstikke leuk. Het is natuurlijk jammer dat je de goede
hoes er niet bij hebt maar de muziek is vanzelfsprekend het belangrijkst.
Ik heb de hoes in dit geval bij Discogs weggeplukt, hopelijk vind jij hem
net zo leuk als ik. Luister met plezier ..

Lord Melody was born Fitzroy Alexander in 1926, San Fernando,
Trinidad and Tobago. He had his training to calypsonian by Alwyn
Roberts, better known as Lord Kitchener. On this record from 1960
we find Belmont Jackass in which Melody berates Mighty Sparrows
wife. It is Melody’s third album for Cook and fourth overall. In Trinidad
this elpee was released under the name Melody’s Top Ten with different
sleeve and track order. We have the US version. Get it & spread it..

A short time back we already had that marvelous Panamenian
record with Kike Subia. The same day I found that one I also
stumbled upon this one, and in the same Amsterdam store.
Another great find from Panama but this time with Calypso.
Twelve nice songs by five different artists. I hope there will
be no censoring in the USA for there is a
nipple on the frontsleeve..

Kort geleden hadden we reeds die fijne Panamese plaat met
Kike Subia. Op dezelfde dag dat ik die vond, liep ik ook tegen
deze aan, in diezelfde Amsterdamse winkel, wat een mazzel.
Nog zo’n leuke Panamese elpee maar dit keer met Calypso.
Twaalf toffe songs door vijf verschillende artiesten. Ik hoop
dat hij door de censuur komt in de USA want

This is part one from a series of three albums with classic calypso
songs. It has been posted by others in the past but they are worth
being here once more. It opens with a song by the Sparrow which
I heard first on Van Dyke Parks ‘Discover America’ without knowing
what I was listening to. Meantime this is history, listen..

Hier hebben we deel 1 van een serie van drie platen vol klassieke
calypso hits. Hij is in het verleden reeds door anderen geplaatst
maar verdient het nog eens opnieuw onder de aandacht gebracht
te worden. De plaat opent met een nummer van de Sparow welk
ik voor het eerst hoorde op Van Dyke Parks’ ‘Discover America’.
Toen wist ik nog niet waar ik naar luisterde, nu gelukkig

Deze ten inch met Lord Kitchener stamt uit 1957. Helaas is de
voorkant van de hoes na 61 jaar gesneuveld en heb ik hem van
het web af moeten halen. Daarom is de resolutie niet wat u hier
gewend bent te vinden. Achterkantje was nog wel in tact. Acht
nummers waarvan we de meeste nog niet eerder hadden.
Altijd weer luisteren met een smile naar de King of Calypso..

This ten inch record with Lord Kitchener and his Calypso All Stars
is from 1957. Unfortunately its frontsleeve was damaged after 61
years so I had to take it from the web. That’s why the image’s
resolution is not what you’re used to find here. The backsleeve
is still good though. Eight songs of which we didn’t see the most
yet. Always a pleasure listening to the King of Calypso..

Later beter bekend als Mighty Sparrow begon Slinger Francisco
zijn carrière onder de naam Sparrow. Het was de gewoonte dat
zangers rustig stonden als ze zongen. Slinger echter schudde met
z’n lichaam waarop hij de bijnaam ‘Mus’ kreeg welke vervolgens
een eigen leven ging leiden. Deze plaat is uit 1962, een periode
van grote populariteit voor de jonge Sparrow. Rond 1961 was hij
nog King gekroond. Mighty Sparrow is nu 83 jaar en nog steeds
actief. Acht jaar geleden heb ik hem nog zien optreden. Ook
toen nog kon de oude man z’n onderlichaam niet stil houden..

Later better known as Mighty Sparrow, Slinger Francisco started
his career as Sparrow. Singers used to just stand still and sing but
the young Slinger kept moving his body which gave him the name
of Sparrow. This record is from 1962, just after he had lost the title
of King in 1961. It was a period of great popularity though. Mighty
Sparrow now reached the age of 83 and is still active. I saw him in
the Amsterdam Paradiso eight years ago. The old man was even
then flirting with his public, making obscene moves all the time..

Do you know that great Soundway Records collector named ‘Tumbélé’?
It is on there I first heard l’Ensemble Abricot with ‘Chonga’, a marvelous
guaguanco from Martinique. This week I stumbled upon this record
on which we find ‘Chonga’ and a bunch of other latin songs by this
wonderful band. From Martinique’s 1968, not to be missed..

Ken je die geweldige compilatie cd op Soundway Records genaamd
‘Tumbélé’? Het was op die cd dat ik voor het eerst kennis maakte met
‘Chonga’, een heerlijke guaguanco van l’Ensemble Abricot uit Martinique.
Deze week botste ik op deze elpee waar die track vanaf komt. De plaat
bevat nog een aantal prachtige latin songs van deze fijne band.

Often when we discover another calypso album we find
some well known and some lesser known songs on it. On
this one, same story. Man smart, woman smarter and Bed
Bug Calypso are two songs we heard before but the rest of
this old slice of vinyl brings us a bunch of songs less familiar.
Always a joy listening to the naughty anecdotes of the guys
from Trinidad. Get surprised by them Cool Calypsos..

Telkens als we zo’n calypso album ontdekken blijken er
bekende en minder bekende nummers op te staan. Zo
ook dit keer weer. Man smart, woman smarter en Bed
bug Calypso hebben we vaker gehoord maar verder een
rij minder ingesleten spul op deze oude kraker. Altijd weer
genieten met de ondeugende anekdotes van die jongens

If we speak of calypso, I think the sixties. If we speak of calypso
from the sixties, I think Lord Kitchener. He was the man that
made my heart beat faster time and time again, such nice
melodies, his lyrics are always full of surprises and loaded
with fun. This record is from 1964 and is still in prime
condition. I was very lucky finding it, do not let it pass..

Als we het hebben over calypso, denk ik jaren zestig. Als we het
hebben over calypso jaren zestig, denk ik Lord kitchener. Hij was
de man die mijn hart telkens weer sneller deed kloppen, zulke
lekkere tunes, zijn teksten zijn keer op keer verrassend en vol
humor. Deze komt uit 1964 en verkeert nog in prima staat. Een
gelukkie dat ik er tegen aan liep. Laat hem niet liggen..
