The weekend’s here, another cold week with lots of snow lies
behind us, who said it wasn’t going to be winter like it used to
anymore? It’s annoying on one hand but good to see on the
other. Maybe the world is not heating up as much as lots of us
thought it was. At least right here it isn’t.Tonight’s LP is another sweet album of compas, the music of Haïti.
Gardner Lalanne et les Loups Noirs are true ambassadors of this
typical style. These guys rock like no other,

Yesterday I came home from a two day recordtrip to Paris.
I use to visit one of my favourite recordshops in the Quartier
Latin. I always meet there with my man Franck who is one
of a kind when it comes to knowledge of worldmusic.
He specially helps me out selecting music from his home-
country Haiti. I don’t listen to Compas very long yet and can
use a little advise. Do you know this Soundway_Release ?
A highly recommended album, with great music from the French Antilles.
The LP I post for you tonight is by Les Loups Noirs, who also
appear on it. Franck says he helped out Soundway Records too in
selecting the tunes for this fine album. I had to promise him to
write in French for this occasion and eventhough it’s been a long
time since I did, I managed to squeeze out a few lines.
normalement jamais fais. Alors Franck, mon ami, merci beaucoup,
tu m’as aidé enorme, a partir de aujourd’hui, j’ apelle toutes

At last,…news from Haiti. It’s been a while but this one
is here to stay. I am not listening to ‘compas’ very long yet
but from the few LP’s I’ve heard, this is absolutely one of the
best. It contains some of their most played tracks; Devin ‘pa’ ou,
Ce la ou yé and L’evangile to call a few. This one’s for you Arnaud.tracks;

I have to confess to you visitors I am not particular loyal to
my own formula. I started this page to bring together music from
all over the globe, as the blogtitle suggests. Slowly however African
music is taking over. Therefore it is a good thing that visitors wake
me up sometimes, and show me some inspirational material.Compas ( Kompa ) from Haïti is a delightful style of party music, and
I have a special album for you today. After Shleu-Shleu had split up
part of them decided to stay in Haïti and part moved to New York City.
There they started Skah-Shah of which this is the first album, read_more .tracks;

It was december 2008 when I posted some ‘Compas’, music
from Haiti. One of our loyal visitors from Paris gave
me the hint, I didn’t really know about compas. And after
some searching I found a couple LP’s, like this one. This
album from 1978 is a real treat. To you Arnaud, and to all
Compas lovers around the globe. Tomorrow is another
Recordfair in Utrecht, I intend to come home with
a few treasures, stay tuned..tracks;
1 Mon compe/Ti bom

This is one of the LP’s I promised to rip some time ago.
Someone asked, “What does Shleu-Shleu mean ?”, the sleevenotes
on this LP say, “Shleu-Shleu is the name of some mysterious
African tribe.” As for me, that’s just fine. The music is so
fantastic here, you can’t stop dancing. A killer from
beginning to end. Compas with a Soulful kind of Gypsie feel.
Thanks for waking me Arnaud.tracks;

December 10th already, this year runs to it’s end. It’s getting
colder outside but inside we are nice and warm. Especially when
we listen to tropical musicstyles like ‘Compas’. “Coupé Cloué
was the nickname of professional footballplayer Jean Gesner
Henri ( 1925 – 1998 ) and became the name of his compas-direct
dance orchestra.” ( Rough Guide )tracks;
1 l’International / Colé colé

It’s been 4 days since I found the time for some posts.
Been busy doing other things, but today we’re back with
something we didn’t see yet at the GG. Some time ago, one
of our loyal visitors, who lives in Paris asked me if I had
music from Haiti. At the time I was not familiar with it, so
I decided to dive into the matter. Compas is the name of this
style and it’s a happy sound. “The overall sound is sweet and
smooth and the melodies are carried on flowing guitar lines,
regulated by a characteristic rocking beat that pivots between
the hi-hat and a bass drum on the floor.”(Rough Guide)
I found this album on that fair last week. This weekend
I had to visit Paris for other matters and searched a little
for records too. I brought home some old LP’s by groups like
Shleu-Shleu and Coupé Cloué. You can expect some of those later.
For now, listen to this fine LP by Les Super Shleu.tracks;
