Something I noticed after years of listening to music,
and aspecially songs, is, the sound of voices and wether
one likes a voice, is a very personal thing. Thousands of people
love the voice of Neil Diamond for instance, I can’t stand the man.
Take Aster Aweke, many many are fund of her voice, not me.
No, if you ask me, sweet voices are nice but I especially love
a matured , old voice with some rough edges, like this guy.
Juancho Polo Valencia is a huge idol of mine. ..and how
about you, can you dig this..?

Iets wat me in al die jaren muziek, en liefst liedjes, luisteren
is opgevallen, is dat stemgeluid, en of een stem je ligt, iets
heel persoonlijks is. De één loopt weg met de stem van bv.
Neil Diamond, persoonlijk kan ik de man niet verdragen.
Iemand als Aster Aweke, ik trek haar stem voor geen meter
terwijl hele volksstammen er voor warmlopen. Nee, geef
mij maar oude mannetjes met krakend geluid, zoetgevooist
is mooi maar doorleefd als Juancho Polo Valencia, daar loop
ik dan weer warm voor. En jij, wat vind jij ervan ..?

On Mississippi Records we find this 2011 re-issue of
Mahmoud Ahmed’s Jeguol Naw Betwa, with the Ibex
Band. Originally released in 1978, wonderful Ethiopian
stuff for which I make this exception in posting new
material. Float away on these rare old tunes,
simply irresistible..

Vandaag maak ik een uitzondering en plaats een re-issue.
Normaal gesproken slechts oude plaatjes maar deze in 1978
origineel verschenen schijf is zoo fijn dat ik het niet kon laten.
Op Mississippi Records en uit 2011, Mahmoud Ahmed en de
Ibex Band nemen je mee op een Ethiopische zweef reis,
gewoonweg onweerstaanbaar..

Theoretically it is summer but in reality it doesn’t look
much like it. Only about 21 degrees today. Big shame for
those who visit Rotterdam’s Summercarnival today. And
not only for the visitors, what to feel if you’re the freshly
chosen Queen, Geneitha.

Het mag dan op papier zomer zijn, in de realiteit lijkt het er
nog niet heel erg op. Slechts zo’n 21 graadjes vandaag. Erg
jammer voor de mensen die de parade van het zomercarnaval
in Rotterdam bezoeken. Over de deelnemers nog maar te zwijgen
zoals de nieuwe koningin, Geneitha.

If we speak of calypso, I think the sixties. If we speak of calypso
from the sixties, I think Lord Kitchener. He was the man that
made my heart beat faster time and time again, such nice
melodies, his lyrics are always full of surprises and loaded
with fun. This record is from 1964 and is still in prime
condition. I was very lucky finding it, do not let it pass..

Als we het hebben over calypso, denk ik jaren zestig. Als we het
hebben over calypso jaren zestig, denk ik Lord kitchener. Hij was
de man die mijn hart telkens weer sneller deed kloppen, zulke
lekkere tunes, zijn teksten zijn keer op keer verrassend en vol
humor. Deze komt uit 1964 en verkeert nog in prima staat. Een
gelukkie dat ik er tegen aan liep. Laat hem niet liggen..

We had some fourteen of them but everytime I find another, it makes
me a happy man. Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe’s albums always display
fantastic smooth rhythms, pure joy to listen to. This is an album from
1976, he made so many, I still have to find a bunch. For now just get
it & spread it and enjoy listening to Osadebe ’76 volume 2..

Is dat geen leuke naam ? Z’n internationale Nigeriaanse geluidmakers.
Reeds zo’n veertien van zijn plaatjes kwamen er hier langs en hij heeft
er nog veel meer gemaakt, Stephen Osita Osadebe was met recht een
Chief. Zijn ritmes zijn onovertroffen en telkens als ik er weer eentje vind
wordt ik er zielsgelukkig van. Luister naar Osadebe ’76 volume 2..

It is almost nine years ago, time sure flies don’t you think ?
The GG existed only five months when I posted the Rail Band
in october 2008. It was an album on Globe Style from 1982 and
contained two of the songs we also find on today’s record. I think
this one was used to make the Globe Style album, it had the same
pictures as well, even when the original volumes one & two were
released in 1983. Anyway, two of the songs on this one are new
to us, listen and enjoy, I think they are just awesome..
P.S. the sound is extremely good,
part from one tic in track four.

Zo’n negen jaar is het alweer geleden, de GG bestond net vijf
maanden toen ik de Rail Band plaatste. Het was een album op
Globe Style uit 1982. De plaat bevatte twee nummers die ook
op dit album staan. Ik denk dat deze aan de andere ten oorsprong
heeft gelegen, ook al kwamen de originele volumes 1 & 2 pas uit in
1983. er staan tevens de zelfde fotootjes op. In ieder geval vinden
we vandaag twee nummers die we nog niet hadden, luister zelf,
ze zijn niet te versmaden naar mijn bescheiden mening..
P.S. het geluid is buitengewoon goed, los
van één plek in het vierde nummer.

Today thousands of Dutch are going on vacation, high summer.
I myself am staying nicely at home, if you don’t have schoolgoing
kids you must be crazy to go away now. Better to take holidays in
winter, spring or fall when the weather is far worse I’d say. One
way or the other, with the cadence of Las Aiglons from Guadeloupe
it is always summer. This record is from 1975, get it & spread it..

Vandaag is er weer een grote groep Nederlanders met vakantie
gegaan. Zelf blijf ik fijn thuis, als je geen schoolgaande kinderen
hebt zou je toch wel gek zijn om midden in de zomer weg te gaan.
Beter in voor- en/of najaar als het weer stukken slechter is lijkt mij.
Weer of geen weer, met de cadence van Les Aiglons uit Guadeloupe
is het altijd zomer. Deze is uit 1975 en rammelt er weer lekker op los.

During the summer months we can rely on several record-
markets and fairs throughout the Netherlands. Last week
I ended up in Alkmaar. The records were not very special
but on a square around the corner played a wonderful band.
It was a group put together for the occasion which played
a bunch of tunes from the summer of love, 1967. I had a
real good time. To find records like this one by Abel Antonio
Villa however one needs to travel to Colombia I’m afraid.

Tijdens de zomer is er in nederland altijd wel ergens een
platen-markt of beurs. Vorige week ben ik in Alkmaar beland.
De platenmarkt zelf had weinig te bieden maar op het plein
speelde een heerlijke gelegenheidsformatie die allerlei tunes
speelde uit de summer of love, 1967, ik heb me zeer vermaakt.
Zoals gezegd weinig spectaculair vinyl, een plaat als deze van
Abel Antonio Villa tref je er niet aan, daarvoor moeten we toch
echt naar Colombia, misschien volgende week daar eens heen..

I know a man somewhere in the north of our low lands, he
once told me he has a certain weekness for another man,
or for his music, or both maybe. The second man I’m referring
to suffered from a stroke some five years ago and I can’t seem
to find any info on his current condition. Rodrigue Milien was the
leader of Combite Creole of which I am glad to bring another
album today. It appeared on Marc Records in 1975.
This stuff makes me just as happy as the first man.

Ik ken een man ergens in het Noorden van de lage landen
die een zwak heeft voor weer een andere man, of eigenlijk
voor zijn muziek, of beiden, hoe je wil. Die tweede man in
dit verhaal kreeg zo’n vijf jaar terug een beroerte en ik kan
nu eigenlijk niet vinden hoe het met hem gaat. Rodrigue

doe ik jullie nog een van zijn werkjes. De plaat verscheen
