Indeed I was taking a short break last week, visiting my brother
in Copenhagen, Denmark. Fortunately the heavy rainfall and
forthcoming damage was not in my part of the Netherlands.
It occurred in a relative small area south of our country and
in some parts of Belgium and Germany. The destruction was
enormous and I pity all who suffered losses.

Let’s see what we have on the turntable today .. Since Willie
Colon was received quite well yesterday and we’ve got a bunch
of un-posted albums by his hand, let’s make it a whole theme
week. I’m posting another five of his records in chronological
order for you. His third album was already here, this is his fourth
from 1969. We have the Venezuelan release on Inca/Palacio.

Willie and his friends liked to pose as gangsters, acting to be
Wanted, not by the police but by the dancing public. On this
sleeve he appears as a bank robber. Colombian salsa artist
Fruko copied the style and also made record sleeves like this ..

Wat hebben we vandaag op de draaitafel ? Aangezien Willie
Colon gisteren zo goed werd ontvangen en er nog een stel
van zijn platen wacht om gepost te worden maak ik er maar
direct een hele thema week van. Ik post er nog vijf in chrono-
logische volgorde. Zijn derde plaat hadden we hier al, dit is zijn
vierde uit 1969. We hebben de Venezolaanse versie op
Inca/Palacio.

Willie en zijn vrienden vonden het leuk om als gangsters te
poseren. Op de volgende zien we hem ‘Wanted’, niet door
de politie maar door zijn dans publiek. Op deze poseert hij
als bankrover. Colombiaanse salsa held Fruko kopiëerde
dit en maakte ook veel platenhoezen als die van Willie ..

Once I re-tasted the flavour of Willie’s marvelous sound, it was
a small and logical step to bring more of his splendid albums.
This is solid black gold. With hector Lavoe’s great voice and
the rest of this, still very young, band you can’t go wrong.
Willies first album is also for grabs here. This is his second
from 1968. Early New York salsa from one of the
finest in the field .. more will follow ..

Toen ik de geweldige sound van Willie Colon’s band terug hoorde
was het een kleine en logische stap, hoog tijd voor meer van zijn
platen. Dit is puur goud. Met de machtig mooie stem van Hector
Lavoe en de rest van deze, nog zeer jonge, band kun je niet mis
gaan. Willie’s eerste plaat is ook downloadbaar, hier. Dit is zijn
tweede album uit 1968. Vroege New York salsa
van een van de beste in dit veld ..

Posting ‘Buscando America’, by Ruben Blades, I just discovered
that another album with him has disappeared from the site.
I am sure I have posted this record long time ago. It has vanished
mysteriously somehow. before we became independent this
occurred more often. Please let us know if there are others you
know of so I can re-post. A fine piece of latin music with the great
Willie Colon and his trombone, originally just on Fania ..

Toen ik zojuist ‘Buscando America’ met Ruben Blades postte, ont-
dekte ik de mysterieuze verdwijning van een ander album met hem.
Ik weet heel zeker dat ik Siembra met Willie Colon en Ruben Blades
lang geleden heb gepost. Voordat de GG onafhankelijk werd gebeurde
dit vaker. Mocht je dit van andere platen weten, laat het dan s.v.p.
weten, dan kan ik deze herposten. een lekkere plaat met de grote
Willie Colon en zijn trombone, origineel slechts op Fania ..

For the straight soukous lover we’ve got this one with
Fidel Zizi today. A French record dealer once explained
to me why this is a funny name. Fidèle stands for reliable
and zizi for a certain body part. You can easily guess.
One way or the other, the line-up on this album is quite
strong. With Master Mwana, Denis la Cloche, Rigo Star,
Pambou Tchico Tchicaya and Passy Jo among others
it stands firm, just like Fidel Zizi .. ;-)

Voor de seieuze soukous liefhebber hebben we vandaag
deze plaat met Fidel Zizi. Een Franse platen dealer heeft
me eens uitgelgd waarom dit een grappige naam is. Fidèle
betekent betrouwbaar en zizi staat voor een zeker lichaams-
deel. Je kunt zelf makkelijk raden welk. Hoe dan ook, de line-
up op dit album is tamelijk sterk. Met Master Mwana, Denis
la Cloche, Rigo Star, Pambou Tchico Tchicaya en Passy Jo,
staat de plaat stevig, net als Fidel Zizi .. ;-)

Back in 2008, when I only just got started with the GG,
I found this wonderful record at a fellow blog called La
Caja de Pandora. It doesn’t exist anymore unfortunately.
I was thrilled to discover Jibaro from Puerto Rico and over
the years found quite some records myself. Check our

La Caja de Pandora has vanished from the web, I feel free

vond ik deze plaat bij een ander blog, La Caja de Pandora.
Ze bestaan helaas niet meer. Ik was ondersteboven van deze
geweldig mooie muziek uit Puerto Rico en door de jaren heb ik

Today we find this record with ‘the King of Jibaro music’.
He was also called ‘El Cantor de la Montaña’. His real name
was Florencio Morales Ramos but we know him as Ramito.
His two brothers Luis and Juan Maria were jibaro singers
as well. Here at the Global Groove he was called Mr. Machete
by some visitors, often showing this tool on the sleeves of

Vandaag vinden we deze plaat met ‘the King of Jibaro music’.
Hij werd ook wel ‘El Cantor de la Montaña’ genoemd. Zijn
echte naam was Florencio Morales Ramos maar wij kennen
hem als Ramito. Zijn twee broers Luis en Juan Maria waren
ook jibaro zangers. Hier op de Global Groove werd hij vaak
Mr. Machete genoemd door bezoekers van de site, hij staat
vaak met dit gereedschap op zijn platen hoezen. Lees meer

To me it sounds a bit like Nigerian styles like fuji, apala or waka.
It is quite hard to determine the difference between them. This
is from Benin and also Islamic based with only rhythm and vocals.
This album is not on Discogs. Awesome Tapes from Africa had it
as a casette once. The music is quite enjoyable and
apparently rare, I don’t know how the
style is called. Hope you like it ..

Voor mij klinkt het een beetje als de Nigeriaanse stijlen als fuji,
apala of waka. Het is tamelijk lastig het verschil ertussen vast
te stellen. Deze muziek komt uit Benin, is ook Islamitisch met
slechts percussie en vocalen. Dit album staat niet tussen de
lijst op Discogs en is kennelijk zeldzaam. Awesome Tapes
from Africa had hem ooit als casette. Ik weet niet hoe
deze stijl heet maar de muziek is erg
fijn. Haal binnen en luister zelf ..
