It is a challenge, finding rare African records. Every once in
a while we’ve got record fairs somewhere in the Netherlands.
Since vinyl is gaining in popularity the last years it doesn’t get
easier. Lots of fairs and lesser quality in supply is what we see.
Fortunately on a few of the better fairs I get to meet with some
guys from France who bring awesome and hard to find stuff.
Take a look at this Yoruba juju album with Kayode Fashola
& his Music Makers. It is their first appearance here at the
Global Groove. Quite different style
than what we’ve heard so far ..

Om zeldzame Afikaanse platen te vinden is een steeds grotere
uitdaging. We zien alsmaar meer platenmarkten en beurzen
de laatste jaren, vinyl is weer populair geworden. Helaas komt
dit het aanbod niet ten goede, het wordt er niet makkelijker
op om iets knaps te vinden. Gelukkig ontmoet ik op de betere
beurzen altijd een paar jongens uit Frankrijk die het betere
en moeilijk te vinden spul meebrengen. Neem deze Yoruba
juju plaat met Kayode Fashola en zijn Music Makers. Het is
hun eerste hier, tamelijk andere stijl dan we tot
nu toe gehoord hebben ..

Hello good morning, today we’ve got us some juju with
an artist we haven’t seen here yet. His real name is
Ismaila Ayodele Bello, he used to be an electronic repair
man. After fixing a guitar for King Sunny Adé the latter gave him
the name ‘Ahuja’. Ahuja appeared to be a natural talent and
made a career for himself. I found some articles on him,
check out and listen to Ahuja Bello &
his Golden Eagles Band ..

Goeiemorgen mensen, vandaag hebben we wat juju met een
artiest die we nog niet eerder zagen hier. Zijn werkelijke
naam is Ismaila Ayodele Bello, hij was ooit een electronica
reparateur . Nadat hij een gitaar voor King Sunny Adé
had gerepareerd gaf deze hem de naam ‘Ahuja’. Ahuja bleek
een natuur talent te zijn en begon een muziek carrière voor

Captain Muddy Ibe is a Nigerian highlife artists from the Onitsha
region. His style of music is quite similar to that of late Chief
Stephen Osita Osadebe. Very enjoyable sound. This album does
not have a year of release, but that can’t spoil the fun listening.
It was brought by Cordos Records, CORLP-021 ..

Favourite artist of quite a number of blog friends is
Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey. His juju is always
guaranteed to please. We already had 26 of his albums
and there is still a pile left to be posted. Today’s record
is from 1976 on Decca, another fine piece of juju ..

We’ve seen albums on which he’s called Ali Chuks, Ali
Chuckwuma, Ali Chuckwumah and even Ali Chuckwumar.
Now we find one under Ali Chukuma. Ali appears with his
Peace Makers International Band of Nigeria and his
highlife is nice as ever. The record sleeve is quite
worn out as you can see and the vinyl itself is also
a little scratchy. One way or the other, Ali Chuckwuma’s
music is always a pleasure to listen to.

We kennen hem als Ali Chuks, Ali Chuckwuma, Ali Chuck-
wumah en zelfs Ali Chuckwumar. Nu vinden we hem als Ali
Chukuma. Ali is hier wederom met zijn Peace Makers Inter-
national Band of Nigeria en zijn highlife is fijn als
altijd. De hoes van de plaat is tamelijk versleten en
ook het vinyl zelf is wat krasserig. Hoe dan ook, Ali
Chukwuma’s muziek is altijd de moeite waard.

Like father like son.
Shina Abiodun Bakare took his late
father’s tunes, refined them and added more modern beats.
Pa Ayinde Bakare, the father, had been playing since 1933
and died in 1972. The album we have here is from 1976
and was dedicated to his old dad. Juju from the past,
put in a new coat by Shina Abiodun Bakare’s
Meranda Band ..

Zo vader, zo zoon.
Shina Abiodun Bakare nam zijn vader’s
muziek, verfijnde deze en voegde wat modernere beats
toe. Pa Ayinde Bakare, de vader, speelde zijn juju al sinds
1933 en overleed in 1972. De plaat die we hier hebbem
komt uit 1976 en werd opgdragen aan zijn zijn oude vader.
