Shina Abiodun Bakare took his late
father’s tunes, refined them and added more modern beats.
Pa Ayinde Bakare, the father, had been playing since 1933
and died in 1972. The album we have here is from 1976
and was dedicated to his old dad. Juju from the past,
put in a new coat by Shina Abiodun Bakare’s
Meranda Band ..

Zo vader, zo zoon.
Shina Abiodun Bakare nam zijn vader’s
muziek, verfijnde deze en voegde wat modernere beats
toe. Pa Ayinde Bakare, de vader, speelde zijn juju al sinds
1933 en overleed in 1972. De plaat die we hier hebbem
komt uit 1976 en werd opgdragen aan zijn zijn oude vader.

This WAPS 199 must have been his second or third if we
count Decca’s WAPS numbers. Sparkling highlife from
Sir Patrick. Listen, care and share ..

Het was een drukke week, veel afspraken, werk in
de tuin van m’n vrouw, prachtig weer, teveel dingen
om nog tijd te vinden voor het posten van muziek ..

In 1975 maakte Sir Patrick Idahosa zeker vier albums.
Deze WAPS 199 moet zijn tweede of derde plaat zijn
geweest, afgaande op Decca’s WAPS telling. Fris
bruisende highlife van Sir Patrick. Laad neder,
luister en deel zoals gebruikelijk ..

As most of our Etsakor highlife records, this one with Chief
I.I. Ayeni is also not free of noise. Being from 1979 it could
have been worse though. It is the third album we have with
the chief and the oldest until now. Slow music
from Ora, Bendel State ..

Zoals de meeste Etsakor platen in de collectie is ook deze niet
vrij van wat achtergrond geluid. Uitgebracht in 1979 had het
nog wel erger kunnen zijn, we doen her ermee. Het is de derde
die we tot dusver van hem hebben en de oudste zover.

They were crazy about the Peugeot 504 in
those days, I count at least 12 ..

An Etsakor highlife record with quite a different sound
than the ones we’ve heard before is this one with Sir
Maliki Shoman & the Golden 9 of Africa. It is very laid-back
and relaxed. Sir Maliki brings an ode to the drivers community.

“The driver has a duty being a driver. Without them, you wouldn’t
travel via road. Join me in thanking the drivers. Remember that it
matters not if the driver is a driver of Volks, Taxi etc. Blessing
unto those entitled as drivers ……… And praise and gratitude
be to the elders, in the scenery of music. More grease to
their elbows and ……. pats on their back.” (Sir Maliki Shoman)

Deze Etsakor highlife plaat klinkt tamelijk anders dan degene
die we eerder hoorden. Het is er een met Sir Maliki Shoman &
the Golden 9 of Africa. Hij is zeer relaxed, Sir Maliki brengt
hier een ode aan de Chauffeurs gemeenschap ..

This morning I started recording this album with Ikenga
Super Stars of Africa, reaching track #2 it became clear,
this is a christmas record. being May 18 this may be a little
strange. On the other hand, track #3 is about football, this
is relevant the whole year through. Bla bla bla, blab blab,
whatever the album is about, with the Ikenga’s a sweet
listening experience is always the matter ..

Vanmorgen begon ik deze plaat met Ikenga Super Stars
of Africa op te nemen en toen nummer twee aanbrak
werd het ineens duidelijk, dit is een kerst plaat. Aangezien
het de 18de mei is misschien een beetje vreemd. Aan de
andere kant, het derde nummer gaat over voetbal, dit is
het hele jaar relevant. Bla bla bla, waar de teksten ook
over gaan, met de Ikenga’s is het altijd fijn luisteren ..

Etsakor highlife is gaining in popularity. My main contact
in finding this music has constant demand from countries
all over the world, especially Japan. We’re lucky to find yet
another album with Honourable Vincent Ugabi and his
Dance Band. ‘Osaboh Nº1’ is from 1981 and appears on
Ebohon Records from Benin City ..

Etsakor highlife platen worden steeds meer gezocht. De
man bij wie ik de muziek over het algemeen vind krijgt
wereldwijd vraag, voornamelijk uit Japan. We zijn hier
fortuinlijk en vinden vandaag deze met Honourable
Vincent Ugabi’s Dance Band. ‘Osaboh Nº1’ is uit 1981
en verschijnt op Ebohon Records uit Benin City ..

Today we celebrate our fourteenth anniversary with you and
an album by Franco lee Ezute and his Harmony Kings Int. Band.
My choice was inspired by Jillem’s post at HTD yesterday. A few
links point to other records. On side one of this elpee we sadly
find some nasty pops, a shame, but I still wanted to post it, such
nice music. This album from 1994 must be one of (if not) his latest
records, age 55 years. Franco Lee Ezute only became 64. Quite
a lot of information about him on Bandcamp. Enjoy listening ..

Vandaag vieren we de 14de verjaardag van de Global Groove met
jou en met deze plaat van Franco Lee Ezute and his Harmony Kings
Int. Band. De keuze is geïnspireerd door Jillem’s post op HTD gis-
teren. Enkele links wijzen je naar andere platen. Op de eerste kant
van dit album vinden we helaas een paar hinderlijke ‘pops’, ik wilde
hem toch posten, zulke fijne muziek. Deze plaat uit 1994 is een van
(zoniet) z’n laatste, op 55 jarige leeftijd. Hij werd slechts 64. Aardig
wat info over Franco Lee vinden we op Bandcamp, luister ..

treurig bericht. Jillem vertelde ons dat zijn Zippyshare pagina
er over een maand mee op zou houden, download snel wat je

This is our first meeting with Idowu Animasawun and his
Lisabi International. His juju is quite psychadelic, poppy
guitars and percussion. At first I thought ‘apola’ was
another style of music, but no, Apola is a place in Nigeria
and the music is Yoruba Juju. Still learning all the time.
I kinda like this album, its sound, its artwork, all good ..

Dit is vandaag het eerste treffen met Idowu Animasawun
and his Lisabi International. Zijn juju is tamelijk psychadelisch,
met z’n trippy gitaren en percussie. Eerst dacht ik dat apola
een muziek stijl was, maar nee, het is een plaats in Nigeria
en de muziek is Yoruba Juju. Nooit uitgeleerd. Ik val behoorlijk
voor deze plaat, z’n geluid, z’n kunstige hoes, allemaal mooi ..
