It was 1984 when I got pleasantly surprised with this
awesome soulful jazzy bluesy record with a number of
topnotch musicians. They gathered for the occasion,
composing music on texts of the poet Ishmael Reed.
The main initiative was taken by Kip Hanrahan who
also produced and directed the sessions. Allen Toussaint
flew in from New Orleans to join guys like Taj Mahal, Olu
Dara and David Murray among others. An album of sweet
jazz fusion you definitely do not want to miss.
I just rediscovered it in my collection,
better get it and spread it ..

Ik schrijf nu al een tijdje het Engelse stukje ook in het
Nederlands. Zijn er veel mensen die dit nodig hebben vraag
ik me soms af. Als je hier veel waarde aan hecht, wil je me dit
dan laten weten ? Indien dit nauwelijks het geval is, houd ik
het voortaan bij Engels alleen.

In 1984 werd ik prettig verrast door dit geweldig fijne soul-
volle jazz, blues album met een aantal top artiesten. Ze
kwamen voor de gelegenheid samen om muziek te maken bij
de woorden van poëet Ishmael Reed. Het initiatief was van Kip
Hanrahan die de composities schreef en de sessies produceerde.
Allen Toussaint vloog in uit New Orleans om zich te scharen bij
de groep waarin Taj Mahal, Olu Dara, en David Murray onder
anderen. Een fraai stuk jazz fusion dat je absoluut niet zult
willen missen. Ik herontdekte de plaat in m’n collectie van

He hails from the Cape Verdian Islands and worked from
Portugal from the 60’s and 70’s with his Conjunto de Mornas.
The first track of this album from 1976 is coladera, but further
you’ll find a lot of the mellow moody morna. This is the first
record we have with guitarist Marino Silva. I wouldn’t mind
finding more of his work. Get it and spread it ..

Portugal in de zestiger en zeventiger jaren met zijn Conjunto
de Mornas. het eerste nummer van deze plaat is coladera
maar verder vind je een hoop van de ontspannen en relaxte
morna. Het betreft hier de eerste elpee die we met Marino
Silva hebben. Ik zou er geen bezwaar tegen hebben meer

The Soul Brothers scored quite some golden records
in their first few years in South Africa. The people
loved them. Then, in january 1979 a tragic car accident
took the lives of two members. ( album liner notes, Wiki
speaks of three deaths ) Nobody thought the group would
survive, but with the two substitutes this was their first
album which proved everybody wrong. As long as they
stick to their Mbaqanga and don’t play Western music,
this is a solid Zulu Jive band ..

The Soul Brothers scoorden een rijtje gouden platen
tijdens hun eerste jaren in Zuid Afrika. Hel volk was dol
op ze. Toen gebeurde er in 1979 een tragisch auto ongeluk
waarin twee van de leden omkwamen. ( volgens de hoes van
deze plaat, Wiki spreekt van drie doden ) Iedereen dacht dat
hun jaren geteld waren, maar met twee nieuwe leden was
dit hun ‘come back’ lp die het tegendeel bewees. Zolang
Soul Brothers Mbaqanga blijven spelen en geen uitstapjes
maken naar Westerse muziek, naar mijn
mening een solide Zulu Jive band ..

Ayinla Omowura was without any education, worked as
blacksmith, driver, butcher, carpenter and park boy when
he was discovered by Adewole Alao Oniluola, who later
became his lead drummer. Ayinla worked with his superior
Haruna Ishola and Ayinde Barrister among others. Read his

On the 28th of March we lost Producer, Musician, singer
and actor Ryuichi Sakamoto, aged 71. Sakamoto was the
founder of the Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1978. The band
members were Sakamoto , Yukihiro Takahashi and Haruomi
Hosono. They were pioneers in the use of samplers, sequen-
cers and drum machines. He was also famous for his work
both acting and writing the music for the motion picture
‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’. Ryuichi Sakamoto
worked with David Bowie, David Sylvian, Youssou N’Dour
and Adrian Belew to name a few. This is his 1981 album
‘Left Handed Dream, David Sylvian – Forbidden Colours
is added as a bonus. Get it and spread it,
RIP Ryuichi ..

We had two great albums with the Ashanti Brothers so far.
I remember wanting to post this album when Jillem beat
me to it. Hey, that’s how blogging goes. Out of respect for
HTD I didn’t post it then. Over time we did share quite some
